Penn and Teller Bullshit. Episode: College. 24% of US students are expected to graduate AND actually do something in life that requires the degree they obtained. This is numerical value is provided by the college in the episode. Lol. 24%??? Wow.
@lordblazer - but 70% of the high school class of 2011 headed off to college. And for the US population as a whole is a misleading thing to say "only 27% have a degree" because that includes people under the age of 21 who are extremely unlikely to have degrees for obvious reasons.
to add to that avg. A majority of americans typically don't need college degrees to survive. A lot of Americans with degrees that can't find work in their related field has more to do with the lack of jobs there vs. over-saturation in their given markets (NYC, LA for examples).. Also look closely to those in the 70% headed off to college. I wish statisticians didn't lump the 2 yr degree pursuers with the 4 yr degree pursuers. Then look at drop out rates.

Not that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a bad choice (obviously), far from it, but I can't TELL you how many doors were opened to me just because I graduated from there. It DOES matter, to businesses.
This is a terrible trend. I wonder if we will go in the direction of "trade schools" with specialized education, instead of everyone feeling that they need to attend 4 years of uni.
The wage gap between men and women is sad, but when one considers that men will major in electrical engineering and women will major in social work, well...what do you expect?
I think part of it is because employers expect men to be paid more so they give in more easily during wage negotiations, and the other part is women don't expect to be paid more, so they suck at negotiating wages, especially when it comes to getting raises.
Employers are going to base their ENTRY level pay on what they as business owners can afford and have seen-that is, based on their (the owner's) experience on how men and women in the past and/or currently perform at the job offered - in addition to the bgckd. talent/skills/qualifications the new candidate has to get the job. I think it has to be ultra rare for two people man or woman who had IDENTICAL experience, came from the same college that go forth and seek the same entry level job.
Fuck Canadian Uni, tuition is still too high. Im paying 9k a year for engineering at Waterloo. Co-op just barely covers this with the other expenses; hence, it almost 10k per term for school for me. And osap give me nothing because i took initiative and went to a school with co op.
I'm pretty damn sure I saw an official study that shows woman not only have a lower rate of unemployment but actually are being paid just as much if not more than men... this is just a myth that people try to perpetuate to further feminist BS... wanna prove me wrong? Ask a coworker of opposite sex in the same position for the same time how much they make... then talk. don't go by fucking "supposed" statistics that don't personally affect YOU and try to get all mad and self righteous
Yea I looked that up. You don't actually have to pay tuition since its paid by the government. The $160 is how much you need for living expenses in Norway.I would go there if I spoke Norwegian.Fucking US money hungry pricks. Charging hundreds just for books alone.
@lisento That's true but we have been both ignorant of each other's comments. I don't think I'm wrong, I just didn't consider some other factors. But as I said some of the reasoning does come from supply and demand - there are many people not being smart about what they major in to make themselves stand out. By the way what you are referring to is called a monopsony, which explains to an extent large unemployment and low wage rates. Corporate America needs to sort its shit regardless.
@humancondition28 I know right? It's fucking disgusting, these people really piss me off, because it effects everyone and they are too STUPID to get it. >.>
Women make less because choose to focus more on their family. There's nothing wrong with that. If they chose to focus on their jobs I'm sure they'd make virtually as much as men.
@AsifIcarebear3 That's bullshit because they calculate for the time that people spend on their jobs and the jobs they compare are the same. You wouldn't compare a doctors salary to a nurses for example you'd compare a doctor to another doctor. That's what they are doing it has nothing to do with families.
@MistressArte A man that consistently spends maybe 9 hours a day on his job compared to a women who spends perhaps 5 hours a day due to her focusing on her family could easily mean the man earns more/per spent on his job. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.
@AsifIcarebear3 They are ENTRY LEVEL that means it doesn't matter how many hours you have worked THEY ARE THE SAME did you even watch this video? Would you feel the same way if it was your sister starting a job the same as a guy and getting paid less just because she's female? NO or else you're an ASSHOLE.
@MistressArte A man joins your company, wants to work normal hours. A woman comes in, wants to work part time. The man is more valuable, you pay him more per hour spent on his job. Perfectly reasonable. Yes, of course it'd be reasonable if my sister was in this situation.
@AsifIcarebear3 Your not getting it IT'S THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME how the FUCK is that even remotely reasonable? Are you saying that guys that guys are more productive then girls in the same job working the same hours?
@MistressArte You're apparently not reading what I'm writing, so I'll repeat. The man works longer shifts, and is therefore more valuable to the company, so he earns more money per hour spent on the job. She works maybe 5 hour shifts, because women tend to focus on their families, he works 9. I'd rather employ the man and I'd be more inclined to pay him more money than the woman.
