  • HELP..! Im on max 2010, when i run max script i.e. boujou solved camera in .ms format for 3d studio max., im getting "syntax error.....Max script FileIn exception...In line file name...(name of original footage)", WHAT DO I DO...?

  • @reaperkaran i think i had this same problem, open up the max script file you exported (.ms) and look for the line that says filename = "FILELOCATION\FILENAME.avi" and if it has a ) at the end of it delete that bracket and save and then re-run the script.

  • @reaperkaran what snahfu said and here it is, watch this vid @ 4.22 /watch?list=UU1MD-nXR_zoEcp5m1u-h8BQ&NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=_DAd2R1h8VY&fb_source=message

Never had this error, but i hope that this is what you mean ;-)

  • For all the people have the numframes error, there are 2 things you can do.

    1. click on the *script*.ms file, edit it, find b.numframes = xxx setAsBackground b

    >delete those

    2. movies background 3ds can imports are only in .ais format!!!

Thumbs up so everyone can see!!!

    hope this helped :)

  • when i choose the matte shadow thing and render the image, i see the plane whole black.

So it casts no shadows, how do i resolve this?

  • Great tutorials! thank you.

  • do you play Battlefield 2?

  • @usmceflips lol.

no I don't why do you ask?

  • @usmceflips What a Fucking wierd question ;D

  • @usmceflips Ur Random

  • Help !! I'm on 3ds max 2010 and i can't find " show background "

  • @cocoCOD4 .. Press alt+B in your viewport.

  • i mean when i click render it only renders the selected frame and not the whole animation. will .avi have alpha channel?

  • @StupidVids2009 click F10, there you can select a single frame to be rendered, the active timeline or a specific range. It's the first pull out panel. I would prefer a .tga image sequence or a .jpg. yes, that takes some more HDD space but got a better quality.

  • @StupidVids2009 No .avi don't support alpha channel. Use .mov

  • ok its working. thanks! but i have another quick problem. (sry) mine isnt in a sequence u know how to fix that?

  • @StupidVids2009 what do you mean by "isn't a sequence"? You can convert a .avi to .jpg_#### sequence..

  • ok thx but now to view camera 1 i have to press F10 and click activeshade. is there any way to just be able to press F9 and view it every time??

  • @StupidVids2009 ye. Select the viewport you want to render as active viewport by simply clicking in it.

  • @vfxworld is there any other way, becuase that didnt work. btw u know how u have 2 bars at the top when u click F9? (where u had to click when u had the same problem as me, wrong viewport) i dont have that. how do i enable it to see it??

  • @StupidVids2009 in your render menu (F10) you can set the viewport being rendered. If there is typed "front" choose the dropdown to "Camera01" or so.

  • My 3DS MAX unexpectedly shuts down when I run a script... What do I do?? I have Intel Core i5 650 Processor, Nvidia GT 220 1024MB Video card, 8GB DDR3 RAM and Windows 7 64 Bit. Please help if you can!

  • Hey, very good tutorial but i have a problem :( when i import the script and try to show the background, isn't the background animated :( it is just a picture but not animated. sry for bad english ^^

  • @gtaeXtremgamers Simply go to the bg settings (alt+b) and select your bg animation video again.

  • Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Could yo help me? I tried to follow these steps on Maya, everything went ok, automatic tracking, exporting. but when I open in maya and play the movie... only the track points will follow along the camera ("'The Movie will not play") , so when I render.. only the object I place moved but the background movie stays still. I obviously missing something, could you or anybody help please.. thanks

  • well, the best thing to do is of course exporting with alpha channel and compositing in After Effects.

If you want to do it your way, check the background settings. If you have an image sequence, you might have to tell maya that it's a video, not a photo.

  • Thanks, I will try on Toxik to compose it. I'm very new so I'll see how it goes :P.

  • hello again, could you help me finding the background settings to tell maya its a video (image sequence). Thanks

  • I don't use maya.

but every program got a help document..

  • I also get the numframe error, pliz help me :)

  • just delete the background information in the maxscript. you can open the script in 3ds max on max script->open

Than delete the numframe line and maybe some other bg informations if needed.

In order to get your background back on screen, select your viewport and press alt+b, than setup your new bg information (fit bitmap)

  • thanks a lot..!!!...your tutorial is very understandable...

