Attention Drummers/musicians!!! Get the book "realistic rock" by Carmine Appice!! If you like 60's-70's rock drumming it's the Bible. It turned my hopeless brother into a real rock guy. He would work on it every day and half way through the book and after learning the first Zeppelin record beat for beat he would go back to the jams and sound exactly like Simon Kirk of Free and Bad Company...with bonham fills to boot. It could save rock drumming im serious. Amazon.com
The kick drum seems to be tuned tightly. All I'd ever heard about Bonham is that his kick drum was really lose, like a wet blanket. The outside one tuned high but the batter side tuned loose just to the point of taking the wrinkles out of the head.
The biggest thing i wanted to know was what kind of wood it was and he didnt say... the most important thing.. i hope it was maple i just orderd a maple set
@DrummingBonham ahahah yeah you're right that is so retarded he didn't say that. That is one of the most important specs...but yeah I believe they are maples.
@nastymonster There isn't only one order to drum dimensions. I think 26x14 makes more sense, but a lot of manufacturers and drummers will refer to that size as a 14x26.
confirmed...I was doing something right all them years. I was always told when I was still dropping sticks,,,that if your tubs sounded crappy to you, they sounded great out in the audience, and vice versa. and tuned so you could play revelie on the set, or, gotta get up, gotta get up, in the morning.
@sgtpepper1138 Yess.. Ludwig Paiste made exclusively for the Ludwig drum company and sometimes sold along with Ludwig drum-kits.. a long time ago. I had a friend who had an LP 16 crash... sounded pretty good.. not the quality of Formula 602's.. Giant Beat's or 2002's.
it might just be me, but i really like that brown leather throne! anyone know where you can get one, i guess i just like brown leather better than black ha ha
John Bonham's style: Often imitated, but never duplicated. It took me a while to get into his drumming, but watching this gave me a whole new respect for his playing, innovation, and thinking. Great Man. 5/5
After reading slot of the comments on this video, I have something to say. If you like Joey jordison and Travis barker, that is fine. But everyone must realize that bonham was around way before those guys. And has probably influenced them in someway. Just like Joey and Travis influence some of you
correct, but it was the rest of the group that overruled him using the double kick set. In fact, Page complained to manager Peter Grant about it and Grant threatened to release him if he didn't listen to Page. Read the book "A Thunder of Drums" and you'll find it.
He didn't need double bass. He did everything with one foot. Listen to good times bad times by led zeppelin and tell me if you can do that with one foot. Start to listening to good bands and good drummers instead of Slipknot and Joey Jordison. All he does in his solos are eighth notes and double bass... Why do people even look up to him for inspiration for being a drummer; Travis Barker too. Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Jason McGerr, and numerous are way better than that Joey Jordison garbage.
@RyanDiamond100 -- actually he did use a double bass for awhile -- Jimmy hid it from him though because he couldn't keep up with any of the shit that he was doing on it. Nothing recorded, just wanted to dispell the myth that John never used a double bass.
bullshit, post a pic then if you have proof,I'm an old fart who's seen nearly every UK zep show and can assure you he never ever played a show with double bass.
@ascotsmaninusa I never claimed that he played live. He apparently really liked to fuck around on the double in the studio. Search it on google. I have no reason to spout about something that isn't documented.
PS....Ocheltree is a pathological liar. Dont believe a third of what he claims. He sold a bogus Amber kit to the Hard Rock cafe that was supposed to be Bonham's. Word is, he bragged about 'piecing the set together' out of random singles and ripping them off. If you want the truth listen to Henry Smith his earlier tech - seen in Zeps "how the west was won" dvd. Hes the guy tightening the cowbell (moving all over the place) during Moby Dick. Fuck Jeff Ocheltree.
Big Deal, Hard Rock Cafe is a bunch of corporate hacks out to make money selling bad food and watered-down drinks. If I had a Bonham set, I wouldn't give it to them. I'd sell it on EBAY!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
alex van halen is a allaround drummer he plays everything hes also all over his kit
