This documentary was first played over 17 years ago on TV and my youngest son noticed it then,,,look at the video timeline from 8:52 to 8:56.. notice the cable or rope that is around the lions neck ...

Lions and Hyenas are locked in a competition for survival,hyenas compete with lion prides for food,they can also kill lion cubs given the opportunity,probably the lion sensed that the matriarch was a threat to his territory hence killing her.
