If you get the Acolhua version of the story, the island the Mexica were driven to was covered in mexix weed. The Mexica used it as a food source, and so became known as the Mexica, the Weed People, and their home Mexico, the Place of Weeds. Not saying it's 100% true, just thought it was funny. The great and mighty Mexica being originally called the Weed People is an amusing thought, whether it's true or not.

@obnoxioushandle I liked your video. According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (the highest academic order of Mexico's prehispanic past), Tenochtitlan has been dated to much earlier to the 1100s-1200s. I would highly recommend that you go to their web page as it's considered the most scholarly source of documentation.
Amerindians still exist (indígenas) are estimated to be between 12% (pure Amerindian) and 30% (predominantly Amerindian). please get your facts right.
Mexica is the true name. Aztecs was the name that the Tlaxcalteca (their worst enemies) called them peyoratively. When they left Aztlan (with the oother nahuatl peples their name was Azteca, but when they settled in Tenochtitlan they already called themselves Mexica, this is the name they have alwasy prefered. Isn't it obvious from today's Mexico name? Their empire was called Mexico tenochtitlan, you know.
hace tiempo estaba buscando un video como este muy buen video. yo tengo muchos amigos filipinos y japoneses y con este video es mas facil explicarles la cultura mexicana que lamentablemente se esta perdiendo.

The Mexica weren't the only Aztec people. There were two other tribes known as the Tecpaneca and the Acolhua.
Also, on a side note, in Nahuatl, the word Mexico litterally means, "Place of Weeds."
