Forgot about this until now. This used to be on A LOT. I never knew they mentioned pomegranate juice. I never heard of, or saw, pomegranate anything back in the 80's. Wonder if it was more common in other states than NY? Anyway, I made these and we even had the horrid old silver metal ice trays. I also remember having the white, plastic juice pop molds. Wonder if we got those before or after my attempt at recreating this commercial's recipe. lol
I did this often as a child with orange juice. But everytime I'd try to "Carefully poke the sticks" into the plastic wrap they would move. But they still froze and I would have sunshine on a stick.
I remember the pomegranate suggestion.I also saw this not long after seeing someone with a pomegranate in 4th grade class, when he suggested pomegranate,I immediately thought:Eeeewww, you mean that gross-looking fruit?
I noticed these posts are termed "Vinatge 80's". They are, actually, "Vintage 70's". ABC was still airing them up until about 1984...at the MOST. I think they ram from something like 1975 to early 1980's.
Pretty cool that he refers to pomegranate juice way back then. It was definitely not a known juice for households with children, and U.S. consumers were not widely aware of it until just a few years ago when the POM brand launched and then you saw it everywhere... Also, he shouldn't say frozen juice is a "snack". It's not solid food! This ad never tempted me at all when I was a kid.
@krewgarr I actually did try the orange-juice cubes when I was a kid, but didn't bother with the plastic wrap. They still turned out OK (and delicious) -- the only difference was that the toothpicks weren't perpendicular to the flat face of the cube, but that didn't bother me. But you're right: They're not "snacks." I figured "pomegranate juice" was meant as a joke. Then, when POM came out a few years ago, the first thing I thought was, "Wow, now I can make pomegranate Sunshine on a Stick!"
@krewgarr I knew what a pomegrante was when I was a kid cuz my Dad got us into eating exotic fruits like that, mangos and parsimon (don't know the spelling). He was from south america. But I never had the juice. And today I can't figure out how to find a decent ripe pomegranate. I always break them open too soon cuz the stores put them out before they're ready. And they're too damn expensive to get it wrong!!!!!
@krewgarr I believe you are incorrect. I recall eating pomegranates and drinking pomegranate juice as a child in the mid 70. Pomegranate syrup (Grenadine) was also very popular. They used to be commonly called "Chinese apples" before the Korean War.
@JGCooney Yup. And Hunk and Lotor of 'Voltron', 'Magic Mongo', Filmation's "The New Adventures of Batman", and lots of other stuff. He was as busy as Frank Welker.
Man, as a kid in the 1970s (I was born in 1969) I used to watch this, among the other "Timer" PSAs, on Saturday mornings. Brings back fond, nostalgic memories of me sitting in front of the living room 25 inch color tv (the only tv we had in the house. Unlike today where people practically have a tv in each and every room) watching my favorite Saturday morning cartoons while eating bowl after bowl of my favorite breakfast cereals. The 1970s really was the golden age of saturday morning cartoons.
@TheGreatMozeek I feel for you. We too were poor. Not only could we not afford toothpicks, but we also couldnt afford the plastic wrap, and the orange juice (or the lemonade, or the pomegranate juice, etc)
My problem was that there is nothing worse than a bored kid waiting for ice to freeze! I think half the time I ended up just giving up and drinking it out of the icetray LOL
Ooohh! Thanks a lot 70's vintage commercial, now I'm dying for a refreshing, chilled glass of orange juice. :<
I'm gonna have try this sometime. Man, PSAs back in the 70s and 80s were corny and a bit silly, but damn were they creative at ways of giving kids helpful advice and tips of eating healthy snacks (cheese, orange cubesicle snacks, etc) while still enjoying them. =D
@4thtroika it works well if you add some sugar and a little vanilla to it and turn it into ice milk. Or am I the only one who's mom used to make that? Like a poor mans version of ice cream.
@SerjHasEmerged Okay, I didn't know about that part. He's the one that said to use "whatever turns you on." We used to get ice milk all the time. The lemon flavor was really good.
I was thinking the same thing. I do remember that pomegranates were being sold in the grocery store back then but don't recal the juice. It is very expensive but I would say cranberry would have been more known or welches grape. But I don't remember pomegranate juice in the 70's. I used to make these ice tray popcicles though, with sugar and realmon lemon juice. I remember they were very bitter and very sweet.
I was looking for this ad. I have to tell you, Time for Timer really lost credibility with this one. These NEVER worked out. The Saran wrap always fell off and never held the damn toothpicks. Cute idea though. Guava juice or something with more pulp was generally better because you could wait until it froze or got "thick" and then put the toothpicks in.
I tried this as a kid using KoolAid. It was a great treat. You had to wrap the tray more than one time with the plastic wrap. There was nothing better than Saturday morning cartoons in the 80's. It was educational and informative.
@ernstergarcia LOL really! I was turned on by whatever mom found cheap enough to buy. He talks like the kids go shopping. LOL I probably would've had tang or koolaide.
Carefully... I love how he draws that word out!!!! There are soooo many child related tooth pick injuries!!!!!! Thank goodness Timer makes sure to warn us!!!!!! LOL
Trust me, double up on the cling wrap and you're good to go! Child of the '70s here, I tried it as soon as I saw it waaaay back when :-) Lost a couple the first time to sagging toothpicks 'til I tried double wrapping the tray.
I remember trying this way back when, and it never worked. The toothpicks would always come out of the cubes.

Now just watch as I go through it, really all you need to do it
Is some kind of juice and just a few toothpicks
OK now take an empty ice tray and fill it with Orange juice
Or lemonade Or pomegranate juice or whatever turns you on
Then cover the tray with plastic wrap, carefully poke the toothpicks through the plastic
Put it in the freezer
And in a few hours.
Presto! Stacks of Snacks
Dont wait until it rains to try this nifty trick
Youll have a fun time eating Sunshine on a Stick
bgillund 1 year ago 3
Hi Time for Timer and time to make a weeks supply of healthy afterschool snacks, Now some weekend when its raining and your mother is complaining,
cuz youre hanging round just twiddling your thumbs
Tell your mom that youve been itchin to make something in the kitchen
and oh yes the mess will be a minimum
But the thing thats gointa please her is you make it in the freezer
And nothing could be easier to fix...