If the woman worked 9 hour shifts as well I'm positive the difference in pay would be vastly smaller.
@AsifIcarebear3 They DIDN'T SAY THAT. Watch the video again because apparently you don't grasp English. Let me dumb it down for you THEY ARE WORKING THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME and getting PAID LESS. Go ahead watch the video again because what your making is baseless ASSumptions and looking like a pig. If they said the woman were working less hours then you'd have a pot to piss in but THEY DIDN'T, what part of that are you not grasping?
@MistressArte It starts at around 1:16 - nowhere do they say the men and women work the exact same hours, they only say the men make 21.77/hour and women make 18.43/hour. This means we're back to my original point. Your move.
@AsifIcarebear3 It says ENTRY level that's before they adjust based on how many hours you work, if you look up the article they are quoting it says the same thing there too. An entry level is the level you start off with not a level you earn AFTER you've worked for someone for X amount of time. The data is hourly based so adding it up to more in the end doesn't matter because they divide that by the hours worked. Now do you get it?
@MistressArte If what you say is true, and I don't really care, it seems you are correct. Everything I have said has been true based on the information in this video alone.
@AsifIcarebear3 In the video they said hourly and entry level they never said advanced positions in companies. And you should care if you have a woman in your life that you love, really we all should care because we are people and other people matter don't they?
@MistressArte I'm not American so I had no basis of knowing how entry level jobs worked, and that you had no ability to control the hours spent. Perhaps I should care, but I really don't.
@AsifIcarebear3 Well what's it like in your country? I'm sure there are some disparities and wouldn't it be better to at least empathize and show your support for people fighting against this kind of thing no matter what marginalized group that's dealing with similar things? I'm not saying donate anything just it's good when other people know there are people out there that care.
@MistressArte I guess it should be noted that a man is a "safer bet" than a woman, as women tend to focus on their families further down the road, as previously mentioned, which might be a factor. Of course that shouldn't mean a woman should receive less for the exact same work as a man, but I can't say I blame a company that chooses a man over a woman, even if their qualities are identical.
Call me a douchebag, but at least it's reasonable.
@AsifIcarebear3 No it's not some women just like some men want to be family people, but just because someone has ovaries you shouldn't assume they want to use them. I'm a puppy person not a kid person I wouldn't even know the first thing to do with a baby other then give it to a person that knows that thing to do with it. Having tits doesn't mean you're born with baby instructions, or even like them they shit themselves it's all very gross.
@MistressArte Doesn't really matter, women focus a lot more on their family compared to men, meaning the man is a "safer bet". Men are more consistent, because women can suddenly be required elsewhere. I'm not saying it's right, but it's how it is.
@MistressArte I have a woman in my life that I love, and your use of the word "tits" is harmful...you should care more about her as we are all people =D
@aaronpolitical Tits really is a "bad" word for you? Are you sure your "woman" isn't a girl (meaning you're a boy because you both are kids)? There's no such thing as "bad language" we are adults(maybe) and the word tits is rather cute. If you don't like it then don't talk to anyone who is older then 13. ;-)
@MistressArte I was gently mocking you for your naive comment earlier, where you wondered why this study used statistics on men instead of both men and women. I trust you understand the reason more fully, now? =D
@MistressArte Uhh, nevermind. I'm listening again and it's like it's a completely different video than the one I watched the first time. I thought I heard something about using only men's wages because they're more reliably getting a job right out of college. Which makes sense, of course, we don't have kids so we do enter the work force immediately, more consistently. Not a sexist statement, a statistical one.
And I thought you were upset about that. So, umm, just nevermind. LOL!
once you are able to answer why employers look for people with 5 to 8 years of experience in order to get the entry-level job then we can go from there. I think American college graduates need to definitely look for jobs overseas.
I finished university in the UK with $1,000 of debt. Moved here to the US, saw the prices of college tuition. !!!WTF!!! Absolutely no chance I would have bothered to get a degree if I had to be saddled with that kind of debt. None. Forget it. Now... with so few jobs on offer and you're competing with people who have two Masters degrees for your dead-end entry job... a degree is pointless. My brother took the other route, didn't get a degree and entered the work force earlier... he earns more.
Come to Canada... Tuition is only, at most, $6000 a year and is partially tax deductible. Same goes for textbooks, rent and public transit monthly passes.
