To anyone out there listening: Spend time with the redwoods. More than a few hours, more than a few days if you can. At some point in your life. Spend time in an old growth forest the way you would spend time with friends or family and you will be forever changed.
After driving cross country, spending days and days to get across the vast Great Basin (desert, no trees) it was especially distressing and sickening to finally get to the tiny ribbon of humidity and trees that make up the West Coast...just to see trucks hauling large trees away every single day. Soon there will be even less of that tiny ribbon of growth. It'll all be 'The Great Basin'.
@highcountrytimber standing dead trees provide homes for many rare species like the spotted owl. Plus as the tree rots it releases nutrients back into the soil. Old growth forests should be protected. Wood products should only be coming from plantations.
Okay, I think susutainable logging is great, but replanting after cutting down old growth is like promising to rebuild the empire state building 6" per year after breaking it down for salvage. The problem with logging old growth is that unique and ancient genetics are lost, along with the VAST amount of species associated with a single old growth tree. It is much better to take a dozen mature trees as opposed to one old-growth tree.
You are right. There is more old growth locked up never to be cut. Forest fires destroy more then the trees,it also sterilizes the soil. Once logging is done the are is burned to remove slash and add nutrients back to the soil and trees are replanted.
Those of you who are simply against logging need to understand that nature is every bit as destructive as man. Forest Fires, Beatles, Molds, Bacterial infections, Worms and Moths kill millions and millions of acres of forest every year. The main difference is loggers plant more trees when they are done. I think that is an important distinction.
But all of those forces of destruction in nature are interconnected and beneficial in one way or another. Nutrients in an old growth tree are returned to the surrounding soil and those organisms that live in it and decompose it. When logged, those organisms (hundreds of unique species) are robbed of habitat, food, and future resources.
@svein73 Its not because only a few blind people like you cant see the light. This is someones private property and its called property rights. Trees are growing everyday and there is so much locked up in the world the parks services cant afford to keep these places open. there is more locked up in parked and set asides then there is land to be logged. Now who's greedy?
we replant every time we log a unite. i know its not the old growth that we are planting but on the other hand if WE dont saw them down thats how forrest fires get going like they do and thats also how the forests get ruined from all the under lay that the trees drop on the forest bed. and once agian there is your forest fires again. and besides what most people dont understand is trees stop producing oxcegen after 4 years of being alive then they just become a hazzard.
Actually, the bark of large trees doesn'[t burn well. (if it did, those trees would have been destroyed in forest fires centuries ago - but they didn't burn, because the bark protected them).
SMALLER trees & deadwood on the forest floor are what burns 1st.
Experiment: Try to start a large chunk of wood on fire....very hard to do without lots of small "tinder".
Mature trees are least likely to burn because they are more likely to be able to reach water due to larger root system and canopy.
What people don't realize is that there is "bad" forestry and "good" forestry. Bad forestry is logging or doing any kind of silvicultural management with no regard for the future of the forest. What has really given the forest-products industry a bad reputation is the prominence of "high grading" in many eastern forestlands. This method leaves a forest in poor shape. Also, most people don't know enough about forestry, and listen to all the negative propaganda that's fed to them from the media
@ScarytheIrishTerry Bad forestry is also sending the wood and the jobs overseas. I live in Oregon and back in the day it was a non stop parade of wood out of the country. Profit first. Sold to the highest bidder.
Stop all the hateful name calling and look at facts:
The old-growth logging industry is non-existent on the East Coast of USA. Over 200 years, loggers worked themselves out of a career because big trees don't grow as fast as we cut.
Removal of big trees & shade = higher water temps & massive silt in water, which led to extinction of Atlantic & European Salmon runs in the wild.
Jobs/Life won't exist if we take more than the environment can provide. How about jobs to restore nativefish runs?
