Because of that, his mind won't let her go and the Marker is using it against him by making him insane and having "Nicole" confuse and control him. Does that help? You should've played the first game in order to understand it cause it's really complicated and I don't want to spoil anymore than I've already had. Besides, Dead Space 2 tells you all abpout it in the opening.
