  • That was just brilliant. It was really 30 minutes well spent. This guy knows how to direct a good action movie and he knows the technology that goes into creating his worlds inside out literally. Its great to see him talk about technical part of film making for once. I always wanted to know how he did the bio-illuminessence for Avatar. Now I know! :D

  • This is scary... His face looks like me, he talks like me and even his gestures are like mine!!?

  • This is one of the most thorough and in-depth interviews given by a film maker that I have ever seen. Wish we could have more of them from other directors.

  • @gibbi8 Or videos like "A day in the life of John Lasseter". Itñs fascinating to watch this stuff, and we, young filmmakers learn a lot

  • avatar was one horrible cgi fest. I stand by it. I love every old school movie Cameron directed.

  • @achmedlolol what do u mean by cgi?

  • I'm not the biggest fan of Avatar. Great to watch but there are some big problems with the plot and screenplay. But my god, it's mindboggling to think about just how much work and intelligence went into creating something that looks so fucking good.

  • admire.....respect.....follow

  • This man is the perfection!

  • one word would be enough.... per-fec-tion!!! and that's it...

  • This is a great interview.

  • I love how Cameron adores Jacksons movies and he is cool in my book.

  • how did he not get best director for this film, hurt locker is a shit movie and was not nearly as complex to film

  • @tully4444

Avatar fans have been wondering that for almost a year now.

  • He knows Aronofsky's film. Pie. So, if anyone thinks that Cameron doesn't see or understand film, you're making a big mistake.

  • King Kong would have been awesome in 3D.

  • @TheAltair4

That would have been! Isn't that awesome Jackson is a fan of LOTR?

  • @Johnlindsey289 Well, i simply couldn't imagine him not being a fan of LOTR, as they are truly brilliant fantasy films. I'm sure he is a fan of Peter Jackson's other films as well.

  • James Cameron is a fan of LOTR? awesome, he is a movie lover. I love how Avatar was a nice mix of Man named Horse, Frank Herbert's Dune, Star Wars, John Carter of Mars, Nausicaa and Heavy Metal magazine. Cameron wrote the film in 1993 and had to wait until 2005 for the technology.

  • Who is interviewing him?

  • hmm, very interesting, thank you for posting this!

  • Say what you want about Avatar as a piece of fiction, but James Cameron innovated technologically to no end to make that picture. He deserves credit for that, if only that, even from those who thought Avatar's narrative was childish and predictable.

  • there ill be a long time till holiwood wil have an james cameron , or an ridsley scott or an oliver stone, or an scorsese or an spilberg or an kevin costner or an michael mann or an eastwood......!!!!!!! thouse people have pased in to legend.....! i can belive the work wath they did in the 90s and the shety work that there doiung now........!!!!!!!!there are all gone!!! holiwood id gone withe wind.......

  • @epicvlas today we have michael bay, brett ratner and zack efron...pathetic.

  • @Colt2571 The real problem is the studios. Look up alien three. It had david fincher who did fight club and many other great movies but they kept cutting out the ideas and trying to make alien 2. Check out the behind the scenes.

  • @muzapstar

You're actually defending that turd, Alien 3?? And you don't like Avatar? lol. That's rich.

  • @LukeLovesRose Also atleadst Lucas didn`t cheapen his Episode II lovestory, by adding a sexscene, where Cameron did twice!!!!!

  • @reviewreviewer1

LOL. A sex scene cheapens a love story?? How??

They've had suggested sex scenes in film since the dawn of the motion picture. Even Casablanca suggests Rick and Ilsa made love despite the fact that she's married.

  • @LukeLovesRose I know it is done a lot, and it cheapens te emotional meaning of love, and traits it in for physical joy, which has northing to do with love!!!

  • @reviewreviewer1

Your opinion. But, what I saw in Titanic and Avatar is the suggestion that our leading characters were making love. It was beautiful to see them commemorate their love for each other in those moments IMO.

  • @LukeLovesRose Oke why did that need to be physivly consumated, why couldn`t they just love eachother and be together1!!!

