PERMANENT WAVES (1980) marked the starting point for Rush's full-blown entry into condensed, accessible progressive rock. They abandoned the 20-minute suites and mystical lyrics for catchy progressive song structures, and more human, worldly-related topics. But, Geddy Lee (vocals/bass/synths), Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Neil Peart (drums/lyrics) didn't lose their brilliance in composition, even if most of the track lengths were fit for radio. ENJOY! ;o)
Such as shame that rush masterpieces like this get just under 60,000 views. Bands that actually create music are so rare today. Today's young generation is being poisoned with Justin Bieber and the likes who couldn't play or sing there way out of a wet paper bag.

this song is just plain addictive, love the sounds, love the arrangement, love the lyrics, masterful playing. RUSH at their finest (when they were still purveying hard rock).
RUSH ROCKS FOR EVER. There will never be a better band than RUSH. I never get tired of their music, but do others. These guys will be my Favorite till I die. I want to have RUSH music played at my funeral.
Aside from maybe Cream I am hard pressed to find a better power trio with this kind of musicianship. These guys are incredible ! I saw them when I was 16 and 2112 was a new album. I have been a rabid fan ever since.
First Time I ever seen Rush was in Portland, Oregon 1977. I fell in love with them then; no one knows the drums better than Neil Pert. I will always listen to them.
@fearsomesnow Don't listen to people who don't get it. They'll probably end up complaining about the freaking weather. Tell them thanks and grab yourself that cookie that they somehow think is an insult and enjoy the hell out of it. Rock on.

Rush might not be as publicly "popular" as other prog rock groups from the arena rock era, but their following of loyal fans probably out number some of the more memorable ones. Mainly this is because they stuck together.

God damn I love this song. All the Rush elements come together in one short, perfect, little treat. Even hardcores like me need a break once in a while, but every six months or so come back to it again, and again, and again.
Any guitarists flummoxed seeing Alex play this lately? Always thought he dragged his middle finger on the low E for all three cords during the verses.. he doesn't. Arg.
i bought this album the day it came out! ive loved this song for all the days since, ive marvelled at its many charms, but only today thirysomething years after first hearing it,with my new headphones on did i realize that geddy is playing his ass off all over it.

