Let's make some sence on this. Modern documents about the issue complain that the explosion was like an atom bomb, but because it was a meteorite it had only the power of an atom bomb and not genetic changes or radiation involved. This seemingly old material gives new information which shows that there was the effects of nuclear explosion and it was not the struck of an meteorite, but something more scifi.

NIKOLAS TESLA and others by 1900 had developed absolutely incredible devices. A supposed death ray was even on the scientists table well before world war I. The only individual who could have pulled such a feat could have been Tesla and the evidence would seem to suggest a very flawed experiment with the western European sky fully lite without explaination (possibly excited electrons from explosion). Comet possible but comet should have been seen in the sky. TESLA and death ray could be it.

So Clarke and some scientists believe it was a comet I am not so sure if this is an adequate explaination. A lot of comets have come close to the earth in the past hundred years (ie Haley's or Hal-Bopp) but no recorded comet in recent history has ever behave in a manner of a nuclear type explosion.