  • @reviewreviewer1

I obviously am just gonna hit my head on a wall, because you're not looking at all sides of this argument. So, I give up. Jesus.

I don't care if the love scene are out of place or not, I wouldn't change them for anything.

  • @reviewreviewer1

Btw, I'll take "I see you" over Hayden Christiansen's whiny, "I can't breathe, Wah!" lol

  • Anyone else think he looks a bit like Paul McCartney from this angle?

  • Why would ilm and weta not go with the head rig idea. It makes so much more sense than painting dots on the face. Like cameron said, you can't put dots on the eyes, so they have to make that up.

  • I can't wait to sit home when day and watch the Avatar special spececial edition with full commentaries and behind the scenes. They need to make a documentry like what they did with the abyss, "Under pressure."

  • woooow what a stupid interviewer

  • Cameron is a genius, but this lady acts like she knows everything and then when the interview is over she treats him rudely. Why don't you guys have real technical geeks interview him who can appreciate what he is saying?

  • all of James Cameron's film are beast.. he's only made a few films but just look at the list : Terminator 1 and 2, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies, Titanic, and Avatar

  • James u really r KING OF THE WORLD at what you do

  • I wish I could talk to Jim all day on the making of Avatar. Neato!

  • Cameron is the new Lucas.

  • @SolidSnake032486 Cameron is way ahead Lucas.

  • @SolidSnake032486

    That's like low-balling.

    Cameron is a master filmmaker.

George Lucas simply got lucky in 1977.

  • @LukeLovesRose thats dumbest fucking thing ive ever read. star wars was made with a shoe string budget of $11 mil, avatar needed $300 mil plus marketing dollars to be possible. go to bed kid.

  • @EtcVidsDoS

The dumbest thing YOU'VE read? I doubt that.

  • @LukeLovesRose Did Lucas get lucky multiple times, he had all 6 SW films, American Graffitie, Indiana Jones etc. Also Cameron`s film, like Titanic or Termiator don`t come close!!!!!!!

  • @reviewreviewer1

Um, when you get lucky with one film, SW, you're next installment to that franchise is gonna be highly anticipated. It just so happens, Lucas didn't direct the next three SW films so much as produce them. He did some work, yes. But, you can feel the competence of the directors for Return and Empire. Lucas demonstrated nothing but incompetence in the prequels.

That of course didn't stop a bunch of brainwashed SW geeks from checking those horrid films out. Boy, we were naive.

  • @LukeLovesRose Yes but the quality of the sequel, isn`t decided by it`s anticpation, Lucas excercised a loy of control over both zequels, and he did direct the original, plus the prequels are awesome, also was indiana jones luck??/??/

  • @LukeLovesRose Luck, holy shit man your blowing my mind.

  • Nice interview. Would have enjoyed it more if the loudmouth interviewer could have kept her big yap shut.

She talked more than he did, interrupted him constantly and made a fool of herself.

A junior high school art student would have done a better job than her.

  • Master's Masterclass!

  • Anyone know where someone could see the four minute thing with Yun Jin Kim?

  • The person interviewing him is a unintelligent, unprofessional fool. nobody cares what u have to say.just let james cameron speak

  • i like all of the james cameron movies

  • Best interview of James Cameron for Avatar so far. He talks technically and its what we want to know.

  • Master of film-making at work!

I loved the last thing he said:

"That aught to be enough," LOL

  • Look how smart, clever and confident this master filmmaker is. It's all coming out of him so casually. It's like he lives, breathes, smokes, eats and drinks film. And, yet, he's been exploring the sea for the last 12 years. It's like Cameron has come back to his root... what makes him James Cameron.

I also get the impression that no one else in the business knows so much about the filmmaking process.

  • Thank you so much for this interview!!! it is just natural! JC is so inspirational... I am a Film and TV student... I totaly appreciate and love Cameron's work... Everything the best James!!!!

