is it me or does this remind you of coming back to life by pink floyd ? anybody which came out first? thats what i wanna know.. i think it should be the opening
Listen to all the live versions of this posted on here and check out how he plays the same piece so differently on different nights...And all of them are just amazing...
@gudbjorgmg Jeff Beck influenced Joe Satriani, who in turn taught and influenced Steve Vai. They have similar styles. Out of the 3, Beck is the better guitarist.
the thing that i like most about beck is that he has never just settled with doing the blues rock thing.....he has constantly evolved, stretched his limits and taken chances.
and his phrasing is without peer among rock guitarists. everyone is always clapton, clapton, clapton....to that , i say, meh.....to me , he cannot touch beck....
@phantom5691 The only people that think Clapton is better are those who have never heard Jeff Beck. Lol. Clapton is the most boring player I think I've ever seen. Him or Jimmy Page.
@phantom5691 The only people that think Clapton is better are those who have never heard Jeff Beck. Lol. Clapton is the most boring player I think I've ever seen. Him or Jimmy Page.
@phantom5691 Absolutely-- Jeff Beck has always been unpredictable. A groundbreaker. he's played everything from Bulgarian Folk Music to Indian Ragas..and ALL by ear! He's the most adventurous British guitarist ever/
@uneedtherapy42 i know, it's a cool piece. but honestly, compared to the depth of this J.B. song, Vai's sounds almost like a christmas commercial jingle. don't get me wrong, i admire Steve Vai nonetheless :-)
Jeff wrote this for the spirit of Roy Buchanan, in memory of him and asking him the question "Where Were You?".
Roy went missing during one night and wound up dead in a police cell..nobody to this day knew what really took place although the police report states "suicide"..
The film clip is PERFECT for this haunting tune. In my mind i always imagined this scene.
This song however, is the ONLY song which ever provoked an image in my head, when I listened to it with my eyes closed, the first time I ever heard it.
What I see is a large, green forest.
Might be the amazone. In some parts, I rise above the foliage and see the awesome landscape.
I'll never be able to experience that first time, but I remember it still. I can recall parts of what I saw when I listen to this song and it is beautiful.
I believe another famous guitarist (Clapton?) once said "When he's 'on', nobody can touch him" - This is one of the pieces that confirms that statement unreservedly.
Eric Clapton said in an interview once that , on a good night, Jeff Beck is the best electric guitar player on the planet. Having seen him live 5 times over the years, I would have to agree. There are no techniques for guitar that he can't do as good or better than everyone else, all while grinning and making it look effortless. His greatest quality is that he always puts taste ahead of flash - his licks always serve the song. Absolutely the MASTER.
@flyboyjeo believe it or not this jeff beck composition is actually a variation on a bulgarian folk song titled Sableyalo Mi Agontze ( the bleating lamb ) which is on the CD Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares from 1988
what awesome thing inspired him to come up with this song?i would love to know or experience what jeff was when he came up with this song, makes me think about my 7yr old daughter back in reno ,nv,with my soon to be ex-wife and i 'm here in dallas,tx,i miss herr so much it hurts:(
This is very, very special. Heavenly and... ethereal... maybe I'll have played at ma funeral. Will get em weepin and a wailin. What a way to go out though eh!!!

Rock on, man!
This was beautiful:)I really liked 2:32 as it slowed and the beautiful picture started coming forth with the water and the music wow that was nice ..Thanks again and take care .
xyzkerry: Thank you..you've done a marvelous job. This tune was an absolute masterpiece..a chilling, haunting epic that makes ones hair stand on end. I knew Jeff when he was a kid in London. He's such a sincere guy.
You knew him? Wow, that is very cool. Saw Jeff on the 89 "Guitar Shop" with Tony Hymas and, I think, Chad Wackerman. He was doing a double bill with Stevie Ray at the old Capital Centre in MD.
SykesvilleJim; There were alot of unanswered questions in connection with Roy's death. How he managed to hang himself in his cell was one, being that he was very tall and the prison bars on the window were low. He would've had to be kneeling to do so. Maybe he was killed at a different location? Marks to his head showed he'd been beaten brutally. His widow believes strongly to this day that Roy was murdered and the truth was covered up. Who knows?
