lol her voice is really not great, it actually is shit musically but its works with them, just like mark knopfler isnt a great singer but i would have no one else with dire straights, like i wouldnt have anyone else sing this song, its what makes it what it is :)
@watermytotem I have this theory that no one really sounds that great on SNL. Remember when Lana Del Rey performed earlier this year and was also terrible. There's something about that place that makes singers sound terrible.
I really like Arcade Fire and I admire their songwriting and heart. But, while her charm is undeniable, Régine should not sing. At least not this song. Her voice is completely unsuited for it. "In the backseat" is the only song where her voice is bearable, and that might just be thanks to heavy editing.
@Gandaleon Conversely, I feel Régine's voice perfectly suits this song -- I'd go as far as to say this track is Arcade Fire's true masterpiece. Frankly, I'd like to see more of her lead vocals. To each his/her own though...
Isn't it strange that for a band of 11 people, that it comes out sounding fairly minimalist? I'm not meaning to criticize, but I mean, really, it does seem disproportionate..
I think AF are great (I came across them after hearing Intervention, which is a wonderful song) but they're not Gods, nor are they uniquely talented songwriters. All music's derivative, but the odd song here and there (and not just from AF) sometimes sounds a bit too close for comfort like someone else's. That's what I'm saying.
You know, just because one likes a band's music, or their persona, doesn't mean one can't be critical of them. Unless one is a very sad person.

Well, it appears I've ruffled a few feathers? What sort of people are you, you namedropping sycophants, defending a pop band who a) are unashamedly 80's fans, and b) don't even know you exist?
Dootie, I'm no genius, and you're certainly not - if you can't recognise the sounds I mentioned. As for 'bitching' - I don't see a Youtube rule that says comments have to be sycophantic. It's called freedom of speech. Perhaps they don't have this where you come from, Mr born in 79?
Well, they say imitation's the best form of flattery - but where does it cross the line? Listen to this song at about 3:00 - and tell me it's not stolen from Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls just wanna have fun'?
I like AF, but they've simply thieved the 80's sound - U2 etc - and no-one seems to see it.
@Malfango : haha oh, my dearest malfango. You are entitled to your opinion, and i respect it, but what you fail to see is in the 80's, everyone sounded the same. Did Cyndi Lauper complain about their sound in this song? Did she sue them? No, my friend, she didn't.
You're also welcome to your opinion, and I respect that. I disagree, however, that everyone sounded alike in the 80s. Yes, there was that 'electronic' feel everywhere - but Cyndi Lauper (and I'm not a fan) stuck out like a sore thumb on account of her squeaky voice. As for her suing AF; why would she be bothered about a 5 second mimic of music she probably never wrote anyway? I expect she'd be flattered.
@SBV123 I was there. It was great! At the beginning of this song, Win starts singing the 1st few lines of an LCD Soundsystem song, and Regine walks back and looks at him like WTF dude? Too funny!
I love the regular music video because she sounds terrible on this performance . I was gonna show this video to my uncle (who btw loves this song ) but she souds like a cat just fell off the Empire State Building !!!
Regine is kinda like Gilda Radnor . . a little off, funny, kitzchy, quirky, talented, not a beauty queen by homogenized todays' standards, and she looks like someone who would flicker a booger on you for a laugh.
Just Amazing. Probably the best live performance i've seen of any song, ever!!! Everyone is feeling it. The blokes are acting like they feel it. She is absolutely radiant!!!!! This is totally the opposite of people going through the motions.
I really love Arcade fire but I became very sad when I try to know the meaning of some stanzas and I don't totally get it. Is not easy for a non english understand english poetry. Please explain me what sprawl and the song mean (I can do only the letteral traslation) . Please :(
@ViviELasciaMorire I can't explain the whole song to you, but the world "sprawl" in this context refers to built up suburban areas of houses and shops and traffic and everything that comes with modern living in a city.
@ViviELasciaMorire 'sprawl' is a word used to describe never ending suburban development: shoping malls, fast food restaurants, and quickly and cheaply built houses.
it's one of those moments you realize your happiness and sadness all come through at once with tears of joy and the goose bumps that come in waves....
