Hey guys. I have played many strats from American standards to am deluxes to reissued/artist influenced. I have also played a squire classic vibe 60's. Today, I got a Mexican Strat and it is one of the best guitars I have ever played, with the squire behind it. That's great that people are patriotic, but expensive or cheap, the better instrument is the better sounding one :)
@FreshMuffinz -"That's great that people are patriotic, but expensive or cheap, the better instrument is the better sounding one"Thats a subjective point you are making there. For many players feel is primary driver of which guitar to get; how it feels in your hands when you play.Tone and amps can be dialed up to suit but the thickness of a neck or the feel of a guitar is what it is and if it doesn't feel natural or play comfortably then the sound won't matter much in the end. Just my two cents.

First off, I like your videos keep it up. It's hard to compare any two guitars. I have a Mexican strat and it plays more comfortably than any strat I've played before, the tone is good too, although I'de like to play with different pickups for shits n giggles. Also I have an Epiphone Les Paul also and have been told by multiple guitar technicians that it's as good if not better than any Gibson out there. It just goes to show you that no two guitars are the same, just like the wood from the tree

Cheers for the video, i play an American Standard Tele, n I'm looking to buy a strat, i seen a mexican one with a single coil on the neck, and middle, and two single coils on the bridge. Would you know if this guitar is much different to the standard 3 single coils, or better or worse or....
I own both american and Mexican strats. American are better build quality and most have better finishes.. But with that being said.. I love my mexican strats.. Best value for the money. IF your buying to collect buy american. IF your trying to get the best bang for the buck.. Get mexican.Think of it this way.. Your either getting a guitar built in mexico by mexicans are a Guitar built in corona california by mexicans.. Either way.. A mexican built your guitar.
The American pickups are hotter and the woods are of a higher grade. Of the 6 Stratocasters I've owned, 4 American and 2 Mexican, that's the main difference I've found. The tuners are sometimes weak on both models, depending on the production year. American strats are worth more of course when you want to sell or trade, but a Mexican strat, in terms of playability, sound, look and value is worth DOUBLE what you can get one for. See for yourself.
Even if your guitar is inferior to your friend's American-made guitar, it does not affect what you can do with your hands and what you know in your head music wise. There's a difference between a good guitar and a good guitar player.
I have a mexican left handed strat its really great i've had it over eight years very durable high end pickups very strong I have a leftry sx rondo music strat thats very good not as strong sounding as my mexican strat but pretty up there for the price some of these players check out rondo music there strats are darn good for third of the price of a mexican well made you guys even yourself will be surprised of the prices thanks for your thoughts you explained eveything very well.
what an awesome video..... It really helped me out to choose a fender blacktop that I was afraid of not being a great guitar just because it is mex made. Good work dude! Thanks for the video again :)
@thalescamilo As a guitar player of over 30 years, I have one rule that I tell all my students; Pick up the guitar and play it for yourself. Let that be your main guide for what to purchase. You may be able to brag that you have this or that guitar but as time passes you will be asked this question. Why do you play this guitar more than your 3000 dollar Rhandy Rhodes? you will say because it sounds/plays better. I hope that this helps you decide in the future.
@MrJimmiClapton If John Mayer is the first person you think of in your list of influences, take one look at his signature model. Rosewood fretboard - there's your answer. (Mine too.)
I love my Mexican. I played it in the shop i bought it from having just played an American one [I didn't even know there was a difference until the clerk told me] and for whatever reason I preferred it. The guy in the shop told me that the Americans use the same gloss lacquer on the neck at they do on the body, but the Mexicans use a matte finish. I think that's what made the difference to me. BUt both are excellent instruments.
Look I appreciated your efford but it,s very hard to compare between maple and rosewood necks. It would be far more interesting if you could find a american with maple neck. Thanks anyway.
the mexican strat isn't a bad guitar however the american model blows it away I have played both and there seems to be a difference between the two necks. Any way i would recomend just saving for an american strat, some can be found for as little as $800. Also the pickups, wood and neck are different on the american and the mexican models the american is better and i would choose i ove rthe MIM anyday regardless of the price