@myfavoritehome you have a solid point but we replant every time we log a unite. i know its not the old growth that we are planting but on the other hand if WE dont saw them down thats how forrest fires get going like they do and thats also how the forests get ruined from all the under lay that the trees drop on the forest bed. and once agian there is your forest fires again.
trees are a renewable resource nothing more nothing less. old growth trees do nothing more than suppress new growth, often they are littered with rot promoted by beetles and other insects. We need to cut down more trees to PREVENT infestations of insects and wild fire.
cutting down old growth trees is good because it gets rid of diseased dead insect infested trees. I wish they cut more tree down. Nothing is a bigger waste than letting forests burn or die because nobody wanted to see a tree get cut down. trees are a renewable resource, nothing more nothing less.
EARTH FIRST, THEN WE'LL LOG THE REST OF THE PLANETS
This vidio brings back many good memoris for me I fell timber in Eureka ca for 13 years. Had made many good friends and lost a few to. Keep knocking them down.
The only thing that makes me more sad than watching a tree that's God knows how old die is all the hate shown in all of these comments. From both sides of the issue. I'm not an environmentalist I don't think. Though I do love mother earth & feel it is my responsibility as well as everyone elses to take care of the forests & all the creatures in it!! I have family members that are loggers & feel that SOME logging is a necessary. Emitting so much negitive energy/hate in to this world is not!!
@rainbow7645 The forests got along without us for hundreds of millions of years. That was the biggest tree in the picture. All they can think about is MONEY!
@christo930 Very true!! What I meant by taking care of the forest is that we as humans need to make sure our "fellow" humans don't destroy this beautiful earth.. opps. too late :(
I know that tree i flagged the harvest boundary, its at 41degrees, 41 min, 55.50 sec N 124 degreees, 01' 29.97" W. Check the clear cut on google earth. There was a spotted owl in that tree but the owl was killed by a Bart owl and the nest taken over. The invasive speecies Bart owl is bigger and more aggressive than the Spotted owl and is taking over its habbitat. A fact enviromentals will never admit to. Sad to see that area logged but keeps me working. Go Oregon State, College of Forestry
@rocky2694 no it is not a shame it had to die and was cut down , this is what should be celebrated ... that we use things this earth produces to sustain our own existence. You see we can do that in a responsible manner and the world is a better place for it.
@southcountyman fuck you shit eating monkey get a real job moron. If you ever tried to shoot me you would be fertilizer and that would be your greatest accomplishment in life,
@OscarLimaMike haha no if i tried to shoot you i would make it slow and painful i would go after your loved ones first just to see your dumb ass suffer. and i bet you couldn't even last doing my job you stupid fuck. you say WE are ruining the inviroment no fuck that you are if it wasn't for us do you realize how many fires and shit there would be? of corce not you small dick freak of nature mother fucker. your mother should be ashamed of you.
@southcountyman You should be shot for supporting the killing of such an old tree. Where the fuck is your mind?? That tree has been standing there for hundreds maybe thousands of years and now its gone. Have some respect for nature will ya!!!!!
@southcountyman Whoah, you're not serious are you? "...cut down every last fucking tree!!!!!" I mean, you support sustainable logging and the protection of old growth forests... right?
Its the other way around, completely. Your a joke, you have no values, beyond the ones instilled in you as a child(which are shit values anyways). You have no or very little free thought, very little imagination and most likely your an alcoholic. and oh ya most importantly you have no EMPATHY.
It takes over a 1000 years to grow a tree like that, you cut it down in an hour. FUCK YOU. simple equation.
@whiterussia444 hahahahahahahahaha no it only takes me about 29 min. to cut it down. and dont worrie little boy i hugged the tree first just to mark where i was wanting to cut. i do it 9 hours a day.
you know you fucking no good for anything hippies need to just fucking die or something im a logger out here in oregon. you all think that we cut and dont replant? now how the hell is that when ive been logging my entire life and im 21 now? ive logged unites that my grandparents logged my dad has logged and hell generations before us have logged shit im a 5th gen logger in my family. now how the fuck are we cutting our selves out of busness if we keep logging the same unites generations later???
@southcountyman Duh! At least get a G.e.d. I bet your old cut blocks look like shit having been logged so many times. Dont try to tell an old humboldt logger how it is all sustainable. The rivers suck now, the tributaries that feed those rivers are filled with silt/gravel, so theres NO SALMON SPAWNING in these eons old spawning grounds. Keep telling yourself that your family are good tenders of the forest, keep telling yourself that you are without blame. Enjoy the judgement day son.
