Cherry are not the symbols of only purity for a Japanese. We the Japanese like the beauty of the cherry blossoms which bear a severe winter, suffer troubles and bloom at last. Therefore, we will live now hard like a cherry, even if our lives are short. We can bear any distress like a cherry.
We can also bear such a foolish comment.