  • Du solltest mal deutsche tutorials darüber machen .. ( nicht das ich kein englisch kann xD )

  • man thanks for that tutorials

  • hey again, thanks for these tutorials. for some reason I am getting a "num frames" undefined error. ever heard of this?

  • ye.

That's a background data error in the max script.

If you want to, send me a mail than I explain to you how to get it work.

  • And how to do this all when i got more than 1 camera solve camera's ? How to add the Scene Geometry at that moment to all the camera solves ?

Only know this all if i got small video for 1 camera solve.

  • 2 solves means you got a bad track. or a cutted scene.

What you have to do is to adjust the tracking parameters and add target tracks. You can't setup scene geometry for 2 solves at the same time. You could export the first solve, than set up for the second solve and export again.

  • How to adjust the tracking parameters?

  • watch part 1.

In the trackingpanel, click on more settings..

  • Thanks, it worked :)

  • It works all perfect. When i add a box in 3D Studio Max 2010 into the scene it tracks really good.

But when i import a object and place it into the tracked scene after rendered the object slides slowly on the floor away from the scene.. But the track works good with objects that you can create inside 3ds max. Only imported objects dont work

    Someone can help me?

  • trackingproblem.

    Scene geometry problem...

    Maybe you animated the object?

I understand right, you imported into 3ds max, rendered a testsequence with a box and everything works?

Well, than you should have no problems with another object. Be sure to have perfect scene geometry, than create a groundplane and place your object carefully (use align to minimum maybe..)

  • You mean to create a groundplane in Boujou or in Max ? And how to create a perfect Scene Geometry?

  • in 3ds max.

Well, you first filter the structure to just get the best points in. Than you select all points (or many) on the ground and creat a x-y plane. Boujou will use the avarage value of all those points.

  • That's what i always did... Creating the geometry and it works perfect with boxes inside 3dsmax.

Only imported objects are not tracking well, and that's with EVERY imported object. And do i only need to create the Grounplane and import on there my object? Or doing anything else?

  • Well, interesting problem... It does not matter what object you put in, since just the camera is animated.

Be sure not to move the camera (could happen if you don't change to perspective when exploring the scene). Align the model to a groundplane (at minimum).

It just couldn't be that the imported object is sliding while a box does not. That's against the algorythm (at least in 2009 version...).

  • Thanks! That align option did the trick :-)

  • good ^^

  • Shut up Fridjof ^^

@ all other: sry, that's a friend of mine ^^.

@ Fridjof: see you tomorrow. *Drink* lol

  • I can't import it , it gives me the numframe error. I tried everything , heeelllpppp !

  • Personal message...

  • Thanks :D

  • very good tutorial...vielen dank!

  • sehr gute Arbeit. Good work. Hope it will Work, but i got the same problem as yaada, when i import the script into 3dsmax 2008 it says numframes not correct, so i deleted it from my script and not the Camermovement works good, but i can not open a video in the background, tried mpg, avi, mov at DV pal

  • Thanks, very helpful. I am having a bit of a problem. When I import into 3Ds Max, the grid seems to be on the y axis, it's angeled straight up. Don't know why, but it's weird. Any help would be much appriciated.

  • read comment on p1 ;)

  • Change the y hint to z hint

  • first of all, your video helped a lot, thanks,

but i still have one problem:

when I run the Maxscript, everything works fine,

but my 3d objects doesn't move along,

can u please tell me what's wrong?

  • Maybe you forgot to set the view to the Camera view.

In this case, just activate a view and press "C", or rightclick on the views name and select it to be the camera view.

  • Camera view was already turned on, I can see the camera move, just like it moves in my footage, but the object stays where it is,

has it something to do with the white box u can see in de perspective view in your tutorial? It's like the camera has no effect on my models...

  • The white box is the navigation tool of 3ds maxc 2009.

So the camera is moving? Try to create and animate your own camera and tell me, if that works. If yes, you could just copy and paste the old cameras keyframes to the new ones. And of course set up the correct settings.

  • I' ve fixed the problem :P

did u learned all this by yourself?

some off your videos are simply amazing!

did u use boujou too in your 'bullet movie'?

or did u use 'the bullet' programme?