@romnsch13 oh i will enjoy that day and how can you say your an old logger when your turning against your own kind? what do you use to write, what do you write on? how do you wipe your ass? what do you live in? without us loggers you wouldn't have shit. so NO im not to blame i do my job as a supply of every day need.
@southcountyman Still using the old toilet paper dodge eh? No one in america wipes their ass with any part of an old growth tree. Now you KNOW that but it's all you have in your very limited little world, as an argument. I was humboldt born and raised , from a jippo logging family, I had the sense enough to NOT kill those trees that are older than CHRIST himself,.....as did the rest of the family. But we are an intelligent clan and you must be of a more primate-like subspecies.
@104bigTruck As a NATIVE of humboldt county and a certified arborist ( Eel valley arborist inc.) I have SEEN WITH MINE OWN EYES the degradation of the Eel river and its spawning grounds. I dont need to READ anything to see what palco has done to the north woods. It's in your face, open your eyes.
@southcountyman You are missing the real point here, WE KNOW WE HAVE TO LOG !!!!! It's the destruction and death of OLD GROWTH that is so disturbing. And the seething hatred you young kids have. Just because your g'parents logged old growth doesnt mean it is STILL a proper thing for YOU to do.
It took hundreds of years to grow an ol' friend like this, and it took a derelict handfull of white trash redneck California intellectuals a day to destroy it!. Nice going scumbag!!!. Makes ya feel so omnipitent doesnt it!. Slobbering money grubbing cowards like these self made bags of dogshit, makes me feel so good about myself. These bastards are the reason there are so many greedy sleazebag rich morons slithering the earth today. NO WONDER everybody thinks Calif. folks are fucking retarded!!.
@1960views these guys are out there doing something you would never have an idea about we loggers do things to make a liveing first and then make the forrests better
@1960views, Personally I am pro logging and I have friends, not inanimate objects! Tress are a renewable resource. Just as you want to protect things, these people are trying make an honest living, put food on the table pay a mortgage. This is their way of life as yours is protecting "trees". Let me ask you, do you pay into un-employment take any government handouts subsidies? Any government funded programs to protect these trees? Chances are that that money came from the Logger paying his taxes
@CRF450XNUT Trees are only a renewable resource if the DEMAND doesnt outway the STUPIDITY and dumbass's use it as a "lame claim to fame" or pay their mortgage, as you so eliquently put it!. Crack whores use their money to pay bills too, and are professional at what they do, but it still dont make moral or right. TREES are what ALLOWS your ass to BREATHE!. Now how much of the "resource" did it take for you to take ten breaths while you thought of writing that bullshit?. TAXES WTF? UTUBE PUTTS!
@1960views the % of air volume to what trees put out vs. what is cut each year and planted each eary has has no affect on the enviroment for a short time the area in a clear cut does not look pretty but i have seen areas clear cut riped and reaplanted grow so full you cant even see through them
Hey dipshit loggers; PLEASE try to argue against me. I enjoy making you fucktards look/feel retarded(as you are). You have zero logic and absolutely no point to make, besides; "them there redwoods be worth lots of money pa"!
And this guy cutting down this ancient tree is proud of himself apparently. Unbelievable. I don't see how anyone could bring themselves to actually do the act but if you are walking around with your head up your ass about what is happening to the earth I guess that's the only explanation I can come up with. Every second we lose 2 football fields of old growth forest. Sooner or later we are going to pay the ultimate price and we are all going to pay, not just the idiots who do this.
You idiots do realize the majority of the majestic redwoods were cut down for railroad ties...
If you think killing something that has been alive longer than the prophet you likely worship for railroad ties is a good cause, you are seriously disturbed.
PLEASE kill yourself now, and save the world the misery of your pathetic and utterly worthless existence.
@quartsboy I didnt "click the vid". stumble brought me to it for soem reason, it was a stumble fail. "go fuck yourself"is the best arguement you have? Insults that miss the mark, and no point to make in your own idiotic, irresponsible logging promoting defense?