The BEST advice for anyone going to college is this. First decide, do you want to continue living in the area you are now, or do you plan to move after college? If you plan on living in the same area, you MUST find a college AWAY from home that will teach you something NEW to bring to the area. Want to move? Attend your local college and then bring your knowledge to an area that is lacking in that area. Otherwise, you risk looking for a job in an area that is already saturated w/ applicants.
try and get a degree with grants and work study - go to community college for and AA then transfer to Univ. Live off campus and work your way through... It can be done.
you should break it down by degrees. i dont think technical / professional degree holder's wages decreasing, it is art majors who are graduating to McD jobs
Feminism SUCKS! You want more money ladies? Go take the hard classes, get great grades, graduate, go to grad school, bust your ass working long hours & on the weekend (while everyone else is partying), graduate, practice the hell out of your job interview presentation as if you were at Bill Gates' desk, get the job, agree to take no maternity leave and work long hours/take on more responsibilities over the YEARS to get promoted/move up. Do the same & you'll be paid the same.
@7575047 women actually have a higher graduation rate from college than men at this point and we earn higher degrees. There is no reason for a difference in entry level pay between men and women. If women take maternity leave and family leave later on, then yes it affects pay, but there should be no difference upon entry. This affects women all the way down to retail jobs. Two teens gets paid differently at Gap despite having the same responsibilities bc one is a boy and one is a girl.
@samiam2088 ..Aside the Gap/teen example, I would clearly point out if she (college grad) doesn't sign an agreement at entry to NOT take maternity leave (as men do by their biology) then that will affect her pay. I also would point out that your mention of women earning higher degrees needs to be elucidated as to what those degrees actually are. I wholeheartedly agree there should be no diff. in pay for equal work responsibilities, background experience/training and merit-based promotion.
@7575047 Women earning higher degrees is more a statistic and in response to your very hostile post that sounded like you think women expect to have things handed to them. No one in this video said that women deserve equal pay on the basis of being a woman. Women deserve equal pay because we get the same degrees, pay the same college tuition and take on the same responsibilities. Feminism helped women into the work force, equal pay for equal work.
@samiam2088 ......Allow me to introduce the Professor Tom Leykis and his guest Dr. Warren Farrell of whom wrote a book about this very topic entitled "Why Men Earn More" discussing his findings. They may be shocking to women in the workplace who "think" they are NOT getting equal pay. In reality, men are much more screwed than believed.
@p8in2008 yeah TYT do a video on how uni undergrad tuition is subsidized in canada, and how the most you'll pay for a year of top university here is around 6 g's.
@p8in2008 yep, books are still absolutely retarded tho. but there's a website either selling or renting digital copies of textbooks that cost hundreds for about $15. canada ftw.
@ImmaDwarfKicker in case you didn't do your research University isn't cheap, you can't just go around posting bullshit cause it's not true, looks like your the one who needs extra education since your posting retarded comments.
@Tethloach1 I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying you are undereducated if you are, in fact intending to attend a University. It's you're*, not your.
I roof for a living...... I make a killing, go into trades subcontract yourself as soon as you're qualified to run jobsites yourself. This is the only way a non-college graduate will truly succeed in today's world.
Unfortunately, all these encumbrances to getting a college degree work to the benefit of conservative groups, because when a student doesn't get the opportunity to enter college, and get exposed to different ideas, they tend think more myopically, and are therefore more likely to fall prey to conservative dogma. It is no wonder that conservative politicians, every chance they get, want to cut financial aid for higher education. I guess the GOP will rule for several more decades.
The disparity in entry level salaries between men and women, who are college graduates, has more to do with the type of careers that the two genders gravitate towards. More men go into math and science based careers than women do, but that is slowly changing. More money generally is made in those fields than those which are not math and science based. Unfortunately Ana and Alyona make it out to be that the entire disparity in gender salaries is based on purposeful discrimination. It is not.
@alphacause Agreed. There's also a difference regarding traditional gender roles to consider. A male who cannot provide support is considered a deadbeat and a loser. Actually, he's struggle to even get a date in the first place. Watch the typical reaction of a woman on a date when a guy is short on cash and asks her to contribute to pay for dinner. It's over. That would be considered to be an unforgivable sin. Guys are very driven to obtain high paying jobs. Their "fitness" is judged by this.
@AKSBSU You are absolutely correct in this statement. What I find funny is that if women are hell bent on being equal in almost every way with men, then why is it unfair to ask her to pay her fair share on a date? I know that violates our commonly held rules on chivalry, but chivalry was created in a time when ONLY men could get good paying jobs, so it made sense. If women want to be the equal of men, then they should behave equally in all areas, not just in areas which are convenient to them.
