The SX130 IS I just got takes AA and the reason I jumped to get it now instead of waiting for the SX150 IS is because the 150 doesn't really add anything. Judging from the body styles on the website the A1200 is the only other one that takes AA.
No question that with AA batteries you are never faced with an inability to film for power reasons! You can get them anywhere for almost nothing. You're right though, they are disappearing in the quest for lighter weight, smaller cameras. I bought an extra little flat one for mine and it was $40 with the charger. Holds a charge for a very long time, but you can't beat the price of the regular batteries! Great point!
I don't know what mine shoot in, but after they go through full quality in iMovie HD6 using the iSight setting, and then through iMovie 08 to get the 16 : 9 aspect ratio they still get 480P on YouTube. That's not too shabby...
I guess I'll have to save up for that one fine day in the year 2017 when I will replace my computer and camera with PlasmaBluRaySurroundSoundHD equipment LOL
Canon has great cams in my opinion..that's why I miss my little one lost at sea. :-( You can still find the cams with those double A batteries. Thanks alot Andy! hugs, Chris
You're more than welcome, Chris. I was very lucky back in 2006 when I started on YouTube and the first camera that I bought was a Canon. The quality is consistent, but I'm still a bit disappointed with the 490 because it doesn't have IS and the autofocus is a bit wonky. I tried a Kodak and even a Nikon, and they just aren't the same! The kodak was killed in an underwater video experiment in Mexico, and I gave the Nikon to my mother. It took nice pictures, but the audio sucked when shooting vids.
They all shoot in high quality .AVI and that's compatible with Windows and Mac. QuickTime would be OK for me since I use Macs, but I understand your frustration, having been sent .WMV files for collaborations in the past...
I think those battery ones have gone the way of the dinosaur. Can't remember seeing any when I was out camera shopping. I will say that my Canon has a pretty good battery life although I wish I could plug it into my laptop to charge it like I do my phone.
That's a total shame because if I ever find myself with dead batteries and I don't have time to charge them I can step into any convenient store and get myself some copper tops or energizers which will last for a couple of hours of steady video recording...
My wife still uses my old A570 that I bought in 2007, and my first digital cam was an A710 which was just like the 570 except it had a less compact body and a lot of extra features which I never used. It was dropped many times and I sent it to another YouTuber who needed a camera but was between jobs... I think it was dropped in the ocean or got run over by a bus.
Hey man awesome!! Camera... love canon

Remembering to charge or bring along spares doesn't always happen, though :)

My first camera used them, so what's the point of having a bunch of rechargeable batteries that don't fit the new camera...

@fehquig :) I kinda plan to keep this one til it dies after a LONG life! So if it's like my phones, the batteries will die first. Ya know?

I should be good for a few years if I don't mind not having HD...

@fehquig HD is good, but it is also a lot more time consuming.. unless you have a very powerful computer.. :)

Very nice equipment! What format do the cams save video in? I prefer avi. I had a cam that saved to quick time and I couldn't stand it.
