Our family just buried our youngest brother, David. He died of a heart attack. He was only 40. Mom put this song on a DVD, along with pictures of David, and the rest of us, for the Memorial Service. I used to sing and play this song on my guitar to David, and his next elder brother, Patrick, when they were little. I SO revere Joni--and Rolling Stone magazine's top 100 guitarists of all time does, too. Thanks for all the music, Joni!.
@MicroWorldLover~ Sorry for you loss. Music along with time and God love heals the grief n pain of life. It helps me so much to hear this song because I was in a bad very place emotionally earlier today- now I'm just fine
Just after dropping off my oldest daughter at college, we went to a restaurant before we left town for home. The background music playing was Ian & Syliva's cover of 'Circle Game'.
It's hard to eat dinner with tears streaming down your face in a public restaurant.
On their recording, it is followed by 'So Much for Dreaming'.
Great piece written by Joni. It will survive for the centuries.
Great Song Joni! Love it. Did you ever notice that amusement park merry-go-rounds go counter clockwise. Your song is about the carousel of life. It makes me cry in a bittersweet way.
There’s only one thing worse than death. And that is regret. Spend every moment that you can with your kids because they won’t be children for long. One day you might wake to find that they don’t even know you let alone need you. Time passes so quickly. In the end it all seems like the blink of an eye. Be it through death, divorce or neglect, when a chance to build something as precious as a personal relationship with your children is over, it’s over. And you can never get it back again.
LISTEN! JONI STOLE THE CHORUS PIANO PIECE! IT WAS ORIGINALLY MY FATHERS AND WHEN HE PLAYED IT FOR HER AT HIS CONCERT HALL,,,SHE STOLE IT. GIVE HIM CREDIT DAVID GRINPAS!
I'm crying too! man I thought I was losing it - what a relief! Man she is so right in this song. I'm 24 and just started draggin my feet to slow the circles down. Every month feels like a week, every year like a couple of months... Just 10 years ago I would sing this song in the car with my mom... man I gotta slow these circles down somehow!
nice song it's really beautiful in english class we we're studying catcher in the rye and we made a connection from this song to Holden's view of childhood and his life in general. i have an essay on it tomorrow.
@smilelikeyoumeaniit I was reading a book by Robin Hobb called the Assasins Trilogy when i first heard this. Every time i hear it now it reminds of the main character(Fitz).
1988. The night before I went to be a counselor at the Quaker camp that I attended as a kid, this song was on thirtysomething. The next night at camp, a woman played it at the campfire. It occurred to me that it was the last song I heard as a camper on my last night.
2010. Putting away my service weapon on my days off, trying to rid my mind of a child abuse case, I go seaching for the soothing lyrics again.
This song itself was written as an answer to Neil Young's song "Sugar Mountain" which was a less optimistic (read depressing) take on this subject. Both are beautiful songs in my opinion.
This song has always had some kind of applicable specialty toward my life. I won't embrace it selfishly though; Joni is so incredible. God, what a treasure.
I'm getting laid tonigt to a genius, with a genius - Thanks Joni.. and everyone. We are grateful, and early/mid 40's. We are hoping to get married--have a child, and/or publish. GOT JUSTICE?
I asked my aunt one time why do people die? She said to make room for more people.I was 9 then.I am now 56 and when i hear this song it takes me back to my aunt. She passed away in 1997.Thank you Joni for this wonderful song peace
