  • I put an MGL Xtreme EFIS/EMS in my Varieze. Radio and Xpndr are Becker Units... I "gained" about 8 lbs... But the pilot lost the same weight in the meantime, so we're good ;-)

  • yeah very cool indeed- about 2400 on the website right? what additional cost for sensors etc?

  • Why do you have your transponder off?

  • Talus99-it didn't save any weight....=(

I had to add a remote compass, OAT sensor ect...

  • TehMG- yes there is a backup battery built in the Dynon. I also have an alternator and a ship battery, so the likelyhood of loosing all 3 is slim... also my Garmin 396 has a 'derived' instrument panel and a built in battery, so technically I DO have standby instruments! And I could always just look out the window!

  • No standby instruments?

Would suck to lose electrical power.

  • NVM I see this unit had a Li-Ion backup battery.

  • How much of a weight savings do you thing the switch saved (if any)?

  • what is the cost compared to traditional avionics? i want to build an EZ with IFR capabilities and thought a glass cockpit might be the cheaper route to go.

  • I had a broken altimeter and turn coordinator so the 'real cost' was only about 2k.

  • is that location canyons or a desert?

  • Desert, 29 Palms area.

  • How was transitioning your panel to integrate the EFIS?

  • I cut out the 4 circles for the old instruments, and made a big square, it took about 1hr...

  • How was getting the Dynon EFIS 100 to integrate with your current sensors? Was it fairly plug and play?

  • It was very eze! Just pos and neg battery leads, pitot & static, one output to the transponder for altitude encoding, then one wire in from the Garmin. If you get the D180 you will have to hook up all of your engine sensors i.e. cylinder head and exhaust gas temps (8 more total).

  • Great job! Are glass cockpit instruments more accurate than the old fashion gages?

  • Not sure if they are "more accurate" but more fun to look at! All the sensors are digital instead of mechanical (Airspeed, alt, vsi) and the 'gyros' are solid state- no moving parts!

  • Good job of flying and filming at the same time. It would be cool to see some buttons pressed on the EFIS / switching screens.