  • god bless you james. and thank "god" for this blessing of an awakening. much appreciated. was getting tired of this lifeless world :)

  • @LukeLovesRose Well there isn't anywhere nearly as much hatred out there for Titanic and Avatar as you may think there is.The greater majority of people who've seen them dearly love them both and have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for James Cameron as a filmmaker. It's really just the snotty, hateful, spoiled brats out there who are angry and frustrated over the fact that most everyone likes those two films so much that feel the need to bash the films and the fans so incessantly.

  • someone who has the chance to interview such an absolutely amazing man needs to be a bit more professional. Quit interrupting the man, quit moving the camera while he talks, and fix the mic on him, not your rustling. Gee

  • @PrXela

I loved this interview. It allowed Cameron to speak naturally and honestly.

  • @LukeLovesRose I love what cameron says in the interview and always do. he did nothing wrong. i'm am, however, slamming the interviewer for poor video skills. I'm a video student and i'm still learning myself but I know to set the tripod before the interview, set a mic, and hush when he's talking. those simple three aspects make a huge difference for a start

  • This is the interview I had been waiting for about this movie. Finally Jim speaks in depth about the technical development of the project. I loved it; great information.

  • i hate these ads!

  • Great to hear him speak, and hear his ideas. Unfortunately this interviewer needs some practice, nobody is watching to hear you speak... Let James Cameron talk you moron!

  • i want to be film director just like him...

    also as a producer...

    James Cameron ROX!!!!!!

  • hes a VERY imaginative person and his movie is great...AWESOME GUY RIGHT THERE

  • It,s NOT a joke The waco Bros just lost the Lawsuit .a Black Woman wrote the Matrix

Why are you schocked ,Hollywood Rips Ideas from people all the time. It,s nice to see them get Caught...

  • Just ordered my Avatar Blu Ray!!

  • James Cameron a genius. He invented the idea for Avatar in the 80's but didn't want to make in back then because of the lack of technology. So He waited almost 30 years to film it so he could make it perfect. This kind of perfectionism is what film industry needs!

  • @nekku19

He wrote Avatar in 1993 and was inspired by 1950's Broken Arrow (Jimmy Stewart western), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Star Wars Trilogy, Call Me Joe Story, John Carter of Mars and Frank Herbert's Dune books as stated by him as he is a fan of those things including The Dark Crystal which he is a fan of. He wanted a 1999 release but put it on hold until 2006 as he was convinced and started filming.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Thank you, Mr. encyclopedia.

  • @nekku19

It's cause i've been following the Avatar project since 1999 when i heard in 98 he would do the film after being blown by Titanic and read he had to wait until 2006 for the technology which is a good idea when it would have been impossible to do his idea justice.

  • This is in fact the best (tech-background) interview i have seen ever! I have seen Avatar 3 times in 3D myself, as a photographer i just love the compositions he uses in the movie. One of the best Directors in the world proves staying down to earth and normal does the job.

  • A great frontruner but have you heard about the rumor that a woman actually called Sophia Stewart wrote a story called The Third Eye, and she claims that Camerons Terminator film is a ripp of from that story, she also claims that it is the sama case for The Matrix.

I hope that this is not the case since i realy like Camerons films

  • @navylaks2 Cameron's idea for Terminator came from a story written by one of the scriptwriters of The Twilight Zone.

  • @axltyler

actually it's from outer limits, episode Soldier

  • A wonderful, wonderful interview, which makes me all the more appreciative of the effort to produce Avatar. Thank you for taking the time to make this interview.

  • Wow..Passion, determination and knowledge are the key to achieve what he has....simply amazing...the kinda knowledge he has about camera, light etc is outstanding...

  • you have to admit he knows his stuff..

  • this is like listening to a computer nerd from the year 2310

  • OMG! James Cameron, you are AWESOME!

Honestly, folks, I don't know if one filmmaker has ever done more for the use of special effects than James Cameron.

  • Wow, that was a ton of info. It's amazing the amount of work that went into this movie.

  • James Cameron is an arrogant asshole.

  • @awm0912 and only the biggest movie producer in the world

  • @awm0912 And he CAN be an arrogant asshole. Shit, if I were him, I'd be arrogant as fuck. I'd get a huge billboard saying that I'm the best.