Regarding this little fight... Just between us, I think its time for us to realize the differences we sometimes feared to show... Is nobody actually listening to the lyrics?
@Rush2112Follower So true. They're from Canada, and a progressive rock group. They just don't get it because they think they and all other prog rockers are weird. They are putting personal bias and industry stereotypes on bands when they nominate them instead of going by a group/artist's success and influence, and that's just sad.
@Rush2112Follower An understatement, I think. Rush has complimented most forms of music over the years; blues, rock, prog, classical, orchestral accompaniment. Multi-instrumentalism, intelligent, insightful and inspirational lyrics, musicianship above and beyond the norm, always pushing the paradigms of individual musical perfection, drives this group past the radio static and into the limelight they have fought for and truly deserve. Just look at their fans. 'Nuff said.
I loved Rush in the 70's. to bad they are so over priced and overated today. Cant stand going to one of there concerts nowadays because there to over sold , . but as far as great songs go this has to be in the top 5 all time great Rush songs as far as lyrics and musical production. Hey Rush ....Go do some small venues where your great ...or is it really just about the money as I expect it is? sorry if I stepped on anyones toes here
@fairlane900 Im sorry, did you say Rush was overrated? Where do you live, because I want to live in a town where people talk about Rush. If you arent BSing, I think you should appreciate it instead of being a hipster about it. And you want to talk about overpriced? Their tickets are cheap compared some other artists. My sis wanted Lady Gaga tickets (not a fan myself), they were in the 300s for the crappy seats. Sure theyre not as cheap as they were in the 70s, but it's not as bad as it could be.
I still think this is Rush's greatest single song...the lyrics are phenomenally deep...a philosophic revelation about life...so beautiful...and so rare! Thanks for sharing it.
They always knew there were more "intelligent" kids/adults than there were "cool/mainstream" kids. BUT THAT HAD NO EFFECT. THEIR POWER COMES FROM THE ELOQUENT STRINGS OF THEIR HEARTS!!!!!!!!!
At 50 years old, I've been listening to RUSH since the inception of the band and their original onslaught into the USA, and I've got to say, I'm totally fired up and damn proud of the new kids coming up in the world that appreciate the intensity and professionalism of the best band to ever come from the "Great White North"! This "Time Machine" is going to be travelling for a VERY LONG TIME!! We'll see you all in Vancouver,WA on the 28th of June!!
meal between us? or secrets between us? I thought it meant "You enter first". or is that just a form of saying and not a literal. Maybe it's more of a family saying that I learned wrong from.
I grew up in the wrong generation. I'm 16 and I only discovered Rush about 3 years ago. Thank God my dad is a huge Rush fan, or I don't think I ever would've discovered them.
@gapingmaw20 Not necessarily. Everyone has their own opinions. I personally think that 2112 - Signals was the best group of albums, but I still like songs from Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows etc. And I kind of like their recent stuff (Counterparts and Presto mainly).
@gapingmaw20 Nah, not scum... but, I will have to disagree with you... I think they keep getting better with every album and every tour.... honestly, I have seen Rush play live more times then I can count, and I just saw them last month again... La Villa was by far the BEST I have ever heard it... They are such perfectionists that I don't think they are going to let old age stop them... they will keep becoming better. I'm looking for Clockwork Angels to have some of the best musicality yet!
@jaredawashburn Personally i think they started to drop down after Presto. But i do like Vapor Trails. I dunno the music just got a little too "new" for me.
For the younger crowd: This song is the perfect song when starting a new relationship. 30 something years later I regret hearing rather than listening.
if Geddy lee and my mother were hanging off a cliff and i had enough strength to save them both.... i would let go of my mother just to make sure i had an extra good grip on Geddy
@screamit1 That makes me feel so terrible when i think to myself, "I would soooo do that" lol. Geddy is one of the best bassists ive ever discovered ever.
Always liked this song. Now 30 years later this has become one of my favorites. Can't wait to hear and see them again live at MSG in less than 2 weeks.
Listening to Rush songs of this era floods my memory with all those wonderful Rush concerts during the carefree summers of my youth ... driving to Seattle or Vancouver Canada with friends the afternoon prior to the concert, Rush tunes blaring, indescribable excitement slowly building — all without booze or drugs.
The concerts were spectacular!
The members of Rush are role models who've proved that great rock musicians and songwriters can be intelligent, creative, sober and even humble.
@j1simple Wow man, do you have all of them? Read your entry and dry heaved, sick with jealousy. Turntable or not, you have a treasure bro. I am about the quest of getting all the albums available by this timeless band.
I remember kind of liking this song when I was a teenager. Now that I'm older and wiser, it seems like a masterpiece. Definitely one of my favorite songs.
@karlmoles65 Ahh Yes a BOC fan as i am and i can relate to their different styles comparing is most certain an apple orange thing. One thing is certain I can only think of maybe three BOC tunes played on the radio where as Rush has many more. These two bands are rockand Canadian at its finest.Yet the three to four minute tunes played on the radio really does not give them justice.Especially when someone brags about how much they know and when asked the answer Closer To The Heart.Ya OK u KNOW RUSH
@PETESEYESBLUE The radio here sucks possibly even worse. We get two BOC songs, maybe three Rush tunes. I stopped bothering years ago, now I just do the MP3 thing. But yeah, I'd like to think I know Rush fairly well, I always sing along with every song every time I see them. Best band I've ever seen live.
It would be the ultimate travesty if they do not get inducted. They are one of the few great bands left. Their ability to sustain and continue to grow their fan base with the new generation is a testament to how truly great they are. They do it for the love of the music. Each musician is so accomplished and lyrically very few bands can hold a candle to them.
@dondorward2010 You're the egotistical asshole..............Asshole ! How dare you disrespect a Rush fan ! Climb back in the hole where you came from. No one ever disrespects Rush or a Rush fan !
@mylles23 I also have to agree ! Looks like this dude's mouth spoke before his brain kicked into gear ! One thing about us Rush fans is that WE stick together. Hopefully he learns a valuable lesson and has a full recovery called "Humility" So speaking of humility , let's move on and stop the bashing , ok ?
@faebubba say it to my face--then it will mean something--since youre such a hardass, im sure you can put your address up here right?? iid love to take a little trip to beat your ass, so how bout that address?? IM WAITING..........
@dondorward2010 People like you are scared of your own shadow ! Study phsychology (If you know what that word means). Did I hurt your "Feeling" ? Boo-Hoo ! Besides , it looks like I already kicked your ass because of your childish response ! Grow some thick skin you little girly man with your Pink I-Pod ! Your words are so scary as a Mr. rogers episode. But I'll still be there to comfort you and wipe your tears. Was a relative alot closer to you than you wanted them to be ?...... HA-Ha
@faebubba --moron--first--"psychology" is spelled incorrectly--while i am studying that, you might want to review your spelling as well as retake that IQ test--we all know you can do at least a couple points better than that 78 you scored.and yes dumbass, im afraid of my own shadow etc etc--i thought i told you to quit bothering me--i have important work to do and cant be wasting my time with you, so go live your life or whatever it is you do
GOD=Euphoria and many of us had it LOTS when we were children but now as we get older it fades away-we wonder why this freedom feeling is getting less-its just AGE, so we look towards drugs and booze to open that area again-we then learn that its hard to deal with that cause it may put into question our lives cause then u have children-the main point is nothing we are now is important cause FREEDOM is GONE this EQUALS=we now are back to the start and create it the best way u can!
@Optics06 I understand you are an intellectual , and we've been bestowed with this as our way of thinking and spreading philosophy thank god for 21RUSH12!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rush is way beyond the RR hall of fame. Their music will be around longer than Cleveland.

