@metalheaddork666 It may not be a heavy rescue, but fdny has the "merv" which is an ems bus. (Merv=major emergency response vehicle.) It is based at a hospital.

@jazzbutterworth No, It really is a heavy rescue. They do vehicle extraction, high angle and low angle rope rescue, confined space, a little Hazmat, and run back-up for Newark during fires. Now UMDNJ has the SOG (Special Operations Group) units, Two in Newark and one in Camden that deal with MCI's (Mass Casualty Incidents). SOG unit sounds like your MERV. And as in Hospital Based, It is owned and Operated by the University Hospital.

no. Its owned by UMDNJ Operates as a Fire Rescue unit most of time for entrapments and other.

Fire uses rescue as well. UMD staffs this truck to fill the gaps. Essex is a busy county and Newark R-1 (fire)is a busy truck. there have been too many cases of entrapment jobs holding forever because R-1 was on a fire job. UMD now staffs this truck to handle extrication, along with every other rescue discipline from high-angle to trench, as well as HAZMAT. Newark Fire hates it but oh well. There is a need for multiple rescues in Newark, and this is the answer.

UMDNJ R-1 is staffed by 2 rescue techs. not 6+. they work faster and better than the 8-man Newark FD R-1. It is not overkill for UMD to have a heavy rescue as newark FD has 1 rescue that may be assigned to working fires for hours on end and there are generally several cut-jobs a day in newark requiring rescue units. The rescue unit @ UMD is a company that demands and deserves respect, they are among the highest trained rescue techs in the country, they can keep up with FDNY rescue no problem.
