Super !!! "Mister five by five" était vraiment GRAND. Ici, on a droit à deux special guests : Roy "Little Jazz" Eldridge et Coleman Hawkins. Wahoo !!!
Ben Webster does the first Tenor break and Coleman Hawkins does the second.
This very well may have been the same week that the famous photo "A Great Day In Harlem" was taken. I believe that just about everybody in this number is in that photo.
Lester Young and Billie Holliday were both on this same show too.
I left my baby Standing in the backdoor crying Yes I left my baby Standing in the backdoor crying She said son you’ve got a home As long as I’ve got mine When I leave you baby Count the days I’m gone When I leave you baby Count the days I’m gone Where there ain’t no love There ain’t no getting along are these lyrics correct?
Yea man , that's Mr. "Five By Five" . I would like to find him singing one more time ,"Tricks Ain't Walkin' No Mo", with the double entendres wrinkling off his suit and blues .
This comes from a special that aired on CBS in 1957 called 'The Sound of Jazz', which i finally got 2 see when KTWU aired it in 1988. It doesn't get any better (or bluer) than this!
Hats off to the Count! You don't get such great individual performers to stick together without personality and flair, t'was a mighty lineup he had for years!
So damn good! You can tell how much those guys love playing that music. And I gotta say, Papa Jo Jones has the best posture of any drummer you will ever see. So dignified, yet so totally joyous!
What a joyful experience to see and hear these wonderful musicians and Jimmy R. just doin' his thing right along with them. Never was, never will be another drummer like Joe Jones. Thanks to gemunn. Wish I could hear more.
Blessedtoextream, Gerry was definitely a part of this amazing session. Check out Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" from the same show and hear him do a fine baritone sax solo, along with Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins and several other jazz masters.
My grandmother used to talk to me about Jimmy Rushing, Count Basie and other artists, but it wasn't until well after she passed away that I understood what she was talking about. Well I understand now.
I know it is Ben on tenor, and Roy on flugel(!), then The Bean on tenor, but is that Vic Dickenson on trombone? What a MARVELOUS video. I have this recording on record and what a true pleasure to now see the artists in action. Thank you so very much for posting! Excellent!!!

1,000 stories in Jimmy's eyes. A pack of true masters. No winners, but Roy Eldridge's solo took the prize for me.
