Believe it or not, civil defense in the 1950's was less irrational than it seems now. The only way to deliver atom bombs back then was the bomber, and the Soviets had prop-driven "Bear" bombers, which would take many hours to get to the USA and most were quite likely to be shot down beforehand. So it was possible that few enough bombs would hit the USA to make Civil Defense realistic. The era of hundreds of < 1 hour ICBMs, which made civil defense pointless, did not begin until the mid 1960s.
@KoreanMeatball I know... the people who call this a propaganda piece must think that thermonuclear war was imaginary. Like they were reading a Stephen King novel. So, would LatherLanD just sit back and eat the fallout dust or what? :)
This video is not propaganda it was and is a good educational film on the nukes. If the terrorist get their Godless hands on one and you live in an area that’s a threat then you may be glad you watched this vid.
@jjooboo: Good point. Civil defense against a massive Soviet strike of hundreds of nukes may have been pointless, but against a single nuke by a rogue nation like Iran or North Korea, it again makes sense.
Unless we stop using radioactive weopons, humanity will be wiped out.. and the few survivors will have to face off hordes of the living dead. It is a possibility that the radiation would cause the dead to rise again. Watch the original movie "Night of the living dead" and you will know what I'm talking about.
I think the reason they dont teach this stuff in school is because there isn't much chance of nuclear attack anymore, the soviet union no longer exists and countries no better now then to threaten each other with nuclear wepons. I do agree though, they should have something at schools, as long as its more accurate then those stupid 'duck and cover' things. Honestly, saying you will be safe from a nuke under a picnic blanket may be good for moral, but it wont help when the bombs come.
The only real reason is this stuff was far too optimistic, it's almost impossible to survive, and even the few survivors left would die weeks after the war all across the north part of the planet.
Sadly the only real survivors would be insects which obviously can't take profit of these videos which were made not to talk about the real affects of a nuclear war but to support and provide hope to people scared of a nuclear war.

This was a good and quality video for the time. It still has use today when you consider Japan, though it should be updated.

@Thelonesniper101 Yes, an awesome cult horror film does indeed seem an appropriate source for scientific fact regarding nuclear health effects.

They were weapons. The irony of nuclear weapon tests? the largest one ever, "Tsar Bomba", was also the cleanest.
