We sometimes let her out to lay w us at night when we watched tv, but no physical activity...just laying and petting her. The 2 mo rest period is important to let the dog grow connective tissue on top of the fake new acl.
Absolutely.. we keep our dog crated for 2 months to let it heal. The 2 mo period involved us lifting her backside with a sling so she didn't put weight on the leg when she went out to use the bathroom. She had a water bottle made for dogs so she could drink in the crate. after week 1 we did passive therapy where you move the leg slowly and stretch the muscles for the dog-everyday. Then we did some weight shifting exercises by pressing her hips back and forth during week 3 or 4.
@laurentypo You helped me a few months ago...letting me know what to expect. My dog did have the ACL surgery about 7 weeks ago now and has been cleared with his first 2 post-op appointments. However, i've notice some shaking in the leg that he had the surgery on. Did this happen with your dog? Usually, shaking is associated with pain, but another post said that it was normal after surgery because the nerves are fusing together. Any idea whether or not this is true?
@gdigger99 Yes, my dog did have shaking at first. We kept her in a crate for 2 months and only let her out for massages and bathroom breaks (per the vet's directions). At first, she was very scared to use the leg, but you should schedule a check-up appt. with the vet for about 8 weeks after the surgery just to make sure. I think we had a 2 week appt, 4 week, 8 week, then 3 month. She was scared to put weight on the leg, so she had it tremble a little at first--is this what you mean?
