They were awarded the Sudler Trophy in 1984.
"The purpose of the Sudler Trophy is to identify and recognize collegiate marching bands of particular excellence that have made outstanding contributions to the American way of life. The Sudler Trophy will be awarded biannually to a college or university marching band which has demonstrated the highest of musical standards and innovative marching routines and ideas."
The first Sudler Trophy was awarded in 1982 to -- the Michigan Marching Band !!

@docachna Just a point of information, the Sudler trophy was decided by popular vote for the first two bands, Michigan and University of Illinois. However, the first band to win the trophy under the new system was Ohio State. The new system consists of a committee of highly respected people who vote based on the recommendations by college band directors throughout the nation.

i went to a skull sessions just a few months ago(:
and with my director being an alumini, we got to see the field and everything else!
we were sitting right infront of the drums when they came out!
i was so fun!

Thats a cool perspective--are you in the IU band??? If so you guys sounded really good and were a lot of fun at skull session (but one of the redsteppers almost kicked me lol). Thanks for making the trip to Columbus =)
