It's like interviewing Budhist what they know and think about Jesus... Try interviewing someone who have seen the dangers of drugs first hand and see a totally different set of answers... Death penalty for drug trafficking is justified by the govt mainly on deterrence. Does this mean that if we can stop people from littering by forcing them to, say, slap themselves publicly a million times, we should?

@Csimiami171 The existence of the mandatory death penalty has not abolished the acts of evil in the world. It does not solve the root problem of drug abuse which is addiction. Addiction should be treated by rehabiliation and education instead of taking away someone's life. This is goes the same for addiction to gambling. Gambling has also ruined the lives of many but there's no death penalty imposed on it? Also, the "crazy" people you mentioned, are they really? The judges and jury are people.

@deadBEE people are not flawless so what makes you think the juridical system is? Are you sure every accused that has been sentenced to death by the judge is completely guilty? Death penalty itself goes against the principle that we have been taught from young, that "everyone deserves a second chance".

@deadBEE I misunderstood what the mandatory death penalty was. I think it's wrong how they just hang people for selling drugs out of their country(Singapore).

I think it should be only applied to people who murder, only. If there was no ultimate punishment to crimes, people would run free - killing everybody - with only a life sentence in prison. There's only a couple of countries who use this method, I think they should all use it.

@Csimiami171 yes the crucial word is "mandatory" in this case. The accused is guilty until proven innocent, which is absurd to me. As for people who have murdered, I agree they have committed a heinous crime but I do not think we should deal the death of a person with the death of another. Like what Gandhi says,"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." He will receive God's judgement when his time has come. To me, life imprisonment is just like taking someone's life away.

@deadBEE "Mandatory" refers to the sentencing phase -- AFTER he has been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted of a capital offence, not a presumption of guilt. I support the High Court Judges decision to sentence him to death. Now, he is caught and some people say give him second chance, what if he managed to escaped? how many people will suffer? Let us not be too emotional, be rational. If a person choose to go against the law, then he or she got to prepare to face the music. I wonder all these people would say the same things if they witnessed their loved one or themselve's life being destroyed by drugs or even death because of drugs overtake.

Mandatory death sentence no doubt was inhumane, but it was a measure that should be taken to curb the drugs trafficking activities that destroyed & kills...one would rather the drug traffickers be given no mercy & punished to death (mandatorily) in order to save the life of thousands...

I think death sentences should only be for very serious crimes like murder. Offenses like drugs trafficking isn't really that serious enough to deserve death penalty but hush punishment like canning is still required to ensure potential drugs trafficker will not take their chance to ''try their luck'' and earn some quick money.

i read some of the comments, the issue is not whether there should be a death sentence or not, its whether the death sentence should be mandatory.

this means, judges can still issue a death sentence, it is just not mandatory for them to do so.

agree a bit. but after completing their punishment(ex:prison), then we can give them 2nd chance, if after commit crime then they want to lower the punishment, a big no no.