@The4LA2Baker0 Dude, seriously, Why don't you go pick the bugs out of your dreadlocks, kiss your Al Gore poster, and maybe even think about not breathing anymore. You are wasting oxygen that the rest of us could use. Our industry is not and could never be doomed, unless we keep dealing with people like you that think Mother Nature is the best forest manager. Why don't we go ahead and let the fires, bugs, and diseases run their course? That would be brilliant and productive.
@stumpybeaver666 Your ignorance really shows, you don't believe mother nature is the best forest manager? How the fuck did the old growth forests get here.....mother nature.....how the fuck are all the old growth forests disappearing....loggers, not fires or rawt. I'ved lived and traveled the PNW my whole life and i've never seen a good argument for cutting trees, other than to manage areas that are so fucked up from logging already they need to be thinned because they are bunch of matchsticks.
@constipatedkangaroo We here can all tell who the ignorant one here. I have lived my 47 years in the PNW, and have been a timber faller for almost 30. Do you think that I have possibly seen more than you, o great one? True, most redwood is impervious to fire and rot, but isn't the only old growth species. Fir, pine, hemlock, cedar, spruce can all be considered old growth. The are not so impervious to bugs, disease and fire. I don't know of any mismanagement now, except for not logging enough.
@stumpybeaver666 Trees=Money simple as that and the bigger the tree the more money it's worth. It's simply just a greed thing i don't blame you for wanting to feed your family. However i do blame you for not being honest and admitting that this is a destructive and unsustainable practice that has to end (cutting old healthy trees, not young ones). Paper and wood products are nice but they are not crucial to sustaining society, there are many other plant products that could easily replace trees.
@constipatedkangaroo I do admit trees=money. Trees supply a Huge economic factor in the U.S. Almost every job out there is affected by timber, and the supply and demand. It is not necessarily the size of the tree that is worth, but the species. This certain tree looked to me like a cull, judging by the way it broke so soon. For the most part we all do what we can to save these giants. Sometimes they have to be cut in the name of progress or safety. Sorry you take things so hard.
@constipatedkangaroo to what end do u credit your comment " However i do blame you for not being honest and admitting that this is a destructive and unsustainable practice" when loggers are cutting trees that are 6 9 10 feet across in my area and its a 3rd and 4th gen of tree stands
@norcallogger All ya have to do is check ot constipatedkangaroo's page, and you will be enlightened. Last time I checked, all his favorites were pot... Hmm... Go figure. He is oxygen wasting welfare p.o.s troll that has nothing better to do than complain about us working class that pave his road to nowhere.
@constipatedkangaroo just curious, do you live in a home? what is it made out of? do you wipe your ass/blow your nose? with what? do you use paper? what kind of car do you drive? oh a subaru you cant even promote american companies... what do you do for a living? how do you afford all your pot? how do you have so much time to argue with everyone about this? I admire your enthusiasm i really do but you need to stop and think about all this!! we have to support 325 million people with this stuff!!
@constipatedkangaroo You must either live in or moved from southern california where all the other suburu driving, hippie tree hugging motherfuckers came from. The only good tree is a stump. Go fuck yourself Hippie!
@TheTgunn13 Ha Ha wow not get laid much? or maybe your just gay? not sure what it is but i am sure that god fuckin hates you and loves me alot more. I will never move to Cali because obviously it's full of small dicked faggots, and haters, like urself, better watch ur back bitch cause my subaru is gonna run ur faggot ass over then it's gonna stop and haul ass in reverse over ur fuckin head, Ha Ha Ha u little bitch god fuckin hates u, Ha Ha Ha.
@stumpybeaver666 eventually it would be productive just not in your life time thats what you cant seem to see your life spans 70yrs or so big reds live for several thousand and have plenty of time to regenerate and manage themselves man is the problem they did ok without us. ive found most americans like putting people down without thinking about what they are really saying especially their fellow countrymen.
@yellabeast You don't get it. This year I have fell redwood ranging from 12" to almost 80". Believe it or not, not a one of these trees wereover 200 years old. The company that I fall for has 40,000+ acres of timberlands. They harvest 50 million bf per year off these lands. Sounds like a lot, but they estimate that their timberlands GROW 300 million bf annuallly. Looks to me like it works out pretty good for the forest?
