Seriously MGM? I hate to watch his talent wasted. :( Although even with those ridiculous pants on you can tell Buster was a great dancer. I am sure they could've found straight dramatic roles for him and not this nonsense.
From 1:11 to 1:33, I noticed the background music was "We're in the army, the army, the democractic army", etc. Not that anyone would notice back then or even now, but kind of unfitting on MGM's part.
You know, after getting past the stupid dialogue, the song isn't half bad if you don't watch the video. He did have a rather pleasant voice. But that costume, poor Buster... MGM, whatever were you thinking?
A perfect example of why Chaplin refused to work for any of the movie factories and remained independent. This not a Keaton vehicle and he was only given the part because he had a contractual obligation. He's not the star of this movie but only the "comedic relief". Better that he should have quit working than become subservient to L.B. Mayer and his lack of sense of humor.
Thank you jazz1929. The song is fun. Buster is his usual adorable self. Love his dancing and the way he falls into the box at the end. He always puts in charm and the unexpected.
Whatever made MGM think Buster was a "song and dance" man? This was the beginning of the end for him at the studio...as good as this production number was, Keaton was better at pure slapstick than trying to be another "Charles King" {"The Broadway Melody"}.
@mariposa5197: I really agree with you on that one. Although it seems Buster's voice is an acquired taste among some people, I've always loved his gritty, manly baritone. And this scene is probably one of the only few in this movie where he actually looks like he's enjoying himself.

@MizGelsomina58 I entirely agree... Buster was such a talented comedian-He was far better than musical bit-part material.

I love the song "Free and Easy", and Buster is just fine. It's the costume he's wearing that makes no sense.
