  • Who dislikes this stuff? You must be proper retards.

  • A moment of piece man. I'm a man you dont meet every day aswell

  • saddest song i know.

  • Good story!

  • Think ive just found my favourite song :)

  • Love it ,Barney singing this and Fiddlers Green is brilliant, love all the Dubliners each one had a unique talent and together they were magic, could listen to them all day.

  • Listening to the Dubliners it sends chills up my spine. They are a great group. I like Ronnie Drew's raspy voice. I also like Paddy Reilly. Their are quality. No other group will ever come close to the Dubliners.

  • There can be only one like Barney, what passion he sings with.

  • GREAT SONG CANT GET ANT BETTER WHEN I AM AT MY WORST BERNEY CAN SETTLE ME

  • And how true is that.........A one off!!! I remember he was driving once, i was passenger. The police were behind us with the blue lights flashing. it was a winding road and they struggled to get past. After a short while, they gave up and pulled him over. they asked Mick, "why he didn't pull over as they were on an emergency " he replied," it couldn't have been much of an emergency your pulling me over". suffice to say, he got nicked!!

  • Barney isn't the best singer in the world, but that's part of his charm. He sounds like he's just one of us signing a song for his own pleasure. If there happen to be 2000 people there listening to him, the so be it. You can't beat him on the tenor banjo though.. *MAGIC* Fingers!

  • is this an Irish song? about a Scottish man in Ireland?

  • it's not whether he's a good singer or not, because he is, he doesn't sing off key or anything, his Irish brogue just leaks through in his singing...in my opinion it gives his songs more...emotion...

  • I don't care about practiced voice or no, the point is that his voice has in heart in excess, what some may think it does lack in skill. I came not to listen to a machine, I came to hear what's in a heart and can move a heart. Thank you Barney.

  • THE BEST VERSION BY FAR THE POGUSES ARE A CLOSE SECOND!!

  • This man is a gift to us all, may he sing forever!

  • This is his music.

  • great

  • ...none of us are. Thank God! Well done Barney.

  • ...none of us are. Thank God!

  • @nipplebrady1988 sounds like a plan then ,friend.

  • I've seen Barney sing live 9 times He has an honesty about his singing. just love him singing.

  • although I never met him, Barney is like an old friend to me...

  • @frankthetank112244 .........I agree....and now you have an old friend in Toronto, Canada!

  • @MrHudsonIII thanks man, now i have three friends in Toronto haha

  • @frankthetank112244 I feel like that about all the Dubliners

  • @tellemstevedave37 your´e right... but with Barney its like.. kinship

  • My claim to fame: I went to see the Dubliners at the Egypt Cottage in Newcastle upon Tyne - around 96/97. I was working at JGWindows the music store and had gone straight from work. Barney had had a few too many Guinesses before the gig, so during a mandolin duo with John he dropped his plectrum and was hopelessly searching for it while John kept playing. I had a few plectrums in my pocket as always so I ran to the front and handed him one. He started playing again and everyone cheered!

  • The only member of the dubliners i seen live..... in the Naul cultural centre about 15 years. A great musician and a truely unique character of dublin and of ireland

  • Well done Barney!

  • Nice one Barney thanks.

  • bless you Barney

  • Just recently found the Dubliners. I love them all. Barney Where have you been all my life?

  • классная песня, а голос аццкий

  • barney ich will einen bart von dir...

  • I'm a huge fan of the Dubliners, and especially of Barney. Respect, from the United States!

  • Barney is a legend.

  • My friend sings this when she's had a glass or two, and very well too! Never heard it anywhere else until today, great stuff altogether, thanks for posting!

  • This song called " this song called "Jock Stewart?"/"Jock Stuart" a Scottish song from the Tadditioal folk songs and is a well known to folk singers

  • I've been singing this song with my band for two years and have been using the lyric from the Pogues version: "I took out my dog and him I did shoot".

I like this version better and will be doing it this way from now on!

  • He may not be the best singer but he sings this so well. It's so convincing, I could almost say this song is about Barney.

  • you tell 'im ciaran

  • Barney, was singing this song in Amsterdam.

  • brilliant!

  • Isnt this song called "Jock stewart?"

  • no definately man you dont meet every day

  • I don't think I've ever heard him sing?

Does he sing any other Dubliner songs?

  • yes, for example the song "i wish, i had someone to love me" you'll find it here on youtube...

  • Barney does not often sing solo, so it is always something special :-)

Songs he sings solo are a.o. "South Australia", "Fiddlers Green" and "Three Score and Ten".

Just love the old boy, he was always my favorite of the Dubs...

  • i'd like to meet him just the once, that would suit me just fine...classic barney!

  • .....the unique and only old irish proudly man

  • "Tinymoezzy" says it all!!!!

I have a smile on my face and warmth in my heart

    Karlott

  • God this song is hard to listen to without welling up a bit. What a great song

  • Its a rare auld comeallye

  • God bless dear Barney...