@stumpybeaver666 Your industry IS doomed. My roommate of several years and next door neighbor were both in the timber industry in the NW and they are the ones that told me, along with any one else in the community involved when the subject came up. You can lie to yourself all you want but facts are facts. Funniest thing is, you guys think I'm against logging. Im not(why would I live with a logger?), just irresponsible logging that you seem to think is not only good but necessary for some reason.
@The4LA2Baker0 railroad ties are not important huh have you ever gone to the store and bought something? i bet you have!! I also bet that product got to that store via a train!! isnt that weird? Now If you were a legitimate hippie that lived in the woods and never took a single luxury from society then I would believe your argument but your not!! your a hypocrite... you log onto youtube and say dont do this dont do that in your warm cozy home with all your store bought products
@brandro87 There was ZERO rail service to Eureka. Humboldt county is/was 80-95% self sufficient, a few trucks and a boat once in a while. You really are stupid beyond belief. Even if I did use rail, that doesnt mean it was a good idea, or even OK, to cut the redwoods down for ties when there are so many alternative resources that are cheaper and better.
@The4LA2Baker0 no rail to your town... where did the trucks coming in load up? somewhere close, maybe a train depot? im really happy for your county being self sufficient but the country is not and is fully dependent on our railways!! dont call me stupid again you fucking piece of shit!!! ive read your comments and your lacking the ability to have a legitamate conversation, grow up and TALK to people!!! oh by the way im a mechanical engineer i think i know how to solve problems.....
@brandro87 You don't realize you are a using straw man argument? I never said rail was bad, you seem to be creating something to argue with(arguing with yourself). The problem is; using redwoods for something as mediocre as railroad ties simply because it was profitable, and convenient. You may not appreciate organisms older than Jesus and Rome, but many people do. "Salvaging" trees is just as harmful. I can explain that if need be.
@The4LA2Baker0 the railway stuff was for a comment you made to someone else in the old days they did what they wanted we cant change that I DO LOVE nature thats why im a wildland firefighter in the summer i want to help our forests i watch these videos for the skill involved in properly falling a big tree i dont condone harvesting old growth but i am smart enough to know that i dont know what the situation is and thats why i hate all the people that banter stuff they dont know anything about
@The4LA2Baker0 And that nice warm home you are living in, the paper you wipe your ar$ with, the computer desk you are sitting at. Think about it bud!!!
@locologger None of which require redwood, or even wood at all. Those can all be made inexpensively and higher quality with alternate fibers. If you are going to rebut, try to make a point.
I am looking to license this shot to use it on television if anyone knows how I can contact the owner of the footage please let me know by private message.
I love this video for two reson reson one I'm a logger that love the sound those bis monsters make coming down reson two it pisses off a bunch of fucking dumb ass hippies ...THEY HUG 'EM WE CUT'EM LONG LIVE THE LOGGER
hey thanks for destroying our old growth forests your must feel proud. A tree like that is equalant to a whole forest of planted forest which have are and have been used to supply our lumber. If you are looking for job security work on planting and cutting down enginnered managed forest not our valuable old growths. Loggers are to lazy and stupid to understand that principle. There should be a required mandate for one tree down 10 to replace.
@nap130mule904 your dumb you know that. the tree was dead when the they cut down see how it blew up when it hit the ground it was rotten in the center. it would have been a hazard tree.
I dont want to sound green or earthy, but you would think if we can create the internal combustion engine to make a chainsaw that cuts down this tree, there are limitless alternatives to needing 2x4s to build a house. Why not recycle tires and reinforce them to make a 2x4 alternative?
@brssgirl yes as a matter of fact. That tree was cut and used to make your world a better place. Remember that when you do your Christmas Cards, or go to the bathroom, or pull up in your driveway, or go bowling or fishing. I understand what you are trying to say, please know that the men who work and make their living in the woods are the ones who love the woods more than anyone. And they KNOW the woods more than anyone. That was an amazing job. God Bless the Fallers!
