  • I remember trying this way back when, and it never worked. The toothpicks would always come out of the cubes.

  • i just tried this and the damn toothpicks kept breaking, son of a bitch time for timer.

  • MOM! Theres a piece of cheese dancing in the kitchen! Where's the camera?

  • Shouldn't this be for when it is not raining and when it is, like hot as hell's ass?

  • OMG, I had forgotten all about this one. I was stunned to watch this again after so many years!

  • I remember these during saturday morning cartoons, with school house rock. The good old days for sure!!!!

  • Y am I the first thumbs down in 50k views >:(

  • Okay, when I was a kid I thought he said "or whatever juice you want," not "or whatever turns you on." I was an innocent little 6 year old.

  • Forgot about this until now. This used to be on A LOT. I never knew they mentioned pomegranate juice. I never heard of, or saw, pomegranate anything back in the 80's. Wonder if it was more common in other states than NY? Anyway, I made these and we even had the horrid old silver metal ice trays. I also remember having the white, plastic juice pop molds. Wonder if we got those before or after my attempt at recreating this commercial's recipe. lol

  • That boy licks his sunshine on a stick with a bit too much verve...

  • sunshine on a stick xD i love this video

  • I did this often as a child with orange juice. But everytime I'd try to "Carefully poke the sticks" into the plastic wrap they would move. But they still froze and I would have sunshine on a stick.

  • I remember the pomegranate suggestion.I also saw this not long after seeing someone with a pomegranate in 4th grade class, when he suggested pomegranate,I immediately thought:Eeeewww, you mean that gross-looking fruit?

  • You know, I don't believe I've ever actually twiddled my thumbs. Twiddled other things, yes, but never thumbs.

  • Now the networks would be afraid to air this without a legal warning telling stupid people that the toothpick poses a choking hazard.

  • I noticed these posts are termed "Vinatge 80's". They are, actually, "Vintage 70's". ABC was still airing them up until about 1984...at the MOST. I think they ram from something like 1975 to early 1980's.

  • I notice these posts are termed "Vintage 80's" They are, actually "Vinatge 80's"....they were STILL airing them up until maybe 1984, at the most.

  • Loved this too!!

  • Did Frank Welker do this voice?

  • what about an ice cube tray full of hookers...well thats what turns me on

  • We did this all of the time when we were kids. They actually tasted pretty good!

  • I need that juice that"turns you on"

  • Pretty cool that he refers to pomegranate juice way back then. It was definitely not a known juice for households with children, and U.S. consumers were not widely aware of it until just a few years ago when the POM brand launched and then you saw it everywhere... Also, he shouldn't say frozen juice is a "snack". It's not solid food! This ad never tempted me at all when I was a kid.

  • @krewgarr

Well, you were way cooler than the rest of us as a child.

  • @halrkane Thanks for posting these. I love seeing this guy again.

  • @krewgarr I actually did try the orange-juice cubes when I was a kid, but didn't bother with the plastic wrap. They still turned out OK (and delicious) -- the only difference was that the toothpicks weren't perpendicular to the flat face of the cube, but that didn't bother me. But you're right: They're not "snacks." I figured "pomegranate juice" was meant as a joke. Then, when POM came out a few years ago, the first thing I thought was, "Wow, now I can make pomegranate Sunshine on a Stick!"

  • @krewgarr I knew what a pomegrante was when I was a kid cuz my Dad got us into eating exotic fruits like that, mangos and parsimon (don't know the spelling). He was from south america. But I never had the juice. And today I can't figure out how to find a decent ripe pomegranate. I always break them open too soon cuz the stores put them out before they're ready. And they're too damn expensive to get it wrong!!!!!

  • @krewgarr I believe you are incorrect. I recall eating pomegranates and drinking pomegranate juice as a child in the mid 70. Pomegranate syrup (Grenadine) was also very popular. They used to be commonly called "Chinese apples" before the Korean War.

  • Who is the voice of Timer?

  • @JGCooney

Timer's voice was provided by actor Lennie Weinrib.

  • @halrkane Lennie Weinrib was also Scrappy Doo, wasn't he?