his groves are perfect and so is alex van halen fills alex van halen is a much better drummer than john bonham just watch some alex'van halens vidios pensacola 1995 thats a brilliant solo like all of them are
stratdem - you are insane. Why so queer for Alex? Hes gotten better with age but he is NO Bonham. And never will be. Alex is so mediocre its ridiculous.
so the side that he did not hit was tuned up huh.....so in theory it would deaden the drum and take out a lot of the resonance when sturck...intresting...don't studio rings have a simular effect?
that is how the resonance would work....do you know anything about precussion and tuning at all? tuning is essential........hard to explain on here but....?? can; yousay more than no?
or are you another one of the arrogont british people on here?
man those sound fucking GREAT!!!! Is there anyway to get a sound like that or close to that with vistalites in VERY similar sizes and clear heads??? What about vistalites and coated heads??? Or is it only with big maple drums and all coated heads????
This is great. It's really hard to find times when you can actually hear the way his drums were tuned on the recordings, especially the snare drum, so I usually just tune by ear and it takes a LONG time. This will make things a lot easier. I just wish i could find one of those cowbells, I think they are pretty rare.
it's easy to toss a blanket in the kick and pound away and be used to that sound. Once you tune the kick up and learn to play it opened up though it becomes so much more!
R.I.P. John! After watching John's Moby Dick solo off of their one dvd, I have been more dedicated to drumming, just praying I get as good as he was. lol
I am about to order the Ludwig John Bonham Green sparkle reissue drum kit. Ocheltree mentions that the front bass head is a "medium weight" coated head. Thats all he says. What does he mean? Does anyone know what head that would be?
Probably a Remo Ambassador smooth white or the Ludwig equivalent - Medium weight (Remo ambassador or Evans g1) and smooth rather than coated so you could use black, white or clear but Bonzo allways use the white display heads which looked the best!
I think the new Ludwigs come with Black heads as standard so you will have to order the white head instead if you want your kit to look like this!
No way it's coated. It's a clear head. You cannot have a nice snare sound with a coated skin, because you need to have the thinnest and smoothest possible to have a precise and detailed response from the hits on the top side.
I tried long time ago to put a coated ambassador on the snare side: sounded like shit!
Just wondering, how does he get that double bass pedal sound with just one pedal, lyk in the moby dick solo and in good times bad times. Im guessing that he's just that good! =]
There are a bunch of different techniques you can use like the slide technique or the heel-toe... I know there are alot of videos on youtube that go into the different techniques
Mike Johnston with Mikes Drum Lessons has a video on youtube where he goes in depth on how to get that sound.
Who is this, Jeff Ocheltree? I remember Led Zeppelin played Italy once only. A riot broke out and the band were forced off the stage. Jimmy and John Paul were able to take their instruments along with them to a locker room where they hid, but John's drum set were left behind. Most likely they were pulverized by the crowd, who were fleeing from the police.
I've got this DVD and it's awesome!! (for drummers that is!) The only thing that needs to be said is the years between 1968-1975 (which is important!) John Bonham's original roadie had more insight into Bonhams set up. I once read a interview on Bonhams early drum tuning that is a bit different to what's on this clip, however not that far off I might add!! Here's something to ponder; Bonham would rarely change the snare head and his wood drums were always 4ply, not 6ply as some experts think!
Thank you very much for posting this video, i play a vintage WMP ludwig kit, and just bought a 14x26 3ply ludwig bass in WMP to add to my kit, This is my favorite sound and i really aprietiate you helping me and other get the right sound.

Here's something to ponder; Bonham would rarely change the snare head and his wood drums were always 4ply, not 6ply as some experts think!

Those years are close.
He had a maple kit in natural finish from 67-69, and this green sparkle came in 1970-1973.

Paiste 101 bronze series? That's about as far from the 2002s you can get. Look for PST-5. Best value for the money.

Brass is a 'metal' also. 402 same 'material' as Acrolite only chromed, aluminum alloy.
