I own a Motorola Atrix rooted and running Cyanogen Mod 7 w/ a 1,3GHz overclock kernel, and I also own an iPhone 4S. The 4S is significantly faster in day to day use. That is because they design their OS specifically for that device.

@TalesOfWar Tegra 2 gives great performance. It's smooth and no lag especially with ICS which gives native multicore support. I am no way claiming Android is perfect, I'm just saying it's better. Gingerbread (2.3) does not have native multicore support, which is why it might seem underwhelming. Tegra 3 is a quad core, which is real step forward. The graphics capabilities are better. GTA 3 runs better on android than ios.

Iphone is too common to be impressive, I usually get more notice with android since it has a huge display with more vivid detail. Also, this is not just about Smartphones, it's about tablets. @foooodturnip true. I use 3g when goin places but turn it off when not using it. I also don't have the screen at max brightness. I Listen to spotify almost all day, at night to. I send texts and some times, rarely, play games. Again, if I charge it at night then it lasts for the whole day, through the next night and the next day. In the evening that day i might have to charge it. the battery stretch is waaay better than on my previous samsung, not even comparable. its awesome
@Lilihieraax Well turning off 3g is not how everybody uses their phone. Most people leave it on because it's an important feature and if you are using wi-fi, that would use even more battery. You'd still get a better battery life with a razr maxx and you'd have the benefit of LTE 4g (internet speeds up to 30 mbps).

When going through pages, left and right, it was a kind of frame by frame transition, very fast but not as smooth as on the iphone. And faster and smoother has nothing to do with design, sorry

@Lilihieraax I just want to add before Iphone 4s, there was definitely problems with smoothness and speed. Dual core kind of fixed everything for both OS'. When you play with ICS (android 4.0) you can tell a lot of work was put into it. Also, Android has true multitasking which leads to some of that but most dual core phones have fixed that issue.

And the transitions in the OS is just remarkable. The iPhone was the first phone with the smooth transitions, something Steve focused ALOT on achieving because it gives a whole new feeling to a device. But theres no observable difference between iphone 4S and 4. Only with video and photo - again, microscopic things
@Lilihieraax That's not true multitasking, they use a form of tombstoning like WP7. A dual core added a lot of speed to ios, that was the first thing noticeably different, not a minor thing.

So it really doesn't matter in the broad perspective, but yes i agree, in maybe two or three phone generations it will matter. But not with what they are used for right now. In fact, if they are catching up, apple would even make it faster than the tegra 3. E.g, if they use a dual-core cortex a15, it will still be faster than the tegra 3. And, apple has more cash to spend so they use better GPUs than Nvidia. But of course the tegra 3 is faster than the a5. But a5 GPU had dominated all b4 tg3

@M0rthyM0rdoR The microsoft surface isn't a consumer device nor is it a tablet, it's meant for retail stores, hotels, and restaurants. I think it's safe to say the surface never caught on. Like I said though Android is solid and actually better than Iphone, so whether or not Apple released the iphone, the android devices would be great. The app selection is fine on Android. Apple did good with the ipod, I'll give them that. Ipad is probably the first good tablet to have no physical keyboard

give credit where its due. Steve was a genius at marketing and converting people to buy his products and maintain loyalty down to the emotional level. There is some things that are excellent on their products but they are not a panacea to the demands of technological advancement. Apple was just a major contributer not the inventor. they tried to take something open source and make it closed at first but failed. they later released the whole thing as open source because there wasn't any other option that would allow it to be improved substantially by outside communities such as KDE. I own a Motorola Atrix rooted and running Cyanogen Mod 7 w/ a 1,3GHz overclock kernel, and I also own an iPhone 4S. The 4S is significantly faster in day to day use. That is because they design their OS specifically for that device.

Let's hope this time around it is, otherwise it'd just going to be another case of history repeating. It's all down to the software at the end of the day. The iOS devices have "lower" hardware specs, but they run a lot smoother because they're optimised properly for it. Same with Windows Phone 7. Lesser hardware, still a more fluid user experience than Android

@TalesOfWar Tegra 2 gives great performance. It's smooth and no lag especially with ICS which gives native multicore support. I am no way claiming Android is perfect, I'm just saying it's better. Gingerbread (2.3) does not have native multicore support, which is why it might seem underwhelming. Tegra 3 is a quad core, which is real step forward. The graphics capabilities are better. GTA 3 runs better on android than ios.

Iphone is too common to be impressive, I usually get more notice with android since it has a huge display with more vivid detail. Also, this is not just about Smartphones, it's about tablets. You don't get 2 days of battery life of actually using your device without charging or hitting the lock button and leaving it in your pocket. Apple even advertises around 13 hours not 2 days.

