There can be no doubt: Mark Reizen was the soul of Russia. How immeasurably moving his singing was. And yes, the pianist, Vladimir Khvostin is marvelous, too, in these recordings.
one of the saddest performances you are ever going to see. the way Reizen depicts the meaning of the song is masterly, and it is a real shame there is not a translation here (I had to compare it with another version).
Mark Reizen died on November 25, 1992 in Moscow at age 97. He had a distinguished and very long career. This song was recorded for a TV show at age 85.
mark reizen is great. let us not forget the accompanist though. i don't know his name but he is feeling the music just as much as mr. reizen. they are BOTH absolutely fantastic in their own right but together they made magic.
You are not the first to ask about the pianist, and you are right - he deserves credit. Please see modified information, also comments of one year ago.
This recording is amazing on so many levels, Reizen has this quality about him that allows you to know him completely just by the sound of his voice, truly beautiful
Thank you very much for having posted this video clip to share it with us. Mark Reizen is unbelievable, and the pianissimo at the end is just fabulous. May I ask you to put your very good website up again? I regretted not having downloaded your entire website while it was there. It was a fantastic representation of Russian singing.
I am speechless....this yanks at my heart with such incredible longing and sadness...where Dmitri sings it with the anger and passion of youth, Riezen brings a nostalgic quality, almost a resignation, to this beautiful song.....amazing...
Sorry for the omission. The pianist, Vladimir Khvostin, made with Reizen the two LP set and TV program including these songs, as well as a 1975 LP of Tchaikovsky songs. He recorded with other famous artists including live jubiee of Zara Dolukhanova. I was told that unfortunately this talented artist died relatively young. I was unable so far to find more information about him.
A miracle! Heartstoppingly beautiful! One of the greatest artists ever, anywhere, at any age!
The only thing his age brings is a deeply moving sensitivity that comes from experience, wisdom, and reflection - nothing that isn't beautiful. I'm overwhelmed.
Thank you so much, Mr. Han. Can't stop watching this.
And he was not finished. He issued an album with Russian amd Ukrainian songs at 87, then came back on stage to sing Gremin for his 90th in 1985. (see video) He died of a very sudden stroke at age 97 in 1992.
Achingly beautiful, to the final remarkable note.

I am sorry, vhan2007 !
Could you change the tags and write Khvostin's name down as well in the performances you already posted?
I know how important for a performance is a real good partner. People could find things with him also.

Lo impresionante es que aun a esa edad tiene voz, no la misma de años anteriores, pero si la musicalidad y la intenciòn!.
Gracias por colgarlo.