i am thinking of buying a mex strat or a highway one strat, the mex has a maple neck and the highway one has a rosewood, i know most people would say buy the highway one because its usa made and better, but i am not sure about the differences between maple neck and a rosewood one, is one faster playing than the other, i prefer the look of the maple one, but if the rosewood makes the same sound then i will be happy with that, can anyone advise me please??!!
Nice Video. This MIM strat has such a sweet sound... like angels whispering into your ear. I had a Japanese Squier Bullet which played fantastic but lousy pickups. Gave it to my brother in law who traded it for a case of beer. Good call.
I love MIA and MIM strats and own a 97 pro tone fat strat and a 94 cv MIK Squier. They're surprising good.
Yeah maybe for the Strats...but do not waste your money on a Fender Bass. Buy the American Bass. I have the mex bass, and it's flimsy and has feed back and a crappy stock bridge. I have played the mex teles and strats and like them. I got a 95 american strat I have owned since new, also a us tele. And I like the mexi 6 strings, thinking about getting one.
What a great comparision. There is a small bit more warmth in the end of the notes on the American model. I'm not sure why, it could be the trem block, the pickups, the wood, but it's just a tad bit sweeter. Not a lot of difference though.
excellent comparison... the mexican made strats are indeed great guitars. They might not feature the ABSOLUTE FINEST woods and components like an American, but they're still made of good stuff, built well and built to last. And, as you've shown, they sound great too. Plus you can upgrade the pickups and whatever else you want, and still spend less than an american series!
i have both an american and mim strat too. i just put some tex special pickups in the mexican one and i can say it sounds beautiful. i have not changed the pickups or anything in the american, and the mexican one almost sounds better if not better. great pickups, great guitars, no complaints.
The American clearly has better pubs. Much richer tone and more output - maybe 25% more from the video although tis hard to tell over youtube etc. Nothing you can't fix by upgrading the stock pubs in the MIM tbh. Certainly not 1k difference!
i have a mexican strat only and its great, feels great and plays very nicely. I agree with others, be thankful for them, and be glad there is a real alternative to the squier. If it places a more authentic strat into more hands that can only be a good thing.
I'm almost 60, and bought my first "real" guitar in 1969. It was a well-used Telecaster, sunburst finish, probably dating back to 1958 (no, we didn't keep track of "what year is it" in those days). I paid $75 for it. That's no tall tale... a new one then cost $175.00. Even a Rolex AirKing sold for less than that back then too.
A year after buying the Tele I was drafted. I came home on leave 9-months later and the guitar was gone. 30-years later my brother fessed up to having pawned it.
I have 2 American Standards (Tele and a Strat), one Mexican Standard Strat, and several Squiers. The Squiers, like all Asian builds (except Japan) are low grade. The Asian stuff Fender sells isn't even set up well enough to play off-the-shelf.
I see no difference (except price) in the American and Mexican Standards, in either build quality or sound. Same hardware, and same attention to detail in construction and material. Anyone who tells you different doesn't know.
@mnpd007 Sorry you're wrong, I've had both and the American is DEFINITELY better. The rolled fingerboard edges, the electronics, the pick ups. I had an MIM strat, plugged it into my amp and couldn't even play due to the high amount of hum the horrible pick ups produces. I bought an American strat, plugged it into the same amp in the same room and I couldn't even tell that the guitar was humming, I had to actively try to hear the hum.
I bought a Squire Strat for my son years ago, I can wail on it but it still is a crappy low budget guitar that has trouble staying in tune if you push it too far. Comparing a Vintage 62 American Strat to a Mexican strat is like comparing the 27 Yankees to the 62 Mets. The Mexican Strats are good for a budget just check the resale value. It has none.
Hey man I don't want to come off the wrong way - I think you're great and I enjoyed the video- but I just wanted to correct you on something. That 60th anniversary has Tex-Mex pups in it, like those found on the Jimmi Vaughan signature strat, which are actually really high quality pickups and wayyy better than stock mexican strat ones. Also, the craftsmanship that went into the 60th anniversary MIM strat was of a lot higher quality compared to standards because they are a collector's item.
i used to own a black and white squier strat that i got from a pawn shop its ok but i sold it for $100 because i got it for $150 i sold it because a found a 60th anneversery custom shop carona strat at the same pawn shop and i had it half paid off and the guy at the pawn shop is good friends with me and my dad and he gave it to me for xmas today and i have always wanted one and i didnt know anything about it when i saw it today it brought me to tears i love it and ur a great guitarist and person

