@ComputerHelp007 These solid fuel rockets are used for the airplane to take off short field. Its a huge amount power for a short time to get the airplane off the ground in a short distance.
@ComputerHelp007 To gain altitude and airspeed quickly to avoid enemy fire, or to take off in a very small space. These planes can land and take off in very small places even without a "runway". You should see C-130 Gunships pummel things, it's an excellent aircraft.
@gangstahero1770... The C-130 that was used to take off and land on the carriers did not use JATO Bottles. the C-130 Had 29 touch-and-go's and 21 successful unarrested/unassisted landings/take-offs
@agentfazexx JATO is the slang term for Rocket Assisted Take Off. RATO would be the "Politically Correct" Term but FUCK POLITICAL CORRECTIVENESS and SOFT LANGUAGE as George Carlin called it one time on a Stand Up Comedy Monologue Show!!!!!
It's the Blue Angels C-130 or otherwise known as "Fat Albert". "Fat Albert" is the name given to this and only this C-130. It is known as JATO assisted take off, even though they are actually rockets. The Blue Angels stopped using JATO as of the 2009 show season. These bottles are no longer made and the are consider "Fire -n- Chuck" or one time use. The current supply is getting to a point that it is a waste for Fat Albert to use.
@P3SuperBee Currently I believe the only where C-130 use JATO is down on the ice in Antarctica. The US Air Force Reserves fly a LC-130 in support of scientific research being done there. LC-130 are equipped with skis.
I assume most of you are too young to remember the B-47, the workhorse of the Strategic Air Command in the 1950's thru mid 60's. The solid fuel rocket motors (bottles) were developed to help get a fully laden B-47 off the ground ) ft. Even though the JATO motors were solid fuel, we originally called them JATO for Jet Assist Take Off because they were assisting a jet powered aircraft. There were different bottles but on average each bottle provided 1k thrust for 8-10 seconds.
Good to see older folks using the internet (especially youtube) and giving valid insights & opinions, instead of the usual garbage comments which generally lower the tone!
Is it true that fat albert won't use the JATO anymore? I read somewhere that the rocket bottles they use aren't being manufactured anymore, is this true?
i saw something on tv the other day where the us military outfitted one of these with jets not only for taking off, but it also had some pointing forward so the thing could land within a few hundred meters rather than the 1800 meters necessary for normal landing. trippy shit

The always classic demo by the Hercules. Favorite Aircraft take offs along with the RAF Vulcan Bomber and the B1 Lancer Bomber.

those are rockets not jets.

RATO Rocket Assisted TakeOff not
JATO Jet Assisted TakeOff
There is almost no such thing as JATO.
The rocket's fuel burns for a few seconds. At that time the rocket's fuel is exhausted.
TheRambunctiousone 6 months ago
they used them in vietnam to take off on short runways
pcolalongfellow 7 months ago
Why do they use this? (besides for airshow purposes)

It's a C130 that wants to be an F/A-18. Well, at least it's fulfilled it's dream.

errhem 3 years ago
the jest are solid fuel rockets, the pilot uses a compas to see what heading they are going when they take off as they cant see where they are going.

lmao

@errhem They are solid fuel rockets that have been attached to the plane.. It's not a jet.

there amazing aircrafts.

oh thanx for the info
so when and where do they use this stuff besides airshows and stuff?

It looks more like a RATO to me (Rocket Assisted Take-Off)

Same thing. Blue's have just been using the phrase JATO for ever. RATO sounds more like a retard organization.