This piece by Jeff Beck is really golden, but actually my compliments aren't addressed to him. They are addressed to Kerry for his marvellous pictures *****
Great Video Kerry. 5*'z Never heard this track before. Jeff Beck is so unique in his approach with the whammy bar. You captured the mood perfectly. Peace.
Awesome - what a wonderful blend of music and pictures - so atmospheric - I have been in that darkness and seen the light finally return - 5 stars and a favourite for this one :-)
Thanks for this post. Great pics to go with what is, probably, my favorite Jeff song.
To me, this song so perfectly captures that sense of loneliness and bittersweet longing that one feels when thinking of people and places out of reach and/or of times past.
And if you haven't had that feeling yet, one day you will. Trust me.
SykesvilleJim: Jeff Beck stated that he wrote this tune in memory to the late guitarist Roy Buchanan. It's asking the question "Where were you?" to Roys spirit since on one evening in 1987 Buch went for stroll and later ended up dead in a prison cell.(presumably hanged) Was it police brutality? The police were cleared of any wrongful action. Nobody knows for sure what took place in the hours before he was found.
Roy's death was such a tragedy. I recall that there was much controversy at the time as to whether he really killed himself, or whether something far more nefarious had occured in the jailcell. Roy definitely had his demons, but you've got to wonder whether they were so strong that he'd want to kill himself. Of course, look at Danny Gatton...
I was fortunate enough to see both Roy & Danny in the early 80s in D.C. Telemasters, indeed.
SykesvillJim: Jeff hails from the South of London where i lived from 1958-1999. I recall his early days with 'The Tridents'. Back then in the mid 60s i saw many great artists roaming London (Hendrix, Trower,Kossoff etc)...but Jeff was always one of the most sincere and humorous. He has such a great knowledge of all types of music both Eastern & Western. He sounds very Eastern on this one when he dips the vibrato arm. Each note like a finely crafted jewel!
You are very lucky to have seen those guys-- major players in guitar history and pop culture history. Am a big Trower fan. Actually, Jeff, Robin, and Pagey make up my trio of inspiration for rock guitar. What else is important about the English rock guitarists is that they played such an important role in introducing American kids like me to the great BLues & rockabilly guitarists. Through Trower & Clapton I discovered BB; through Pagey, Hubert Sumlin (whom I've met); through Beck, Gallup, etc
SykesvilleJim:Meeting Sumlin must've been unbelievable. That guy's sound really influenced Jeff Beck as in his closing statements in his book "Crazy Fingers". Clapton actually seemed to emulate Freddie King more after that "Hideaway" version. I went to see Freddie tour with Eric in 1976 but was alarmed/disturbed by Eric's racist rants before each concert.
Did not hear about EC doing that, although I'd heard about him making some anti-Pakistani statements in the late 70s. Coincided with Elvis Costello's asshole remark about Ray Charles (which caused Bonnie Bramlett to lay his ass out with a right hook. People forget about that incident.)
Re: eastern influence, I read a story that Ravi Shankar was supposed to have played sitar on "Heart Full of Soul," but couldn't nail it. So, Beck jumps in and does that distinctive, fuzzed-out melody instead. A natural musical mimic, I've heard him called.
Also, I've always wondered how far Kossoff would've have gone. He's really not known outside of us guitar geeks. A real shame he went so young.
SykesvilleJim: You are probably right about Ravi. Most of those Indian phrases were handed over to session guy called 'Lord Sitar' in the 60s but as you know, the sitar guitar was very popular back then. Koss worked in a music shop firstly. His dad, David Kossoff, used to lecture at my school.
SykesvilleJim: Just reading a fairly recent interview with JB where he amusingly rates today's music as "100 channels of trashy garbage, plastic hamburger crap..all glossy lipstick shit, tits & bare midriffs". Back in West London Jeff still listens to his main hero Django Reinhardt, Bulgarian folk and Indian music. He'd done alot of music with Indian musician Nitin Sawney. The influences come through ss noted on his tune "Nadia".
glen922: That was another tune that Jeff had dedicated to Roy Buchanan and done in his style, although it was a Stevie Wonder song (Stevie had written it after breaking up with Syreeta Wright). Roy Buchanan's rock-abilly guitar style had a profound effect on Jeff together with Cliff Gallup/Scotty Moore.