Great review/comparison. I just ordered this guitar (used) and should be getting it anytime soon. Just wanted to point out that the Fender 60th Anniversary Strat MIM comes with TexMex pickups which are not the standard pick-ups that come with all MIMs. Still, having owned a previous Strat with stock pick-ups, MIM Strats are excellent for their value. Beats having to get a Squire/Yamaha/Cort or any other budget guitar.
hey i just bought a mexican strat. love it. but one problem. the tone knob does not work for the bridge pick up. is this right? i read that it is but just need to confirm here :)
@guttersnipephil it depends, mine does the same. I brought it to like a music store and the dude said its wired like a vintage strat sumthing like that
For me, the American got more tone, articulation, and volume, not by much, but it's still clear, but change the Mexican pickups, and better electronics perhaps, and you will rival the American, the Mexican is still a great intermediate guitar, and it won't upset you once you improve your skill after pickup swap :)
@iDuffdabestweed they sell it for $1099 and guitar center but i got mine differently. center is good too but they wanted to give me the guitar right off the wall and i didn't want that.
Maybe it's just me, but I hear a HUGE difference between the two guitars. The Mexican sounds nice; and it would do the trick if your're on a budget. The American is a lot louder, with more clarity and articulation.
I've currently got a squier, and am saving for a real fender. Thanks heaps for this video, I'm glad there are genuinely helpful people out there like you.
Two points I'm led to make: you joked about the Mex being outta tune--isn't that more common with a Mex ? Also, I do hear a buzzier, thinner sound on the lower strings of the Mex, don't you think ?
@jonaggod its all in how the guitar is set up. you know the plate on back? take it off and screw the springs down a bit, de-tune first thou so you won't tamper the tension too much, that should hold your strings a little better
ive been looking for a video where someone explains the mexican strats and mexican made guitars lol thank you and yes very much more afordable guitars lol
The reason why people Don't like mexican over the American is cuz people don't like having to say "mine ain't american." I don't care if it's american or Mexican. The people should just be thankful they ain't a Squier.
@Ryokan01 there are differences tho for example a mexican strat cant have an american bridge on it without body work and the pickups arent always as good
@MrTheCircle Oh of course but you do realize that the pickup problem can be fixed by buying the pickups yourself and getting them burned onto the pots, (I do not recommend do this yourself if you don't know what you're doing though,) and as for the bridge problem that can also be done by buying the part yourself, and you would save all the money. and I'm not saying it makes it better, but it gives it the feel of the american. except for the fret sizes.
@Ryokan01 correct u are and the frets ur pretty much stuck with unless u buy an american made because it would be to much work to put an american neck on a mexican fender due to the different line up on the neck bolts
@MrTheCircle I don't really think there would be a point in that cuz that would mean you would have to buy an american anyway cuz I don't think you can just go out to a guitar center or samash and say "One neck Please. Yeah, just the neck. I know it would be easier to buy the guitar, but i wanna put a neck on a mexican." and trust me, that just sounds crazy.
@Ryokan01 yea but if ur like me and ur grandfather plays u have an old 60's american strat sitting around his house that is trashed but has a good neck so yea i have a neck i just would rather get the 60's american made fixed
@MrTheCircle Oh of course I would rather get the american fixed any day rather than rip it apart especially if it's vintage. What Finish is does it have?
@Ryokan01 i might be mistaken because the neck is in climate control storage but i believe it is rosewood...he has the body in his shop working on restoring it and the neck is in storage like i said
@Ryokan01 i dont think that, i think people want the american because is more expencive, if the mexican would be more expencive, the people wanted the mexicans
@Ryokan01 hey but there are good Squiers out there on the market also. think about it like this, its not like the Mexican Strat was made up by them/there, Fender gave them the parts, all made from Fender, and got cheaper labor to make them along with permission to make and use Fender parts, so in essence, it still a Fender. check my video out that is a Squier series, but an expensive one though. it almost like when Pearl made drum shells for other co.; they put there name on it and sold it;
@Ryokan01 i respect your opinion of course. but the squire guitars are extremely good. they are half the price but far from half the quality. for instance a top end squire is far better made than the mexican standards by fender. they just dont compair, the squires are much much better in my opinion. well worth getting one
@kona6495 Well hello there. I suppose I should explain what I meant when I said squier, Which was the Composite wood cheap affinity series or bullet series. I've owned both, neither compare to a mexican strat which is made of real wood. I'm not talking about The Jagmaster or Duo Sonics, or even the classic vibe ones which I admit do sound quite impressive. I'm sorry that I didn't make that more clear.
@Ryokan01 ahh i see. i do have one affinity telecaster which is great for the price, but something like the squire deluxe and classic vibes are more than great for the price where as i feel a mexican is good, but easily improved.
@Ryokan01 squires are good if you know what your doing =P though they are not as good as a mim or mia. the mia has a lot better pickups and electronics, if you have the money you should get american
I agree ... but we for sure get the point. That said, I have a great mix of Korean, Mexican, Japan and US guitars. My Fender Deluxe strat is by far my favourite ... and not because of price ... because it plays like a dream and FEELS outstanding. Almost like I am not playing.
Tone is important ... BUT ..... so is feel in the hands of the player. Some guitars really do TALK to you !!
@MikeyGee001 how can something feel good to play if it feels like your not playing? i personally like the feeling of playing haha jk i get what your saying
thank you been wanting to buy a strat for a while and of course I would like an american ,but with a family its pretty tough to shell out 1500 bucks considering you could get basicly the exact same thing for 500.
I have been trying to decide which one i want and this review was perfect for me as I was playing lenny on my current les paul body esp guitar just before i saw this. I think i will buy the mexican one
the one with the maple fretboard is going to sound more bright and have a different response then the one with the rosewood fretboard even in they had the same pickups. wood and how well they are made make a bit of a tone difference.
@thebestfailure I dont know about that. I consider myself a Fender guy and have owned quite a few over the years. Just bought my first Gibson and I gotta say, as far as quality of craftmanship goes, Its every bit as good as any Fender I've ever played.
Sound and looks??? Apples and oranges there. They are both great, just different.
I've had two MIM Strats. Both 95 models. One was an HSS strat and Is prolly the worst guitar I have ever owned. Bridge PuP died and then volume pot died and it would never go into or stay in tune. Horrible guitar.
The one I have now, I paid $150 used. It is AWSOME. Prolly needs better pickups but has the best action of almost any guitar I have ever played (only my Les Paul beats it) and I havnt had to tune it in 3 weeks. So just try B4 you buy. Some are AWFUL and some are AWSOME.

