Are you talking emotion like in how most people see Asians or Youth in music? Unemotional! But that can be produced or manufactured at any age!
Or the kind of passion this girl wakes up w/ every single day of her life? Truth, only her technique can be refined!
There's no lack of anything in her. She is only at that point where she is, it any given moment & plays her music becuz she must. Not becuz she's forced to, but becuz it is her Destiny. The emotion & passion she was born with!
This is the kind of emotional connection I both hear and see. That doesn't depend on YOUR interpretation or emotional understanding of the piece. That she does at a deeper level than even she is aware of!
That's apparent in the way she moves so gracefully unrehearsed about the keys, that belie her youth reveal the mature soul of the artist in her music.
It takes absolutely no mental age or depth of understanding to comprehend music this way at any age!
Well Bach is very plain. At least on the surface & that's if you're unaware of the intricacies of his music. Particularly the 3rd movement. Where the Conductor, 1st Chair Violinist & pianist timings are so intricately intertwined!
But I'm more a fan of Yoon A In's & not so much Bach. If you listen to her play Chopin Piano Concerto No 2, 2nd mov at age 10 & can tell me she'll play any better or w/ more emotion at age 18 or 60, then that's just becomes your choice! :D
=D I think it's pretty ridiculous to say that an artist can't mature over a course of a lifetime, that at 10 years of age they've played as well as they ever will! Not to say that I find this performance lacking, but NOTHING's ever perfect. I would love hear her play at a later age because if she plays this passionately now, imagine what a lifetime of experience could do for her playing!
A few gifted artists are born w/ a connection to the source of creativity itself. They're like a conduit for creative passion & energy. Not under their control, so it's either on of off, never better or worse. But her technique will always change & get better w/ experience!
Life is full of variables, that we adjusted throughout life, by what happens to us moment to moment. That's why we can listen to the same recording & it's always different!
This is an extradinary piece played by an absolutely exquisite artist. She is most likely unmatched by any one presently at the Moscow Conservatory. Remember this is where some of the greats in Russian history have played and studied!
Even Horowitz and Rachmaninov, who were Russian, would be pleased by her performance.
For a foreigner like Yoon A In, to play in the midst of these greats, is amazing and an honour she well deserves. Let alone that she is a female at such a young age! :D
For there are things that millions of people can do and of course so does Yoon A In.
That depends on how you define "talent". To me, playing a piece by memory is not a talent, even not worth of any comment, at least, to any oriental young pianist, talented or not.
I'm a fan of Yoon not because she can memory long pieces at age 9, 10 or ealier. In compare to her musical understanding and expression capacity, that would be nothing, nothing relevant. For she is sooooooo talented, oh my...
I have to agree with U38066 on this. What U38066 is saying, is any pianist of any age, playing at this level is far beyond the mere capacity to memorize the said piece.
Yoon, especially, because few adults play with the talent, expression and sincere emotional connection to the intent of the composer, such as Bach, Mozart or Chopin! :P
It would be like addressing the President, before attending a formal Ball w/ "I see you've managed to put your shoes on by yourself, Mr. President"! ;)
A-In, the second movement of the Concerto is among the most moving performances I ever heard. What inspiration!! The Finale is very good too but lacks a little brilliance....or is it the recording?
I admire the conductor ;-)

Explain to us how playing a piece by memory could humiliate one's talent?

In a word, she was there NOT because she "always memorizes the piece that she plays".
You see?

Noble dress and noble performance.
I like it not to mention Chopin with her Bach, but want to listen to her more modern music. There is it a little.
