Love it ,Barney singing this and Fiddlers Green is brilliant, love all the Dubliners each one had a unique talent and together they were magic, could listen to them all day.
Listening to the Dubliners it sends chills up my spine. They are a great group. I like Ronnie Drew's raspy voice. I also like Paddy Reilly. Their are quality. No other group will ever come close to the Dubliners.
And how true is that.........A one off!!! I remember he was driving once, i was passenger. The police were behind us with the blue lights flashing. it was a winding road and they struggled to get past. After a short while, they gave up and pulled him over. they asked Mick, "why he didn't pull over as they were on an emergency " he replied," it couldn't have been much of an emergency your pulling me over". suffice to say, he got nicked!!
Barney isn't the best singer in the world, but that's part of his charm. He sounds like he's just one of us signing a song for his own pleasure. If there happen to be 2000 people there listening to him, the so be it. You can't beat him on the tenor banjo though.. *MAGIC* Fingers!
it's not whether he's a good singer or not, because he is, he doesn't sing off key or anything, his Irish brogue just leaks through in his singing...in my opinion it gives his songs more...emotion...
I don't care about practiced voice or no, the point is that his voice has in heart in excess, what some may think it does lack in skill. I came not to listen to a machine, I came to hear what's in a heart and can move a heart. Thank you Barney.
My claim to fame: I went to see the Dubliners at the Egypt Cottage in Newcastle upon Tyne - around 96/97. I was working at JGWindows the music store and had gone straight from work. Barney had had a few too many Guinesses before the gig, so during a mandolin duo with John he dropped his plectrum and was hopelessly searching for it while John kept playing. I had a few plectrums in my pocket as always so I ran to the front and handed him one. He started playing again and everyone cheered!
The only member of the dubliners i seen live..... in the Naul cultural centre about 15 years. A great musician and a truely unique character of dublin and of ireland
My friend sings this when she's had a glass or two, and very well too! Never heard it anywhere else until today, great stuff altogether, thanks for posting!
I thought of my Grandfather, Irish American, second generation. He died when I was 5.5 years of age. I was just getting to know him. I cried 'til I couldn't cry anymore as this song reminded me of him. I miss him -- even after all these years. Pup Pup, may the good GOD hold you in the Hollow of His Hands forever.
A good song, and you were obviously a special Grandson to your Grandad, and he would have been proud of you. My husband lost his Dad in Jan this year and I wish you all the best.
"The song is an Irish narrative ballad that has been shortened to an Aberdeenshire drinking song. It is essentially Jeannie Robertson's version, slightly modified by Archie Fisher in the third verse so the dog doesn't get shot. It is alternatively claimed by the Singing Stewarts to have been written for Bell's father."
i tear up about 10 seconds into the song... i heard a cover of this song the other night and not many in the bar knew the song and i felt odd thinking i was the only one with the tears killen my makeup and i look over and there is this poor lady who had her liner all the way to her shirt.... this song is wonderful, and so well done.
This song's got a very special place in my heart. I'm so glad I stumbled across this version today!! I sang this song for my father on his funeral as his last request. Very fitting to him. 3 cheers for adding it! Fair play!! :-)
that would be "to each his own" I would think ;-) ;-) and I agree with you...each version has its own unique quality. That's the beauty of folksongs, and musica in general...it's open to interpretation (or so it should be)...that's what keeps music alive.
from another man you dont meet everyday .. bye Ronnie hope to see you in Hell, and will bring my guitar and some Romanian songs to complement your perfect show.
I agree...though even when The Dubs do a tune they shouldn't, it's hard for me to say they murdered it. Love them too much. Send me your email in a YouTube message, and I'll send you The Barleycorn version, if you never heard it.

Good Lord, I can remember as a kid my Grandad standing with a pint in his hand singing this song and his sons (my Uncles) joining in on the chorus.
You would get a clip around the ear if you dared to speak while they were singing it.

Great stuff from barney. Would have loved to have Luke try this one. He would have sung his head off.

Always thought it was a better song for Drew to do. A little faster than this, too. Then you have Kelly hit high harmony on the chorus.
Best version of this song is done by The Barlycorn. I have it on a CD, but good luck finding it anywhere.
Send me an e-mail, if you want to hear this song done the way it should, and I'll send you the tune.
