I don't think Eddie was laughing at what Otis was saying. I think he (like everyone else in the audience) was agreeing with him and rooting for Paul (or in Paul's memory). Then again, I can't speak for Eddie and only he knows why he did what he did. Also, for the person who commented on why Eddie walked offstage for a bit, I think it was to greet someone else that was on stage? Anyway, rcc663 posted a clearer version. You guys should check it out!
@TemptsFan90 Eddie was upset at how he was treated by Motown and he took his anger out on Oits. In his book Otis said that Eddie would only spoke to Melvin and their manager Shelly that night. But they made peace a few days before Eddie died. They cracked jokes over the phone and Eddie told Otis that the things they happened was water under the bridge and when Otis called him a crazy boy Eddie replied It takes one to know one
I wish that someone would post a better video of this special time when all of The Temptations were together. That was definetely a Kodac moment. I have been searching all over the Internet to see if there is a clearer video clip of them all together at the Hall Of Fame, and I can't find anything. And I won't stop looking until I find some footage of that. That was a special moment in time.
Could someone please post a better copy. This copy is a very poor quality. All these comments about Paul, Eddie and Otis how the hell if some of you can see if Eddie was laughing or crying? Some of you must have xray eyes because I cannot see a dam thing!
Sorry, to me it looks like Eddie is definitely cracking up. And like I said before, I think he's laughing because of Otis saying he "Wished Paul Williams was here to share in this honor". At this point, neither David or Eddie could stand Otis. And Eddie probably felt that Otis was a hypocrite for saying that. And if you look closely at around 052 Eddie looks like he's smiling as Otis is saying that before he starts laughing.
THANK YOU. I thank it's kinda obvious. So many people said he was crying at the loss of Paul and Otis' words. No, I definately think he was laughing because of what he thought was Otis' hypocrisy. Both Eddie and David were very bitter toward Otis, Berry Gordy and Motown in later years.
I actully think that Eddie was cracking up when Otis said he wished Paul Williams was here to share in the honor. You know that Eddie didn't like how the whole Paul situation was handled. And both Eddie and David were very bitter about Otis and Motown in general.
David Ruffin is my 'elvis'... there is no greater singing voice in the world... rest in peace Mr. Ruffin, and all of the Temptations that now sing with the angels... GOD bless, in Jesus name.
These guys were so articulate in the way they spoke and dressed and showed their professionalism in their acceptance of this award. Certain acts of today need to take a leaf out the 'Temptatations' book. Miss you guys. You leave behind your legacy for the next generation to appreciate and admire. God bless you all and may you all rest in peace.
Thanks for posting. But I must say this....thank god the age of the vhs is on the wan(if not dead already). On the flip side, I'm glad this was preserved and we were able to watch it here.
As Paul Williams' specialty number, "Don't Look Back" was retired from The Temptations' repertoire after Williams, suffering from complications of sickle-cell disease and alcoholism, was forced to leave the group in 1971. The group did perform the song at their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a tribute to Williams.
Thank you so much. The audio was good and it was fantastic to hear them, (and to be with them, through this video) at this very meaningful point in their lives. The song was beautiful, I've never heard it before. I'm going to look it up and buy it, if possible.
how hard do u think singing that song was for eddie after paul died? that was his best friends song and a damn good song i wouldnt have been able 2 hold it together
This is Beautiful!I love The Temptations and I am so Happy that they forgot about their 'differences' and accepted this well deserved award together.Walk and don't look back.
im not sure and correct me if im wrong but i think in order of apperance it was eddie otis david dennis then melvin. cant sse very well. But u can 100% tell who melvin is
Does anyone out there have a better, higher quality clip of this amazing footage? I mean this is pretty unfortunate... come on, I can't see and I can't hear......I feel like
they were always a first class act in everyway. they sang the song dont look back to keep the spirit of paul williams alsive because he sang the lead to that song years before.
This is truly wonderful(as David Ruffin said). This is so emotional and touching.
It was good seeing them here together and I wish Paul was alive and here to also share in this celebration of their music legacy. They have served us some beautiful music and they rightly deserve honour for this. For me,they will be remembered for their lovely music and not for their tragedies.
kandigirl where u hear that from, the movie!if so the movie wasnt made right otis love paul and he wanted him to stay but his sickness is the reason why paul had to leave girl do some research
Eddie was known for being short and to the point. Plus he was upset with how Motown had treated the group as a whole, and he was still bitter about it. That night, he had spoke to Melvin and their manager Shelly, but he and Otis did reconcile a week before he died. Eddie told Otis that shit that went down was water under the bridge, after he told Otis he loved him Otis called him a crazy boy and Eddie replied with 'It takes one to know one" and they both laughed.
In Otis' book. In 2002, Otis had re-released his autobiography with an updated chapter, in which he wrote about the Hall of fame induction, the last times he saw Eddie and David before they died. Otis said that when he called Eddie, they spoke for a few minutes and that's when he said that shit that went down was water under the bridge.
