BERNSTEIN MUSIC EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT

Very few (non musician) critics have any idea how difficult Bernstein's transcendent music is to sing and perform.

The ranges required are enormous. The breath demand is huge. The ensemble is exceedingly hard to work out.

Add the dialogue in a real performance and making it work like this one is an incredible acheivement.

My hat's off to both of you!

As a professional Musical Director and Conductor , I have not only "sat down and banged it out" but have taught it and conducted it. All I did was comment that the notes are just plain incorrect, and the style in which she is singing is inappropriate for the most legitimate score to ever hit broadway....I see no one noticed that I did write that there is potential. These girls do have nice voices, but Maria is singing in too much of a pop style...sorry.

If it's better, then you can critisize this. I thought it was excellent. Anita had a great voice and who cares if one note is off key?! It's pretty hard doing live theatre you know. You can't just do a take two like on the film version of West Side Story.

Anita is really rushing her verses, and i think some of the notes are supposed to be held out a little longer.

Maria was good except for the occasional "pop" sliding. great tone quality though!

Wow, for an amateur production this was really good. Just a note to the people who were picky of Anita in this--"A Boy like That" is very difficult because of the unusual range from low to high. So I think she handled it very well. The only pick I have is the orchestra--it seemed a little slow and heavy. Just me, though.

What sounds like yelling is a really high belt which is really hard to do - the quality of the recording takes a lot away from the sound; in real life a voice like Anita's is amazing, and not like "yelling" at all.

Kickass! Maria is one of the hardest parts to sing in musical theatre. This looks like an excellent production which is refreshing. I've seen some really bad productions of this. Keep singing jaimeee37! Even if you don't make it a career, always keep the joy of singing in your heart.
