Have never seen film and not sure I'd be able to watch it given how unsettling and affecting this video is; that said I do watch this over and over. Extraordinary song and singer. Great post, thank you.
@breedak It's definitely a very moving film. It's quirky, witty, confusing, and ultimately it's just full-on humanity at its best and worst. I highly recommend.
This film never got the attention or recognition it deserved. I think the reason is that there's so much going on that it's impossible for most people to appreciate - or even fully understand - the first time they see it. I didn't start to really like it until the second time I saw it, and it wasn't until the third time that I realized how amazing it is. In this underrated film, I think Henry Gibson's performance is probably the most underapreciated. He was really good.

I got Wise Up so far...hopefully will do Driving With One Hand on the Wheel or Ghost World next ;) Any suggestions! It's okay, I'm poor in case Michael Penn (hopefully not another of Sean Penn's brothers) sues me, or threatens to beat me, if her husband's related to crazy Sean Penn (although I'm Left of the spectrum, too, Sean!).
I think this is the most beautiful song I've ever heard. It's so emotional and it really hits me hard, this lady has the voice of an angel. Simply Amazing! x
Anyone that doesn't appreciate this film and soundtrack simply lack depth. Likely they haven't lived enough to understand what they are experiencing. They can not be argued with. The unfortunate thing is... they also often lack the common sense to keep their mouth shut regarding things they don't understand. Let them pass by...
@aldaly321 I was inspired by the depth of this movie, where most I talked to, said too long, could not understand, and assorted babble. I believe they were incapable of sitting through a long movie, and absorb content.
It's almost as though Aimee Mann wrote these songs specifically for this movie. Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant. This movie is a metaphoric masterpiece. Watch it once and be disturbed, twice and baffled, three times and mesmerized. Paul Thomas Anderson, Hats off to you brother. Incredible flick.
thats funny, katey leaving him ir what ? but the movie ! beautiful song , and that"s why i tuned in ! serg... playa del rey , ca ... at home listening to the rain , coming down hard , ... happy holiday's to all , and to all a good night ! thank you amee mann , really enjoyed you're song ! do you have others ? naw just kidding !!
Talk about a video that matches the music. Sad music is some of my favorite music. You can feel it to the depths of your soul. But somehow it feels good at the same time. I've got this movie, which I first saw when it came out, on my Netflix list thanks to listening to this music again.
This movie seemed a little too over-the-top in terms of acting, and a bit too - lurid? - in its cinematography - like the rain of frogs, not the occasional spring peeper descending in a light spring rain, but a cascading torrent of heavy bufo toads, smashing car windows for block after block in downtown LA - point being what? Miracles happen? Ask the street cleaners how exalted they felt afterwards - The points were valid, but the story line was too heavy-handed for my taste -
@SupernalOne I'm gonna throw this out on the stoop, see if the cat licks it up; it needed to be "heavy handed" because that's life. We're often paralyzed by events and occurrences we think had to have been fished from the cosmos and thrust on us from some sort of vengeful God. The idea behind your examples is that these things happen to us all and because of that we're all linked. Odd as it may be, painful as it may be, these things happen to us all.
OK, I won't disagree - tho I would have thought of it as: we all make stupid mistakes out of clueless ignorance, we all get our heads wedged due to emotional attachment & general hormones, and sometimes someone only gets one shot in life at doing a thing right, & if not we suffer the inevitable consequences, obvious only in hindsight. but once we develop character with time, those of us left standing can acknowledge in others their flaws, humanity, & virtues. Cosmic influence is optional :^)
una canción hermosa para una película muy bien lograda. Algunos pasajes representan la vida y lo ciego que somos frente a la realidad de otras personas...
I like this ALOT because you took the song and added a visual context that PT Anderson would never add to the film, yet in this short clip it reminds you of what came before and why these characters are in this funk. Lovely!
@CitizenCindy You said it. Magnolia is a stunning film. I lived in Europe when it came out and I watched it several times and it made me realize how insane life in the U.S. can be. But it's a beautiful fim, filled with pain and redemption.
this is a kind of religion, it doesn't says god lives or somethign. when something happens there shouldn't be a god, "it just happens!!" and we have to accept that that's how the world is!POINT don'tu think?

Magnolia was one of the great films of all time. Paul Thomas Anderson (director) also wrote the screenplay for this in his late 20's. The connections made in this film, the feared confrontations, the inevitable meltdowns, and the brilliant resolve. One word: encore.

Does anyone know why this film is titled "Magnolia"? What does it mean?
JelloFarming 2 years ago
Supposedly the writer, Paul Thomas Anderson, already had the name "Magnolia" in his head before the script was even written.
There is however, an old concept that eating the magnolia tree's bark helped cure cancer (in the case of Jimmy Gator).
