I made the unit and it works great. When I drilled the end caps (on a drill press), the camera mounting screw was never 100% straight because of the unevenness on the inside of the cap. For 2 bucks this has been corrected by using a brass end cap which has a flat inner surface and is easier to drill.
This is pretty impressive but I would never trust my DSLR on something I put together on my own. I've been using the Cam Caddie Scorpion going for about $38 on Amazon and it's improved every single shot I've taken since I bought it. I recommend it to anyone seeking an independent setup.
You can get the standard 15mm carbon firber rods here. Best deals.(h.t.t.p. ://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dllViewItem&item=160604877652&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT)
Thanks for the effort you put into organizing your video. I recent purchased a 5D MarkII and I've been trolling youtube for DIY mounts. Yours is one of the best I've seen so far. Should I build one, I will let you know how it turns out.
I just used your walkthrough to build my own shouldermount. Even though I drilled some slightly skewed holes in my end caps, it looks and works great! Not heavy at all with the 7D. Thanks so much for posting this!!!
@MrRossGodwin Thanks! You are the first person to actually say they made it. I had some trouble drilling the wholes straight myself, but after a few tries I've gotten pretty good at it.
@antdproductions Im actually on location right now where I've been using it for several days straight. Honestly, it is better balanced and smoother than my colleague's $2k pro version. He is not pleased, but everyone else is really impressed by it. The foam padding is beginning to wear down a bit, but thats the easiestpart to replace (considering the original tube itself was about 6ft). In sum: in its current field test it is blowing away expectations! Thanks!
I did something like this with PVC. Yours is more sturdy but I like lighter.

@zayriq Thanks! It's not one of the flashier ones, but all of the supplies are easily accessible, its functional, and it's cheap!

Tip: If you use Loctite thread compound and let it set, the pipes will stay in place more securely. Good project.

@alanstarkie2001 Thanks for the input, that could definitely come in handy especially with the weighted cap. Nothing else ever really comes loose.