  • what can you say? pure class

  • I thought of my Grandfather, Irish American, second generation. He died when I was 5.5 years of age. I was just getting to know him. I cried 'til I couldn't cry anymore as this song reminded me of him. I miss him -- even after all these years. Pup Pup, may the good GOD hold you in the Hollow of His Hands forever.

  • Good Lord, I can remember as a kid my Grandad standing with a pint in his hand singing this song and his sons (my Uncles) joining in on the chorus.

You would get a clip around the ear if you dared to speak while they were singing it.

  • It's my Granddad too. Oh Christ how I miss my Granddad and Gramm ! This song brings a tear to the eye. Lots of tears.

  • A good song, and you were obviously a special Grandson to your Grandad, and he would have been proud of you. My husband lost his Dad in Jan this year and I wish you all the best.

  • Josparkes:

Many thanks for your kind remarks. Mi Pup Pup was the prince of Princes. GOD Bless you, yours, and the UK.

  • That's quite alright, our Grandad was a good man too, Bless you too.

  • anyone know who wrote this song?

  • Found on a Pogues-Website:

"The song is an Irish narrative ballad that has been shortened to an Aberdeenshire drinking song. It is essentially Jeannie Robertson's version, slightly modified by Archie Fisher in the third verse so the dog doesn't get shot. It is alternatively claimed by the Singing Stewarts to have been written for Bell's father."

  • thanks very much boss

  • what a wonderful voice.I'll listen to any story he has to tell.and amaging he's singing it right to me

  • God bless you, mister Barney McKenna! Such a voice! such a character! A lovely ballad, sung by the best!

  • I'm always in tears when Barney stands up at concerts and sings this song and 'I wish I had someone to love me'.

    -d.

  • i tear up about 10 seconds into the song... i heard a cover of this song the other night and not many in the bar knew the song and i felt odd thinking i was the only one with the tears killen my makeup and i look over and there is this poor lady who had her liner all the way to her shirt.... this song is wonderful, and so well done.

  • The pogues do a nice versionof it.

  • they do i will not argue that at all but i just like this version best, person reasons

  • It's the violin, the melody, and the words. Love this song !

  • i know it is like silk when the notes fall into your ears. Perfect and honest and beautiful. Nothing will compare to this song.

  • Right you are !

  • So did Barleycorn.

  • Lovely lovely ballad. ***** ♥ ☻ ♥ ☺ ♥

  • This song's got a very special place in my heart. I'm so glad I stumbled across this version today!! I sang this song for my father on his funeral as his last request. Very fitting to him. 3 cheers for adding it! Fair play!! :-)

  • I had to privilege of hearing barney sing this song live... it was so pretty.

  • my friend barney is not just a great banjo player but a lovely singer too thanks for posting

  • aye - rip ronnie - thanks for the best and all the good times i've had to your music. and thanks barney too - you old fart

  • great to hear Barney, ty for the share Sir

  • I actually think I prefer this to the Pogues' version.

  • That's comparing apples and oranges...

I like both versions, jedes auf seine Weise (can't translate that) ;-)

  • that would be "to each his own" I would think ;-) ;-) and I agree with you...each version has its own unique quality. That's the beauty of folksongs, and musica in general...it's open to interpretation (or so it should be)...that's what keeps music alive.

  • from another man you dont meet everyday .. bye Ronnie hope to see you in Hell, and will bring my guitar and some Romanian songs to complement your perfect show.

  • RIP Ronnie

Thanks for all the Years of Music and all that went with it!

  • so sorry

  • Die beste Version der welt.

  • christ.......i almost cried!!!

  • same here so honest so yes i could cry just well put.

  • i know he sings with it all and it gets you in the heart. I love it.

  • might be slower, but no version can compare with the genuine feelings he delivers.

    Mark.

  • The best version is Cait O'Riordan's. She's got the voice of an angel!

  • I third that notion! But you just have to respect the Dubliners.

  • I love the Dubliners !! As a matter of fact I got a stack of their CDS yesterday and also managed getting a DVD in Southend too !!

They are brilliant, and I am sorry to hear about Ronnie's illness. :(

  • Could someone post that version? Or tell me where to find it?

  • I agree...though even when The Dubs do a tune they shouldn't, it's hard for me to say they murdered it. Love them too much. Send me your email in a YouTube message, and I'll send you The Barleycorn version, if you never heard it.

    Simply awesome.

  • Great stuff from barney. Would have loved to have Luke try this one. He would have sung his head off.

  • Always thought it was a better song for Drew to do. A little faster than this, too. Then you have Kelly hit high harmony on the chorus.

Best version of this song is done by The Barlycorn. I have it on a CD, but good luck finding it anywhere.

Send me an e-mail, if you want to hear this song done the way it should, and I'll send you the tune.

    Dennis

  • love to hear it, dave

  • beutiful barney, proud to have you as a friend of the family down in church gardens

  • nice one

  • Wonderful