  • What bullet movie? I did not upload my bullet time tests.

Yes, I learned it myself. Do you know some good free tutorials in the internet? I don't.

  • sorry, I was mistaking..., I confused some movies

No, I don't really know good tutorials on the web,

    mostly I use youtube

I probably need 'after effects' to compose my footage and my 3D object?

if I render them together in 2Ds Max, they don't fit properly, am I right?

  • No, It will stay together. But there are some advanced techniques when compositing in After Effects or other programs. I'll probably do a tutorial for that. It's good if you get use of the compositing work.

  • I installed Windows XP this time and i still can't import a animated background

  • One reason could be, that you did not set the camera properties correctly. When tracking in boujou, you need to set a correct camera with the correct settings for your footage.

Moreover, you should not modify your camerasolve in 3ds max again (scaling, moving, animating).

If you have more problems, you can upload the files on rapidshare and send me the links.

  • Okay i did it, but it doesn't show up

But if i add a image it does show up.

And it also says that i got the video, and it doesn't render it and i did Show background but it is disabled.

I think it is a VISTA problem

  • I get the error -- Unknown property: "numframes" in undefined

So i removed numframes and it worked but now i get the error : -- No ""setAsBackground"" function for undefined

  • And when do you see this error message?

    By loading the Script?

If you just have this problem and if 3ds max goes on loading the max script, you can manually set the background image.

  • Only images are allowed, don't i need the video?

  • You can use videos, too.

  • Where and how?

  • If this is just the problem:

Select your view. Press alt+B or go to Views->Viewport Background->Viewport Background and than click on files and open up your bg vide/image.

Check the boxes "Display Background" and "Animate Background" and in the Aspect Ratio Panel choose it to be "Match Bitmap"

  • Same ^^ that was my 2nd account, sorry xD

I need one with the age of 18 ^^

  • I tryed what you told me but when i select the AVI file and click open, it doesn't do anything, i clicked it 100 times!

But if i add a picture it works fine

  • hmm.

Than you have a problem with your PC.

Try to drag and drop the AVI file from it's folder to the viewports background.

  • Your tutorial is GREAT 5 stars but I have one problem. I use material for shadows but I see plane not only shadow! sorry for english

  • Thanks.

You have to apply the material to the plane. Just drag this materialsphere on your plane. It's very easy.

  • Oh, sorry ^^ wrong

What do you mean with "material for shadows"? Do you have a shadowmap? If yes, it's an other way you have to apply materials..

  • the problem i'm having is around 2:48 in the video when adding shadows. i go to modifier list but nothings there?

  • Be sure to select the light! Than you can see the settings in the modifier panel.

  • yeah i have it selected but still nothing? may be something wrong with my pc?

  • Be sure the light is selected, not the target..

  • okay please help me! my stupid background wont move when i play back the animation.....what do i do?

  • Go to views->viewport background->Viewport background... (pr simply press ALT+B in your view). In the Apect Ratio panel set it to "Match Rendering Output" and at the right site of this panel check the boxes "Display Background" and "Animated Background".

If you have a image sequence make sure the "Sequence" Box is checked when importing it as background.

  • i love you so much.....

  • Well done! By far the best tutorial on matchmoving! But you lost me at 3:50...it sounds like you say "press N", but when I press N nothing pops up like it does for you. What are you doing there to get that 'empty material slot pop up'? Thanks again!

  • By far the best one? Thanks ^^

I'm just wondering, because this really is a beginnertutorial... I'll do a advanced tutorial where I'll get a little deeper in Boujou. I'll tell you than how you can easily rebiuld you scene for reactor animation and how you get the really perfect track with a hard-to-track video.

  • nice video by the way!!!

  • how did you get the background to show???

  • Do you mean in the view or in the renderoutput?

(I explained both in my tutorial!!)

  • o i figured it out lol....im using voodoo instead of boujou....and when i export to max script it doesnt match the video....would you know anything about that???

  • I had a similar problem at first, and then I discovered that 3Ds Max does not change its video playback properties to PAL automatically (I'm working with PAL videos obviously). So you might want to check that out if you don't work with NTSC settings.

  • But if you're working with Boujou, the Maxscript should fix that problem by it self.