@alphacause If it makes you feel better, I never assume a guy will pay for me on a date and always offer to pay for myself. I just don't argue when he insists on paying ;-) On the another note women actually have a higher graduation rate from college than men at this point and we earn higher degrees. There is no reason that there is a difference in entry level pay between men and women. If women take maternity leave a family leave later on, then yes it affects pay, but not upon entry.
@alphacause Many of these studies also compare the salaries of men and women doing the SAME job. And men still, on average, get paid more to do the same work. What's the excuse for that?
As the human population increases, each person becomes less valuable, as well, high school education, and post secondary also become less valuable as more people go into each field and specialization is gone.
What do you mean 'this generation'? I'm gen X and we're already not doing as well as the one before it. Are you telling me gen Y's going to do even worse?!? Shit, I think it's about time for a revolution!

I'd like to know where that most kids come out of college with only 24K in loan debt.
Most kids I know have MUCH more debt.
Many community colleges are at least 9-14 thousand per year for tuition...not counting room and board(which is more than tuition)...
we're not even talking about those who went to college for 4 years or more...
...closer to or over 100K in debt for many!
and then they get out and many can only find jobs at minimum wage!

Women make less because choose to focus more on their family. There's nothing wrong with that. If they chose to focus on their jobs I'm sure they'd make virtually as much as men.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 That's bullshit because they calculate for the time that people spend on their jobs and the jobs they compare are the same. You wouldn't compare a doctors salary to a nurses for example you'd compare a doctor to another doctor. That's what they are doing it has nothing to do with families.
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte A man that consistently spends maybe 9 hours a day on his job compared to a women who spends perhaps 5 hours a day due to her focusing on her family could easily mean the man earns more/per spent on his job. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 They are ENTRY LEVEL that means it doesn't matter how many hours you have worked THEY ARE THE SAME did you even watch this video? Would you feel the same way if it was your sister starting a job the same as a guy and getting paid less just because she's female? NO or else you're an ASSHOLE.
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte A man joins your company, wants to work normal hours. A woman comes in, wants to work part time. The man is more valuable, you pay him more per hour spent on his job. Perfectly reasonable. Yes, of course it'd be reasonable if my sister was in this situation.
Ad hominem? Oh please.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 Your not getting it IT'S THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME how the FUCK is that even remotely reasonable? Are you saying that guys that guys are more productive then girls in the same job working the same hours?
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte You're apparently not reading what I'm writing, so I'll repeat. The man works longer shifts, and is therefore more valuable to the company, so he earns more money per hour spent on the job. She works maybe 5 hour shifts, because women tend to focus on their families, he works 9. I'd rather employ the man and I'd be more inclined to pay him more money than the woman.
If the woman worked 9 hour shifts as well I'm positive the difference in pay would be vastly smaller.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 They DIDN'T SAY THAT. Watch the video again because apparently you don't grasp English. Let me dumb it down for you THEY ARE WORKING THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME and getting PAID LESS. Go ahead watch the video again because what your making is baseless ASSumptions and looking like a pig. If they said the woman were working less hours then you'd have a pot to piss in but THEY DIDN'T, what part of that are you not grasping?
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte It starts at around 1:16 - nowhere do they say the men and women work the exact same hours, they only say the men make 21.77/hour and women make 18.43/hour. This means we're back to my original point. Your move.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 It says ENTRY level that's before they adjust based on how many hours you work, if you look up the article they are quoting it says the same thing there too. An entry level is the level you start off with not a level you earn AFTER you've worked for someone for X amount of time. The data is hourly based so adding it up to more in the end doesn't matter because they divide that by the hours worked. Now do you get it?
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte If what you say is true, and I don't really care, it seems you are correct. Everything I have said has been true based on the information in this video alone.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 In the video they said hourly and entry level they never said advanced positions in companies. And you should care if you have a woman in your life that you love, really we all should care because we are people and other people matter don't they?
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte I'm not American so I had no basis of knowing how entry level jobs worked, and that you had no ability to control the hours spent. Perhaps I should care, but I really don't.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 Well what's it like in your country? I'm sure there are some disparities and wouldn't it be better to at least empathize and show your support for people fighting against this kind of thing no matter what marginalized group that's dealing with similar things? I'm not saying donate anything just it's good when other people know there are people out there that care.
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte I guess it should be noted that a man is a "safer bet" than a woman, as women tend to focus on their families further down the road, as previously mentioned, which might be a factor. Of course that shouldn't mean a woman should receive less for the exact same work as a man, but I can't say I blame a company that chooses a man over a woman, even if their qualities are identical.