  • @JGCooney Yes, you are correct.

  • @JGCooney Yup. And Hunk and Lotor of 'Voltron', 'Magic Mongo', Filmation's "The New Adventures of Batman", and lots of other stuff. He was as busy as Frank Welker.

  • @halrkane Wonder if he was related to Gary Weinrib, aka Geddy Lee.

  • Who's lawnmower is that running?

  • or whatever turns u on? wat r u a perv?

  • OMFG!I MISS THE 80S!!!!!!!!!

  • Man, as a kid in the 1970s (I was born in 1969) I used to watch this, among the other "Timer" PSAs, on Saturday mornings. Brings back fond, nostalgic memories of me sitting in front of the living room 25 inch color tv (the only tv we had in the house. Unlike today where people practically have a tv in each and every room) watching my favorite Saturday morning cartoons while eating bowl after bowl of my favorite breakfast cereals. The 1970s really was the golden age of saturday morning cartoons.

  • @classicphile did you watch jabberjaw or clue club

  • @lockenjr Yep, jabberjaw, clue club and hong kong phooey, amazing chan and the chan clan, dastardly and muttley, etc, etc.

  • @classicphile what part of the country did you grow up in?. I grew up in the northwest..

  • @lockenjr Northeast. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY

  • I used to make those all the time as a kid, but without the toothpicks.

    (We were poor.)

  • @TheGreatMozeek I feel for you. We too were poor. Not only could we not afford toothpicks, but we also couldnt afford the plastic wrap, and the orange juice (or the lemonade, or the pomegranate juice, etc)

  • My problem was that there is nothing worse than a bored kid waiting for ice to freeze! I think half the time I ended up just giving up and drinking it out of the icetray LOL

  • This reminds me of the animations on Dr. Seuss films.

  • or what ever turns you on?!?!?!? holy shit different eras...

  • i remember wanting to make these as a kid

  • I had to read a book, when it rained!!

  • Ooohh! Thanks a lot 70's vintage commercial, now I'm dying for a refreshing, chilled glass of orange juice. :<

I'm gonna have try this sometime. Man, PSAs back in the 70s and 80s were corny and a bit silly, but damn were they creative at ways of giving kids helpful advice and tips of eating healthy snacks (cheese, orange cubesicle snacks, etc) while still enjoying them. =D

  • i miss these old commericals.

  • When I was a kid I remember seeing this on a Saturday and dialing my cousin like a madman with this "recipe",lol!

  • Timer gave me the creeps when I was a kid, and he still does. lol

  • somthin tells me those things wouldnt turn out so good!

  • @jerryjuicebag Mine turned out great. I still make em

  • lol another one of timer lol I used to watch this on tv when i was a kid

  • "Or whatever turns you on" I don't know about you, but THAT turns me off.

  • Now just watch as I go through it, really all you need to do it

Is some kind of juice and just a few toothpicks

OK now take an empty ice tray and fill it with Orange juice

Or lemonade Or pomegranate juice or whatever turns you on

Then cover the tray with plastic wrap, carefully poke the toothpicks through the plastic

    Put it in the freezer

    And in a few hours.

    Presto! Stacks of Snacks

Dont wait until it rains to try this nifty trick

Youll have a fun time eating Sunshine on a Stick

  • Hi Time for Timer and time to make a weeks supply of healthy afterschool snacks, Now some weekend when its raining and your mother is complaining,

cuz youre hanging round just twiddling your thumbs

Tell your mom that youve been itchin to make something in the kitchen

and oh yes the mess will be a minimum

But the thing thats gointa please her is you make it in the freezer

And nothing could be easier to fix...

  • whatever turns you on? ya, ok lets do it with the lemon juice XD

  • i couldn't twiddle my thumbs without them touching until i was 13

  • This takes me back. Though I never understood what company made this commercial and why.

  • It doesn't work so well with milk.

  • @4thtroika it works well if you add some sugar and a little vanilla to it and turn it into ice milk. Or am I the only one who's mom used to make that? Like a poor mans version of ice cream.