After they joked, he told Otis that he made his peace and was ready for the transition. It was great that they reconciled before he died.
What a great night!! The only cloud if there was one outside of Paul being absent was the fact that Eddie kept skating across the stage not wanting to be too close to the others. My gut tells me that if Otis wasn't there, Eddie would have stayed in one spot. Otis claims that Eddie didn't speak to him at all. But the good part is that these two lifelong co-performers (Otis Williams and Eddie Kendricks) did put their differences aside and forgive each other right before Eddie's tragic passing.
What can you say after seeing that? And except for Otis and Dennis, they're all gone now and they are SO missed. God truly blessed them with a great talent.
Preach it Melvyn!what a beautiful person u were!!Glory to God 4 the giftings He instills in us from the foundations of the earth! All the members who made the Temps were a blessing to my generation!!
Thanx 4 posting this video, brought tears to my eyes.
My total respect and admiration for them. Genius, that is what the are. Too sad that Paul wasnt there, and that David would end like he did short time after this.
Dipsetallday25...I myself have several videos on you tube but even all of the ones I have..NONE does not compare to this! Thank You Dipsetallday25..You have truly given us a gift!
As I am writing this there are tears of joy in my eyes. The Temptations ment so much to so many people on this earth that it could never be mesured in this or any other life time. Thank you Otis, and Dennis. Paul, David, Eddie, and Melvin rest in peace there will never be another like you.
I thought it was rather interesting that no one thanked their mother? Also the fact that Otis was the only one to thank Shelly Burger? Interesting. Good video, only if there was another clear copy laying around in the Motown archives somewhere?
I am looking at this video clip as I type this post. I have tears running down my face, as I listen to them sing "Don't look back" And all I can think about is Paul Williams. I really love the man that Paul was and in my heart still is. He should have been there. Rest In Peace My Brother
I keep watching this clip over and over. There is something about it that's very touching.David's speech was especially emotional. He seemed genuinely humbled and honored. I loved the fact that they sing "Don't Look Back", first because it honors Paul's memory, but also because it says "forget about the past". And it seems like at least for that one glorious night they were able to put their differences behind them and as the movie said, they were brothers again.
Absolutely love to have this video, and I have been searching, sometimes I become a little disgusted, then I start another search, so please give me some kind of sign. thank you forever so much.
I agree, the tempts have had some of the best male singers ever, no doubt. The guys they have now are awesome, and I agree with one of the guys that said Otis, Dennis and Richard need to get back together and work that shit OUT!! They just need to drop a few pounds, they can still do the job.
yes was nice to hear wish i could had see it better. i think it was great that otis gave paul his honors. david birthday i know that they went out to party.
I wish this was clearer I cant really make out any of the faces I would love to be able to see the facial expressions. What a beautiful moment none the less. I love that they sing Don't look look back at the end in honor of Paul Williams.
So good to see these guys together. My 16 year old son and his friends are really into the Temptations and have begun to do their dance routines. The Tempts live on.
it's only obvious to see why god called some of his children(the great david ruffin, loving eddie kendricks, paul williams, and melvin franklin) home. they were all so great and unique in their own way. and one day the lord said it's time for you to come home and be with me. so let's not weep for them because thay are in the loving hands of our father.
January 1989..Wow what a touching moment! The Irony was that was almost 25yrs almost to the day they started! Sadly this was the last performance ever we would see the "original" Tempations sing together. David died June of 91, Eddie 92, and Melvin 1995. If you truly want to see there "influences" go to "Swan Silvertones" or the Soul Stirrers and you will hear the "gospel sound" that David was talking about..Long Live the Mighty Temptations!!!
I so lucky to b from Alabama and the south(for real). Just look standing there southern voices to the fullest. Paul Eddie Melvin and Dennis from Bama. David and Otis also from southern states Miss and Texas. Martha Reeves, Lionel Riche and many more are from here also. Ruben Studdard and Joe added to that mix. Northern make fun of our rich southern drawl but dang it makes some good voices. Dontcha thank(LOL)
I don't see why they do that. Espcially when most of them have southern roots. I'm from the North, but I have southern roots from my father's side of the family. Sometimes I wish I was born in the south.
It feels a little strange to hear the guys speaking instead of singing, ultimately you can't help comparing their speaking voices to their singing voices.
Thanks for posting. May the fallen Temps all rest in peace.
2 detroit...yes, you are lucky!! I know you HAD to see the museum right? Is it everything I hope it is? I DID meet Mary Wilson though...that was great!
hi im the guy detroit4sho, yes i saw the museum, & i found out recently that my mom's cousin actually worked for Motown when they first started..check out my channel i have some of the things she has given to me.
Yeah, clearer would have been good but I got the gist of it...how wonderful...I LOVE me some Temptations!! (let's bow our heads in a moment of silence for the fallen Temps....)Otis, Dennis and Richard need to get back together and work that shit OUT!!
that was awesome! thanks for posting that. I love how they all had to gather around one mike, just like the old days! I especially like that they mentioned the other group members.