Call me a douchebag, but at least it's reasonable.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@AsifIcarebear3 No it's not some women just like some men want to be family people, but just because someone has ovaries you shouldn't assume they want to use them. I'm a puppy person not a kid person I wouldn't even know the first thing to do with a baby other then give it to a person that knows that thing to do with it. Having tits doesn't mean you're born with baby instructions, or even like them they shit themselves it's all very gross.
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte Doesn't really matter, women focus a lot more on their family compared to men, meaning the man is a "safer bet". Men are more consistent, because women can suddenly be required elsewhere. I'm not saying it's right, but it's how it is.
AsifIcarebear3 5 months ago
@MistressArte I have a woman in my life that I love, and your use of the word "tits" is harmful...you should care more about her as we are all people =D
aaronpolitical 5 months ago
@aaronpolitical Tits really is a "bad" word for you? Are you sure your "woman" isn't a girl (meaning you're a boy because you both are kids)? There's no such thing as "bad language" we are adults(maybe) and the word tits is rather cute. If you don't like it then don't talk to anyone who is older then 13. ;-)
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte I was gently mocking you for your naive comment earlier, where you wondered why this study used statistics on men instead of both men and women. I trust you understand the reason more fully, now? =D
aaronpolitical 5 months ago
@aaronpolitical But it did use statistics on men and women and no..o.O
MistressArte 5 months ago
@MistressArte Uhh, nevermind. I'm listening again and it's like it's a completely different video than the one I watched the first time. I thought I heard something about using only men's wages because they're more reliably getting a job right out of college. Which makes sense, of course, we don't have kids so we do enter the work force immediately, more consistently. Not a sexist statement, a statistical one.
And I thought you were upset about that. So, umm, just nevermind. LOL!
aaronpolitical 5 months ago
@MistressArte
once you are able to answer why employers look for people with 5 to 8 years of experience in order to get the entry-level job then we can go from there. I think American college graduates need to definitely look for jobs overseas.

7575047 5 months ago
@7575047 women actually have a higher graduation rate from college than men at this point and we earn higher degrees. There is no reason for a difference in entry level pay between men and women. If women take maternity leave and family leave later on, then yes it affects pay, but there should be no difference upon entry. This affects women all the way down to retail jobs. Two teens gets paid differently at Gap despite having the same responsibilities bc one is a boy and one is a girl.
samiam2088 5 months ago
@samiam2088 ..Aside the Gap/teen example, I would clearly point out if she (college grad) doesn't sign an agreement at entry to NOT take maternity leave (as men do by their biology) then that will affect her pay. I also would point out that your mention of women earning higher degrees needs to be elucidated as to what those degrees actually are. I wholeheartedly agree there should be no diff. in pay for equal work responsibilities, background experience/training and merit-based promotion.
7575047 5 months ago
@7575047 Women earning higher degrees is more a statistic and in response to your very hostile post that sounded like you think women expect to have things handed to them. No one in this video said that women deserve equal pay on the basis of being a woman. Women deserve equal pay because we get the same degrees, pay the same college tuition and take on the same responsibilities. Feminism helped women into the work force, equal pay for equal work.

I guess the GOP will rule for several more decades.
alphacause 5 months ago
The disparity in entry level salaries between men and women, who are college graduates, has more to do with the type of careers that the two genders gravitate towards. More men go into math and science based careers than women do, but that is slowly changing. More money generally is made in those fields than those which are not math and science based. Unfortunately Ana and Alyona make it out to be that the entire disparity in gender salaries is based on purposeful discrimination. It is not.
alphacause 5 months ago 2
@alphacause Agreed. There's also a difference regarding traditional gender roles to consider. A male who cannot provide support is considered a deadbeat and a loser. Actually, he's struggle to even get a date in the first place. Watch the typical reaction of a woman on a date when a guy is short on cash and asks her to contribute to pay for dinner. It's over. That would be considered to be an unforgivable sin. Guys are very driven to obtain high paying jobs. Their "fitness" is judged by this.
AKSBSU 5 months ago 10
@AKSBSU You are absolutely correct in this statement. What I find funny is that if women are hell bent on being equal in almost every way with men, then why is it unfair to ask her to pay her fair share on a date? I know that violates our commonly held rules on chivalry, but chivalry was created in a time when ONLY men could get good paying jobs, so it made sense. If women want to be the equal of men, then they should behave equally in all areas, not just in areas which are convenient to them.
alphacause 5 months ago
@alphacause If it makes you feel better, I never assume a guy will pay for me on a date and always offer to pay for myself. I just don't argue when he insists on paying ;-) On the another note women actually have a higher graduation rate from college than men at this point and we earn higher degrees. There is no reason that there is a difference in entry level pay between men and women. If women take maternity leave a family leave later on, then yes it affects pay, but not upon entry.