  • @SerjHasEmerged Okay, I didn't know about that part. He's the one that said to use "whatever turns you on." We used to get ice milk all the time. The lemon flavor was really good.

  • Brings back childhood memories! Thanks for posting.

  • "Or what ever turns you on"......

  • @SoulHadou,

    couldnt have said it better!

  • Another one of my favorite time for timer commercials. But I love the "You are what you eat" commercial with him. It's a good message as well.

  • Pomegranate juice turns me on!

BTW: Anyone beside me see the reference to this PSA on Venture Bros?

  • on venture brothers? Ha I sometimes watch that, I still wanna punch Hank Which ep is the reference from?

  • One of the latest Season 4 episodes entitled "Handsome Ransom". It's near the end when Monarch has Captain Sunshine trapped.

  • Yeah, where the Monarch is about to hit Captain Sunshine with a solar ray and he says "I'll have a fun time eating sunshine on a stick!"

  • Song's stuck in my head :)

  • Personally, I can't believe he said "pomegranate juice" -- not something anyone I know had even heard of, back in the '70s.

  • I was thinking the same thing. I do remember that pomegranates were being sold in the grocery store back then but don't recal the juice. It is very expensive but I would say cranberry would have been more known or welches grape. But I don't remember pomegranate juice in the 70's. I used to make these ice tray popcicles though, with sugar and realmon lemon juice. I remember they were very bitter and very sweet.

  • I used to drive my mom crazy making these! The trick I used was to wait until they freeze up a little before you add the toothpicks.

  • Yeah, when we made em our toothpicks flopped over despite the plastic wrap.

  • Sunshine on a stick? What is that, some werid slang for estascy?

  • No, this is a vintage commercial/PSA that appeared during Saturday morning cartoons in the early 1980s! It promotes healthier eating.

  • Uh, I know...It was a joke...

  • I was looking for this ad. I have to tell you, Time for Timer really lost credibility with this one. These NEVER worked out. The Saran wrap always fell off and never held the damn toothpicks. Cute idea though. Guava juice or something with more pulp was generally better because you could wait until it froze or got "thick" and then put the toothpicks in.

  • I've done this before.

  • i made so many popsicles after i saw this. never came out quite right.

  • i used to do this with root beer.

    THANK YOU, TIMER.

  • He was way ahead of the Pomegranite trend.

  • I tried this as a kid using KoolAid. It was a great treat. You had to wrap the tray more than one time with the plastic wrap. There was nothing better than Saturday morning cartoons in the 80's. It was educational and informative.

  • I don't think i've ever been turned on by a flavor of juice!

  • :39 "or whatever turns you on."

so what exactly turns a kid on, you lemon pervert?

  • @ernstergarcia LOL really! I was turned on by whatever mom found cheap enough to buy. He talks like the kids go shopping. LOL I probably would've had tang or koolaide.

Carefully... I love how he draws that word out!!!! There are soooo many child related tooth pick injuries!!!!!! Thank goodness Timer makes sure to warn us!!!!!! LOL

  • @ernstergarcia A lemon party?

  • How in the hell is this in stereo? This was made in the early 70s!

  • They had stereo in the 40's. They called it multi-track or something likt that. It was how Disney's "Fantasia" was recorded.

  • i used to do that

    ;_;

  • woo hoo Timer. I remember this one!

  • im going to have to try the sunshine on a stick:).i like the other one...hunk o' cheese:)

  • This takes me back!

  • I must say that this is pretty good quality, where did you find it???

  • This NEVER worked- such a downer as a kid!

  • This NEVER worked for me!

OMG...so glad to see this-- I was just trying to explain the reference to my son when we were watching Robot Chicken...

I thought maybe it was "powdered lemon juice"... I dunno, LOL

  • Yeah, "or, whatever turns you on," right. Awesome

  • some "Kind of" juice, not real juice mind you

  • good snack idea--but the toothpicks would never stand straight. should probably use tin foil since its stronger.

  • Trust me, double up on the cling wrap and you're good to go! Child of the '70s here, I tried it as soon as I saw it waaaay back when :-) Lost a couple the first time to sagging toothpicks 'til I tried double wrapping the tray.
