I just love the silver phallic microphone jetting out & clearly visible and in some cases when the newsanchor used to wear the large earpiece--Ah yes;the good ol' days !! I want them back & I want them back now--goddamnit !!
@East180thStreetYard Your brother is much better than Harry Martin is nowadays (they should just keep Harry on 9 and have Ernie do all the Fox 5 newscasts). Taking nothing away from Harry, but today's anchors can't hold a candle to any of the past anchors in NYC.
I remember Jones went to El Salvador or some other war-torn country in 1980 or 1981 to cover a story. He was arrested and thrown in jail for a few days. He then got released.
I remember him hosting a NJ News report show in the afternoon also on Channel 5.
The "Linda" he is referring to in the news update is none other than meterologist Linda Gialanella who eventually made her way down here to WFTS in Tampa but I hear she is no longer with the network....
This was the update of the May 8, 1980 "Ten O'Clock News," with the edit of the opening theme as heard on sign-on and sign-off newscasts at the time. Also, anyone else besides myself miss Christopher Jones?
Count me in as missing Christopher Jones, wmbrown6.
What you are watching in this clip is a grown-up talking to an audience of grown-ups. Head and shoulders above today's "pretty boys" who look like they've all come out of a cookie cutter.
This was the era when looks were important, but charisma and ability counted first.
Jones also mentioned Stewart Klein, which I would include among those who shined in the days when talent still trumped "photogenic" appearance.
...oh, and as always, thank you for the specificity of the actual airdate. I try to track down specific memories and reconcile conflicts in my own memory, so your specific dates really do mean something to me.
I was able to specify May 8, 1980, due to the same news stories being on that night's "Action News" on WPIX, parts of which are scattered around YT.
And I would agree on Stewart Klein. He's probably giving today's "American Idol"-promoting "newscasts" on his old station a thumbs-down - with his usual sardonic wit - from wherever he is today in the next world.
I am watching WPIX and WWOR on Dish Network and I am 1200 miles from NYC. Got to love it. I see WPIX is trying to recover the old independent station before WB took them over. Remember the Million Dollar Movie. Sat afternoon's.

About what time that night would this "update" on the 10:00 news have aired?

Unless I'm mistaken, this aired after "M*A*S*H," around 11:27 or so.

I liked WNEW before FOX took it over. These are great. I feel like I am home in New York again.Thank you for it. Amazing what you yearn for sometimes

Several former indies that are now FOX owned were once great. WTAF/WTXF in Philly kicked ass under previous ownership, as did WFLD in Chicago.

This was also prior to Gabe Pressman's return to WNBC-TV after an eight-year absence, and not long before John Miller joined that station, as well.

And in-between WNEW-TV and WFTS, among her other stints included WABC-TV, "World News This Morning," and KYW-TV.

In addition, Ms. Gialanella's weather report from this particular evening can be seen on . . .