@myfavoritehome wow! I could have respected a good argument, but your anger comes from somewhere else. Look I am not an advocate of destroying the timber lands. What makes me upset is that tens of thousands of board feet of timber go to rotting waste when large wildfires leave burned trees and are left to rot and become useless because of idiots like you. If you are not one of those i apologize. However I am afraid you are. Good day.
@MrSamuel1414 Thats because wildfires are a natural part of the life cycle of a forest. Those "board feet of timber going to rotting waste" are necessary for the forest to regrow properly. removing the burnt trees is just as bad as clear cutting. If you have ever been to the redwood forest you would have seen fallen/burnt trees giving birth to many more saplings in that "rotting timber".
@myfavoritehome rofl your a tard... the only time loggers even get to log bigger timber is cause it's dying or cause of fire so learn what your talking about before you open your faggot ass mouth. Back in the day yeah they logged a lot of big timber these days we don't log much over 4 ft across the but unless mother nature has fucked it up already. So when you have to wipe your ass with your hand cause faggots like you shut down all the loggers don't cry to me.
Redwoods are more resilient than you think. If the tree is downed by a logger or winds the living layer will begin to grow new trunks. The tree will only die completely if you take out the roots, otherwise it will just grow back.
@foskco87 These trees are not hard to find. I am a logger in Northern California and they are everywhere. And to everyone else, how many of you are loggers, or foresters, or hell anyone who knows what they're talking about re forest harvesting. California has some of the strictest logging regulations in the country, so if they were able to get a harvest plan that included this tree a lot of people agreed it had to go.
Almost all of North America used to be covered by trees like this. Where are they now? Gone.
I live in Sonora county by Redwood Street, but there are no redwoods on it. Where are they? Gone.
The Cedars of Lebanon (the entire country was covered by old-growth at one time) were cut by Egypt to build temples and after enough logging you get desert.
That's what logging will do to North America as well.
@myfavoritehome I hope you are being satirical, because otherwise you have absolutely no understanding of climates or ecosystems. North American was not covered by trees such as this one, at least since the last ice age. These trees require a certain climate to grow to this size. You lived on Redwood Street with no redwoods? Well I have lived on Washington, Pine, and Maple streets, without either tree or historical President in sight.
@myfavoritehome Wow! and Wow! again. Do you hear yourself? If you think that cutting trees down makes a desert then you are not even worthy of debate. You are an ignorant puppet. Its people like you that make me sick. I pray you have no children. If you do I pray they see what a fool you are.
where at northern cali is this im from syskiyou county and we got some of these up there. Dads been loggin for 36 years and does the fire logging. I did it for one year and joined the marines back in 08
@niburu2012, this one was probably pretty rotted out and they figured they would drop it safely instead of letting it fall on someone, did you see the part when it broke in half at 4:39?
@NathansBackwoods Big redwoods all break when they fall. Sometimes they break into 4 pieces. Also, redwoods don't really rot out. The logs will rot when the tree is dead on the ground but not when they are standing.
Sure picked a piss poor lay for this tree, not to mention all the logs that were broke underneath, what a waste. I'd be embarrassed if somebody had a video of me messing up this bad. The real sad part is the timber company thought this is alright, somebody should have been fired, that's the problem college educated morons who know nothing about falling timber running the show.
You really tlk alot of shit for kust watching a vid. How do you know there was a better lay avalable??? Judging by the way the butt slid off of that stump leads me to believe that this timber faller has an idea of what he is doing....
It looked more like the tree was rotten to me, but I aint no old growth expert and dont claim to be. Im sure you have never even bared into a redwood. . . .

Why belly ache about felling these older trees. They are mature and are starting to rot. Removing these dying trees helps promote the younger trees.

ForestryFirst 5 months ago
@ForestryFirst
But all of those forces of destruction in nature are interconnected and beneficial in one way or another. Nutrients in an old growth tree are returned to the surrounding soil and those organisms that live in it and decompose it.