@foooodturnip true. I use 3g when goin places but turn it off when not using it. I also don't have the screen at max brightness. I Listen to spotify almost all day, at night to. I send texts and some times, rarely, play games. Again, if I charge it at night then it lasts for the whole day, through the next night and the next day. In the evening that day i might have to charge it. the battery stretch is waaay better than on my previous samsung, not even comparable. its awesome

@Lilihieraax Well turning off 3g is not how everybody uses their phone. Most people leave it on because it's an important feature and if you are using wi-fi, that would use even more battery. You'd still get a better battery life with a razr maxx and you'd have the benefit of LTE 4g (internet speeds up to 30 mbps).

@airfoemoe "faster" is ofcourse debatable. When you run the OS there isn't any difference if you have two or one chips. "Smoother" is also debatable. The android I had on a samsung was kind of laggy. When going through pages, left and right, it was a kind of frame by frame transition, very fast but not as smooth as on the iphone. And faster and smoother has nothing to do with design, sorry

@Lilihieraax Yea it does, the designs aren't that different. I'm talking about ICS 4.0, it is the latest version of android. The only phone that has it officially is the galaxy nexus.

@Lilihieraax I just want to add before Iphone 4s, there was definitely problems with smoothness and speed. Dual core kind of fixed everything for both OS'. When you play with ICS (android 4.0) you can tell a lot of work was put into it. Also, Android has true multitasking which leads to some of that but most dual core phones have fixed that issue.

@airfoemoe yeah, theres also multitasking on the iphone. You can run all apps in the background, switch between then easaly. Im using an iphone 4 now, not the S. And the transitions in the OS is just remarkable. The iPhone was the first phone with the smooth transitions, something Steve focused ALOT on achieving because it gives a whole new feeling to a device. But theres no observable difference between iphone 4S and 4. Only with video and photo - again, microscopic things

@Lilihieraax That's not true multitasking, they use a form of tombstoning like WP7. A dual core added a lot of speed to ios, that was the first thing noticeably different, not a minor thing.

@Lilihieraax Well GTA 3 and other CPU intensive apps run better on the 4s without problems. So I would hardly call that microscopic. Also, siri isn't running on the 4.

@airfoemoe they run better of course, but only a microscopic portion of the apps in the app store are cpu intensive, the rest could be run on a phone with half the capacity. So it really doesn't matter in the broad perspective, but yes i agree, in maybe two or three phone generations it will matter. But not with what they are used for right now. So still, not enough to bring customers to the other side

@airfoemoe oh yeah, because the ipad 3 is getting a 2048x1536 screen. So 1080p will be inferior. 2k will be the best shot. Plus, the GPU in the A5 is nearly on the standard of the tegra 3 wait till A6

@dagr8master If they are going retina they won't. A5 is like Tegra 2, A6 will be playing catch up with Tegra 3. Asus already announced 1080p for their tablets, Apple only has a rumor.

@airfoemoe the display suppliers are actually selling the ipad 3 retina panels. google it. And even though they'll be catching up, it won't affect the performance of the device. In fact, if they are catching up, apple would even make it faster than the tegra 3. E.g, if they use a dual-core cortex a15, it will still be faster than the tegra 3. And, apple has more cash to spend so they use better GPUs than Nvidia. But of course the tegra 3 is faster than the a5. But a5 GPU had dominated all b4 tg3

@airfoemoe typical fanboy. The A6 hasn't launched yet. And I did also say that the tegra 3 is better. Imagination technologies are experienced in making mobile GPUs, and look for benchmarks between ANY tegra 2 tablet versus ipad. In terms of CPU and GPU. So this biased fanboy attitude of 'I won't look at benchmarks, statistics, or reality. Those apple people are sheep, I am smart, and android is always better' doesn't always work. P.S not all apple users who PREFER an iphone are dumb sheep

@dagr8master Don't need to when you own both devices. I own both, I know what I'm talking about. A5 is pretty shitty. My droid 4 gives better performance on GTA 3 than an iphone 4s does. All the droid 4 has is a texa omap.

@dagr8master Sharp has no exclusive deal with apple, it'll be on android. You are throwing out the term fandroid, obviously you can't come to terms with logic that an open OS is better, claiming apple is better when most spec showdowns, android shows up on top. When the iphone 4 came out, it was already outclassed by droid x and the evo series. It happens every year, apple announces product, superior in every way android device is announced. I was mentioning the TI because it boasts better perf.

@airfoemoe And all those are your opinions. Apple may treat consumers like retards, but I'd get an iphone for the apps and functionality. There are half a million apps, which have all been reviewed for malware, crashing, inappropriate content etc. I know android may beat in customizability and performance. But I don't care about those. Remember, it is a phone. I do most of my work on my laptop. So will you just shut up and accept that many people do prefer a closed OS! NOT EVERYONE IS YOU!

@dagr8master Well you just supporting a company that is holding technology back. Android has all the apps you need, most of the apps are just useless BS. Android has all the main apps such netflix, hulu, skype, etc. I'm not saying everyone is me. Seriously if you hate android so much, then go with windows phone 7. iphone is hardly different than android, you might as well buy an android and not miss out on feature such as performance and adobe flash. I mean life without 4g lte must be rough.
