Bob Geldof actually looked kinda handsome back then. *fluffs his puffy brown hair* Very dramatic performer too- I wouldn't have guessed it! However, it makes my voice hurt listening to him sing- take it easy!
What an amazing array of talent on one stage!! Can only pick out 2 deceased (Big Country lead singer and the legendary Freddie Mercury) Not bad for a video that's 26 years old. Thanks for posting!
Awesome song. I readed one thing about the song. It was inspired in a phrase of Brenda Ann Spencer, 'cause when the police asked why did she shot to the childrens, she answered "I don't know why, I supose I don't like mondays". A sinister story for an awesome song.
This song has nothing to do with people dying in Africa in 1985. It was written about a comment that Brenda Ann Spencer made to police when they asked her why she shot 30 rounds of gunfire across the street at an elementary school and killed 2 people and injured many more. Her answer "I don't like Monday's." You can look it up on Wikipedia.
@kirkwood512 but the genius of it, is how the lyrics can be reappropriated to the topical cause. kinda the tarantino effect. a song changes under context.
People were giving millions of pounds during his performance the most money during an act , they were giving money by the bucket load begging for him to stop singing .
Bob Geldof said in his autobiography that he made the pause after ''and the lesson today is how to die''because he wanted everyone to feel what the day was about. They sure did after that.He is a living example of how the indivual human being can make a difference when they put their minds to it.Before Live-Aid I was not even aware of charities in Africa and what they did.Now I work for Oxfam.
I spent the whole day indoors watching Live Aid on the 13th August 1985 and it was a bloody hot day but it was probably the best day of me life Clive X.
A day I'll always remember. I don't know how the weather was in London but it was 95 broiling degrees at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. David Bowie and Mick Jagger were going to try to do a cross-Atlantic duet of Dancing in the Streets but they couldn't work out the delay. Still, Mick out on one of his best shows with Tina Turner. Led Zeppelin, CSNY, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins on the Concorde, Hall & Oats teaming up with the Temptations and many more. Yes, it was some day.
Boom Town Rats where great, still disappointed with Geldolf for taking the credit for Live Aid when Midge Ure played a huge part in it. Its a shame Midge never got the credit he deserved. Queen and Ultravox for me was the best at Live Aid that day.
Just for the sake of Marketing: Boomtown are back (well without Bob, but anyway). And they are visiting Germany: 14th of November in Frankfurt @ Landungsbrücken Frankfurt.
Bob....I think the world needs your energy once more....so if you have a little time on your hands.....well, you know....just a little project ?!?! :D Need a hand and I'm in ! xxx
does anyone know the story behind this song.......it's very sad. A girl went on a shooting spree on a Monday out her window and shot into a school yard........
@VCorb0328 I went to that school (in San Diego). The principal and custodian were killed and a kid I walked to school with got shot. Luckily I was sick that day. Terrible day - can't hear this song and not get a little sad.
The pause after Geldof sings "And the lesson today is how to die" is so powerful because at the time thousands of people in Africa were learning how to die by actually dying.
When I watched Live Aid on TV at the age of 11 I had never heard the song before and had no idea what the lyrics were originally about, but I felt the power of that moment and I cried. I later learned the story behind the song and appreciated it even more. I bought it and played it to death. When I got the long-awaited DVD and watched that again, I cried again. Not many things can do that to me. One of the most emotionally intense performances of any song ever. I wish I'd been there.