ScarytheIrishTerry 9 months ago
@ScarytheIrishTerry Bad forestry is also sending the wood and the jobs overseas. I live in Oregon and back in the day it was a non stop parade of wood out of the country. Profit first. Sold to the highest bidder.
stoker20 2 weeks ago
Stop all the hateful name calling and look at facts:
The old-growth logging industry is non-existent on the East Coast of USA. Over 200 years, loggers worked themselves out of a career because big trees don't grow as fast as we cut.
Removal of big trees & shade = higher water temps & massive silt in water, which led to extinction of Atlantic & European Salmon runs in the wild.
Jobs/Life won't exist if we take more than the environment can provide. How about jobs to restore nativefish runs?
myfavoritehome 10 months ago
@myfavoritehome you have a solid point but we replant every time we log a unite. i know its not the old growth that we are planting but on the other hand if WE dont saw them down thats how forrest fires get going like they do and thats also how the forests get ruined from all the under lay that the trees drop on the forest bed. and once agian there is your forest fires again.
southcountyman 9 months ago
trees are a renewable resource nothing more nothing less. old growth trees do nothing more than suppress new growth, often they are littered with rot promoted by beetles and other insects. We need to cut down more trees to PREVENT infestations of insects and wild fire.
duckkillerclydeclyde 10 months ago
cutting down old growth trees is good because it gets rid of diseased dead insect infested trees.

The only thing that makes me more sad than watching a tree that's God knows how old die is all the hate shown in all of these comments. From both sides of the issue. I'm not an environmentalist I don't think. Though I do love mother earth & feel it is my responsibility as well as everyone elses to take care of the forests & all the creatures in it!! I have family members that are loggers & feel that SOME logging is a necessary. Emitting so much negitive energy/hate in to this world is not!!

That would be brilliant and productive.
stumpybeaver666 1 year ago 2
@stumpybeaver666 Your ignorance really shows, you don't believe mother nature is the best forest manager? How the fuck did the old growth forests get here.....mother nature.....how the fuck are all the old growth forests disappearing....loggers, not fires or rawt. I'ved lived and traveled the PNW my whole life and i've never seen a good argument for cutting trees, other than to manage areas that are so fucked up from logging already they need to be thinned because they are bunch of matchsticks.
constipatedkangaroo 1 year ago
@constipatedkangaroo We here can all tell who the ignorant one here. I have lived my 47 years in the PNW, and have been a timber faller for almost 30. Do you think that I have possibly seen more than you, o great one? True, most redwood is impervious to fire and rot, but isn't the only old growth species. Fir, pine, hemlock, cedar, spruce can all be considered old growth. The are not so impervious to bugs, disease and fire. I don't know of any mismanagement now, except for not logging enough.
stumpybeaver666 1 year ago 2
@stumpybeaver666 Trees=Money simple as that and the bigger the tree the more money it's worth. It's simply just a greed thing i don't blame you for wanting to feed your family. However i do blame you for not being honest and admitting that this is a destructive and unsustainable practice that has to end (cutting old healthy trees, not young ones). Paper and wood products are nice but they are not crucial to sustaining society, there are many other plant products that could easily replace trees.
constipatedkangaroo 1 year ago
@constipatedkangaroo I do admit trees=money. Trees supply a Huge economic factor in the U.S. Almost every job out there is affected by timber, and the supply and demand. It is not necessarily the size of the tree that is worth, but the species. This certain tree looked to me like a cull, judging by the way it broke so soon. For the most part we all do what we can to save these giants. Sometimes they have to be cut in the name of progress or safety. Sorry you take things so hard.
stumpybeaver666 1 year ago 2
@constipatedkangaroo to what end do u credit your comment " However i do blame you for not being honest and admitting that this is a destructive and unsustainable practice" when loggers are cutting trees that are 6 9 10 feet across in my area and its a 3rd and 4th gen of tree stands

Looks to me like it works out pretty good for the forest?
timberfaller666 1 year ago
@yellabeast the point is to manage it now so the trees we cut in the future are sustainable for them to cut and the cycle goes on
norcallogger 1 year ago

@brandro87 There was ZERO rail service to Eureka. Humboldt county is/was 80-95% self sufficient, a few trucks and a boat once in a while. You really are stupid beyond belief. Even if I did use rail, that doesnt mean it was a good idea, or even OK, to cut the redwoods down for ties when there are so many alternative resources that are cheaper and better.
