yeah its no where near like this anymore...... can't jump anywhere and theres not a lot to do since the water washed most of the rocks downstream. and the swimming area is mainly rocks now.
uhm it's back open guys.. don't know what you all are talking about. =p it was flooded from a levee a long time ago but they fixed it. otherwise the campground there would have gone out of business.
This is no longer what the park looks like. It was hit by over a billion gallons of water when a levee broke. It was completely washed out down to the bed rock. Did some service work there over the summer a year ago. It was still cool but not the same :(
@didgemonster It's not the same, it's actually better. There are more 'shut-ins' uncovered just upstream and downstream, not as interesting as the main ones that were always there, but still worth seeing. The boardwalk has been rebuilt, bigger and wider, there is a new visitor center and a new hiking trail, new day-use picnic shelters, restrooms and the campground has also been rebuilt. The old part of the shut-ins looks exactly the same as it always has.
To all the people who think they know it all. Johnson Shut-ins was NOT hit by a levee break, it was an over topping of the Upper Taum Sauk Reservoir that sent billions of gallons of water rushing downhill through the shut-ins. This happened in December of 2004. It was caused by human error. Gauges at the reservoir malfuctioned and sensors did not indicate that the lake was full, so the pumps kept running till disaster struck. It took them five years to rebuild the park.
@MrYaesu840 Im glad you seem to think you know it all. Not saying that what was stated isnt true but the arrogance to start your comment like that. You must feel great. Im glad I could help. All that matters is that it doesnt look like that anymore and the luster of the area is gone forever. Please get off your high horse. Were all human.

I visited the park in late summer '95 when I was riding my bicycle across America. The park was beautiful. So sad it was flooded out in '05.