I have a mexican left handed strat its really great i've had it over eight years very durable high end pickups very strong I have a leftry sx rondo music strat thats very good not as strong sounding as my mexican strat but pretty up there for the price some of these players check out rondo music there strats are darn good for third of the price of a mexican well made you guys even yourself will be surprised of the prices thanks for your thoughts you explained eveything very well.

thalescamilo 6 months ago

BUt both are excellent instruments.
mcfreddiep 10 months ago
@mcfreddiep i swear americans use matte, not mexicans? oh well , im getting a mexican tomorrow :)

Look I appreciated your efford but it,s very hard to compare between maple and rosewood necks. It would be far more interesting if you could find a american with maple neck. Thanks anyway.

Is the mexican strat worth buying over other similar priced guitars? Or are there better guitars for the price of around the mexican strat's price?
Zinkon997 11 months ago
the mexican strat isn't a bad guitar however the american model blows it away I have played both and there seems to be a difference between the two necks.

They're surprising good.
maripocita37 1 year ago
Yeah maybe for the Strats...but do not waste your money on a Fender Bass. Buy the American Bass. I have the mex bass, and it's flimsy and has feed back and a crappy stock bridge. I have played the mex teles and strats and like them. I got a 95 american strat I have owned since new, also a us tele. And I like the mexi 6 strings, thinking about getting one.
Guppy915 1 year ago
What a great comparision. There is a small bit more warmth in the end of the notes on the American model. I'm not sure why, it could be the trem block, the pickups, the wood, but it's just a tad bit sweeter. Not a lot of difference though.
markjamesmason 1 year ago
excellent comparison... the mexican made strats are indeed great guitars. They might not feature the ABSOLUTE FINEST woods and components like an American, but they're still made of good stuff, built well and built to last. And, as you've shown, they sound great too. Plus you can upgrade the pickups and whatever else you want, and still spend less than an american series!
andy474x 1 year ago
i have both an american and mim strat too. i just put some tex special pickups in the mexican one and i can say it sounds beautiful. i have not changed the pickups or anything in the american, and the mexican one almost sounds better if not better. great pickups, great guitars, no complaints.

You cant compare a rosewood neck guitar with a Maple one.
That made a big différence.
The rosewood gave a warmer round sound.
The Maple give a clearer And more" tac" sound.
Anyway Nice try!
snakymen13 1 year ago
The American clearly has better pubs. Much richer tone and more output - maybe 25% more from the video although tis hard to tell over youtube etc. Nothing you can't fix by upgrading the stock pubs in the MIM tbh. Certainly not 1k difference!