The4LA2Baker0 10 months ago
@The4LA2Baker0 no rail to your town... where did the trucks coming in load up? somewhere close, maybe a train depot? im really happy for your county being self sufficient but the country is not and is fully dependent on our railways!! dont call me stupid again you fucking piece of shit!!! ive read your comments and your lacking the ability to have a legitamate conversation, grow up and TALK to people!!! oh by the way im a mechanical engineer i think i know how to solve problems.....
brandro87 10 months ago
@brandro87 You don't realize you are a using straw man argument? I never said rail was bad, you seem to be creating something to argue with(arguing with yourself). The problem is; using redwoods for something as mediocre as railroad ties simply because it was profitable, and convenient. You may not appreciate organisms older than Jesus and Rome, but many people do. "Salvaging" trees is just as harmful. I can explain that if need be.

myfavoritehome 1 year ago
@myfavoritehome wow! I could have respected a good argument, but your anger comes from somewhere else. Look I am not an advocate of destroying the timber lands. What makes me upset is that tens of thousands of board feet of timber go to rotting waste when large wildfires leave burned trees and are left to rot and become useless because of idiots like you. If you are not one of those i apologize. However I am afraid you are. Good day.
MrSamuel1414 1 year ago 10
@MrSamuel1414 Thats because wildfires are a natural part of the life cycle of a forest. Those "board feet of timber going to rotting waste" are necessary for the forest to regrow properly. removing the burnt trees is just as bad as clear cutting. If you have ever been to the redwood forest you would have seen fallen/burnt trees giving birth to many more saplings in that "rotting timber".
Your real problem is you see timber, not a tree.

Redwoods are more resilient than you think. If the tree is downed by a logger or winds the living layer will begin to grow new trunks. The tree will only die completely if you take out the roots, otherwise it will just grow back.

Oh look! A crazy huge beautiful tree thats hundreds of years old and is incredibly hard to find. Lets destroy it!!! No wonder the world is fucked.
foskco87 1 year ago

That's what logging will do to North America as well.
myfavoritehome 1 year ago
@myfavoritehome I hope you are being satirical, because otherwise you have absolutely no understanding of climates or ecosystems. North American was not covered by trees such as this one, at least since the last ice age. These trees require a certain climate to grow to this size. You lived on Redwood Street with no redwoods? Well I have lived on Washington, Pine, and Maple streets, without either tree or historical President in sight.
whiskeyguy707 1 year ago 2
@myfavoritehome Wow! and Wow! again. Do you hear yourself? If you think that cutting trees down makes a desert then you are not even worthy of debate. You are an ignorant puppet. Its people like you that make me sick. I pray you have no children. If you do I pray they see what a fool you are.

transdrole 1 year ago
@transdrole Yeah indeed, why don't they log more smaller trees?
niburu2012 1 year ago
@niburu2012, this one was probably pretty rotted out and they figured they would drop it safely instead of letting it fall on someone, did you see the part when it broke in half at 4:39?
NathansBackwoods 1 year ago
@NathansBackwoods Big redwoods all break when they fall. Sometimes they break into 4 pieces. Also, redwoods don't really rot out. The logs will rot when the tree is dead on the ground but not when they are standing.
cooketnet 1 year ago
Sure picked a piss poor lay for this tree, not to mention all the logs that were broke underneath, what a waste. I'd be embarrassed if somebody had a video of me messing up this bad. The real sad part is the timber company thought this is alright, somebody should have been fired, that's the problem college educated morons who know nothing about falling timber running the show.
rtt090 1 year ago
You really tlk alot of shit for kust watching a vid. How do you know there was a better lay avalable??? Judging by the way the butt slid off of that stump leads me to believe that this timber faller has an idea of what he is doing....
Smart ass.... I hate smart asses...

It looked more like the tree was rotten to me, but I aint no old growth expert and dont claim to be. Im sure you have never even bared into a redwood. . . .