to my fellow Rush fans... am I scum of the earth for thinking Rush reached their prime in the 80s?
gapingmaw20 9 months ago
@gapingmaw20 Not necessarily. Everyone has their own opinions. I personally think that 2112 - Signals was the best group of albums, but I still like songs from Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows etc. And I kind of like their recent stuff (Counterparts and Presto mainly).
halodemo65 9 months ago
@gapingmaw20 Nah, not scum... but, I will have to disagree with you... I think they keep getting better with every album and every tour.... honestly, I have seen Rush play live more times then I can count, and I just saw them last month again... La Villa was by far the BEST I have ever heard it... They are such perfectionists that I don't think they are going to let old age stop them... they will keep becoming better. I'm looking for Clockwork Angels to have some of the best musicality yet!
jaredawashburn 9 months ago
@jaredawashburn Personally i think they started to drop down after Presto. But i do like Vapor Trails. I dunno the music just got a little too "new" for me.
POPCORN454545 4 months ago

For the younger crowd: This song is the perfect song when starting a new relationship. 30 something years later I regret hearing rather than listening.

I turn to this song so many times for inspiration. Rush in Phoenix, AZ 6/16/11. I am there w/ the VIP action this year! Can't wait...

j1simple 11 months ago 43
@j1simple I bought a very inexpensive ION Turntable and put all 60+ albums I have onto my PC then to CD. You can get one for as low as 50 bucks.

@j1simple If you cant find a turntable than you can sell them to me ;-)

PETESEYESBLUE 1 month ago
@PETESEYESBLUE The radio here sucks possibly even worse. We get two BOC songs, maybe three Rush tunes. I stopped bothering years ago, now I just do the MP3 thing. But yeah, I'd like to think I know Rush fairly well, I always sing along with every song every time I see them. Best band I've ever seen live.

RUSH = MUSIC HALL OF FAME!

Why RUSH didn't play this song live other than the 2007 tour is beyond me. The guitar intro is amazing!