30-years later my brother fessed up to having pawned it.
mnpd007 1 year ago
I have 2 American Standards (Tele and a Strat), one Mexican Standard Strat, and several Squiers. The Squiers, like all Asian builds (except Japan) are low grade. The Asian stuff Fender sells isn't even set up well enough to play off-the-shelf.
I see no difference (except price) in the American and Mexican Standards, in either build quality or sound. Same hardware, and same attention to detail in construction and material. Anyone who tells you different doesn't know.
mnpd007 1 year ago
@mnpd007 Sorry you're wrong, I've had both and the American is DEFINITELY better. The rolled fingerboard edges, the electronics, the pick ups. I had an MIM strat, plugged it into my amp and couldn't even play due to the high amount of hum the horrible pick ups produces. I bought an American strat, plugged it into the same amp in the same room and I couldn't even tell that the guitar was humming, I had to actively try to hear the hum.

@Herreken In Austria/Germany/swiss there is a 700 Dollar difference. And in most of american shops it's 500.

For me, the American got more tone, articulation, and volume, not by much, but it's still clear, but change the Mexican pickups, and better electronics perhaps, and you will rival the American, the Mexican is still a great intermediate guitar, and it won't upset you once you improve your skill after pickup swap :)

jonaggod 1 year ago
@jonaggod its all in how the guitar is set up. you know the plate on back? take it off and screw the springs down a bit, de-tune first thou so you won't tamper the tension too much, that should hold your strings a little better

The reason why people Don't like mexican over the American is cuz people don't like having to say "mine ain't american." I don't care if it's american or Mexican. The people should just be thankful they ain't a Squier.
Ryokan01 1 year ago 58
@Ryokan01 there are differences tho for example a mexican strat cant have an american bridge on it without body work and the pickups arent always as good
MrTheCircle 1 year ago
@MrTheCircle Oh of course but you do realize that the pickup problem can be fixed by buying the pickups yourself and getting them burned onto the pots, (I do not recommend do this yourself if you don't know what you're doing though,) and as for the bridge problem that can also be done by buying the part yourself, and you would save all the money. and I'm not saying it makes it better, but it gives it the feel of the american. except for the fret sizes.
Ryokan01 1 year ago
@Ryokan01 correct u are and the frets ur pretty much stuck with unless u buy an american made because it would be to much work to put an american neck on a mexican fender due to the different line up on the neck bolts
MrTheCircle 1 year ago
@MrTheCircle I don't really think there would be a point in that cuz that would mean you would have to buy an american anyway cuz I don't think you can just go out to a guitar center or samash and say "One neck Please. Yeah, just the neck. I know it would be easier to buy the guitar, but i wanna put a neck on a mexican." and trust me, that just sounds crazy.
Ryokan01 1 year ago
@Ryokan01 yea but if ur like me and ur grandfather plays u have an old 60's american strat sitting around his house that is trashed but has a good neck so yea i have a neck i just would rather get the 60's american made fixed

studkick 1 year ago
@Ryokan01 hey but there are good Squiers out there on the market also. think about it like this, its not like the Mexican Strat was made up by them/there, Fender gave them the parts, all made from Fender, and got cheaper labor to make them along with permission to make and use Fender parts, so in essence, it still a Fender. check my video out that is a Squier series, but an expensive one though. it almost like when Pearl made drum shells for other co.; they put there name on it and sold it;

Broyale26 1 year ago
@Ryokan01 i respect your opinion of course. but the squire guitars are extremely good. they are half the price but far from half the quality. for instance a top end squire is far better made than the mexican standards by fender. they just dont compair, the squires are much much better in my opinion. well worth getting one
kona6495 1 year ago
@kona6495 Well hello there. I suppose I should explain what I meant when I said squier, Which was the Composite wood cheap affinity series or bullet series. I've owned both, neither compare to a mexican strat which is made of real wood. I'm not talking about The Jagmaster or Duo Sonics, or even the classic vibe ones which I admit do sound quite impressive. I'm sorry that I didn't make that more clear.
Ryokan01 1 year ago
@Ryokan01 ahh i see. i do have one affinity telecaster which is great for the price, but something like the squire deluxe and classic vibes are more than great for the price where as i feel a mexican is good, but easily improved.

I agree ... but we for sure get the point.