And I really don't see how you think he's arrogant, but whatever. To each his own.

  • Camermoron, is a complete jack ass... if he cared about people he'd sale his $100 million home and help the poor or perhaps cut back on his $10,000 bottles of champagne and use the money to a half million people whom are starving to death. this just shows the arogance of the hollywood hipocrits. I am currently organizing a boycott of this jackass' movies.

  • So he works hard and gets successful, and you hate him because he doesn't donate to people who don't work hard and don't get successful? Come on, shut up with this bullshit.

  • Avatar shmavatar, how high do u have to be to sit through this?

  • Comment removed

  • that interveiwer interrupted him like ten times! let the man talk!

  • freakin genious!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • aww this cute

  • I'm glad he clarified that is was not Bill Nye the Science Guy because that is where my brain lead me.

  • JC is the greasest director who has ever and will ever live!

  • couldn't agree more my friend

  • James cameron is the man!! He is great! Titanic and now avatar. My two favorite movies!!

  • man its very interesting to hear him talk, but its rude from the interviewer to interrupt him all the time! let the genius talk who made terminator and avatar!

  • Great stuff Jim!!! I hope to direct one of your films with your camera system.

  • Dude James Cameron is a pretty smart guy...

  • i just love listening to him talk. i could listen to this guy ALL DAY LONG! i wish he could be everyone of my college professors, i swear.

you're the man Jim! love your work

  • James Cameron el director de Avatar tiene 9 nominaciones al Oscar, pero en un principio su familia no estaba el todo de acuerdo con su profesión.

Visita la página de Playboy México para leer la entrevista completa.

  • "hello jim" ;P

  • James Cameron's work is highly the most inspirational reason why I became a film maker. There is not a film fan in the world who isn't scratching their heads over how he made Avatar. This video dives in straight to the heart of how it was all successfully accomplished...this man's creativity and unmatchable imagination.

  • @bvangeem26

Nobody is "scratching their heads", it's CG.

  • People who actually make films know there is no button on the keypad to a computer that says, "make cool" If you knew anything about visual effects and CGI, etc. you would understand it is an unimaginable amount of hard work, and to be able to endure that hard of work to achieve what is the best CGI of all time, being difficult to understand, people are therefor SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS.

  • @bvangeem26 You're talking about the CG as if it's a mistery, it's not.

People are very used to it by now, sure it's ahead of it's time in 2010, by 2015 it will seem like your average holwyood movie.

  • @saintkamus14 No people will look back at Avatar as a milestorne in Cg and digital photography!

  • I consider myself very well versed in modern CG techniques and i'm still in awe of what Cameron has done with each of his new projects.

We know it's CG, but it's CG from the formost pioneer of digital movie technology, so quit bringing it down or post your own stuff for critique.

  • How i'm i "bringing it down" by saying... It's CG, not a mistery.

  • @Bvangeem26 HELL YES I AGREE ON ALL LEVELS 100%. He is my most fav James Cameron OWNS!

  • James Cameron is such an inspirational figure. This interview alone has motivated me to do better in school and not spend the rest of my life smoking weed and doing nothing. If I can achieve just a fraction of what JC has achieved then I would have lived a pretty damn good life.

  • @gibbi8 Hey listen, most of todays legendary filmmakers dropped out, smoked weed and made the biggest movies ever in history: 1. The Godfather trilogy 2. The Star Wars saga 3. Jaws 4. TERMINATOR 1&2 5. TITANIC 6. AVATAR 7. Taxi Driver etc.. Check out L. Alan Brooks. A filmmaker in the making. I love Cameron. He's awesome at everything he touches and love it or hate it, he has bragging rights. He never had one flop. NOT ONE!

  • @gibbi8 i totally agree with you! He has inspired me to become a filmmaker :^)

  • @gibbi8 dude u can still smoke weed,

read james cameron's rolling stone interview. he talks about how much he enjoyed smoking weed and dropping acid (especially acid) through college. Just don't be an idiot while your smoking and sit on your couch. go do somethin!

  • @gibbi8 he is actually an school drop out

  • @pazki so is sam worthington

  • @pazki

    that doesnt mean shit

look at what he has achieved

two of his films tops the highest grossing films list of all time

  • @singlet1991 thats what i mean

  • @gibbi8 Good luck to you mate, i wish you all the best.

  • @gibbi8 apparently 42 people smoke weed and do nothing, therefore gibbi8's comment made them think differently

  • This man makes 2 movies within a span of a decade, more or less.....and they both become the top 2 films of all time!....Cameron is set for all eternity lol. That is one scary man.

  • you said it. just amazing. He is bigger than all including Spilberg, Lucas.

  • FUCK ADS BEFORE VIDEOS!!!

  • yeah

  • Man, If i could get tips from James Cameron personally... I would be so happy! He as an amazing man, and made a great movie! My favorite movie ever!

  • Dude, heck no, it was amazing...

  • It's because of James Cameron that I want to be a filmmaker.

  • This Video is FANTASTIC!

No Stupid Press Junket! Just Cameron!!!

  • its awesome that i go to the same highschool that james cameron did

  • i went to same highschool that Nikola Tesla went... I win :)...

  • genius CG technology & great Movie

  • after listening to this interview, theres no doubt that Cameron is a genius! bring on AVATAR 2

  • brilliant

  • there is no doubt that this man is a genius...

  • one question, how did this guy upload a 27 minute long video on youtube? I thought the limit was 10 minutes ..

  • Its James Cameron, he can do anything!

  • Some accounts, when they're ran by cooperation's, are able to get special permission to make videos last longer than 10 minutes.

  • This is left + right brain in action, he's talking biology, technology, economics, art, photography, visual effect, acting, producing, directing...WOW!

  • How cool is James Cameron.

  • i can't wait for alita! go james!

  • yum yum real time mocap very expensive today ^^ !!!

but maybe with some technologie from Total immersion or project natal from microsoft, we can play video game in real time with motion capture and realtime camera tracking with 3d glasses ^^ without controlers ^^

  • bill nye the science guy!! "inertia is a property of matter" bill! bill! bill! bill! bill! bill! bill nye the science guy

  • I hope that he is going to take it to even a greater level next time if that's possiple to imagine.

  • It will be,he has state-ted in many interviews that *The Door has just bin opened with what is possible with this technology. I cant wait for Battle Angel: Alita! its gonna be gooooood. ;)

  • @navylaks2 Well mate, you can deffently be sure of that he wont do with anything less. He is a very demanding Director, who knows what he want's, and i guess that is why all his films are so epic more or the less :D He will not fail, or atleast he has never disapointet me :D

  • I LOVE this interview. I don't know much about the technology involved in CGI and such, and it was very interesting and informative to listen to the master himself. A movie to experience. Strong performances, beautiful visuals. Zoe I think was the best actor there, yet everyone else did an excellent job as well.

A classical story easy to enjoy and love.

  • I think thats his house..hmmm...its very nice either-way. I watched this movie now about 8 times...and i'm going to the 9th hahaha..I'm addicted, i love his movies! James Cam is da man!

  • damn, 8 times? I am at 7. I cant have anyone beating me to that. I have to watch it again this week.

  • is that his house?

  • @legidud7

It looks more like a hotel room. Which makes sense since hotel rooms are good places for interviews due to seclusion, privacy, quietness, and convenience for both the interviewee and interviewer.

  • Maybe, but that sofa is hideous.

  • Watched Avatar 4 times now going for 5. Damn this guy is a real visionary

  • What a brilliant mind behind such an awesome movie. This movie deserves the title of 2nd All time gross Worldwide...In my mind it should have passed Titanic for #1 =)

  • it still can...

  • i think its well on course for that no: one spot, might be in another 2 or 3 weeks easily...

  • its only been out for like a month..

Titanic has been out for years

  • haha dont worry it will

  • Cameron knows a lot about character rigging and digital lighting. I'm impressed.

  • "aaaaaah" the girl has no idea, Cameron must be a little pissed hehe
