As far as I'm concerned, the people who dislike this should all be up there together in the Statesville prison; along with Martin and Dutch and Lana and Thames and Sally Decker.
I love the way Leslie Nielsen look at the coffee being poured into the overflowing cup, then across at Alan North without moving a muscle in the fifth episode epilogue; totally makes the scene!
Shirley you can't be serious! 5 people didn't like this? They must be deaf, dumb and blind. This was one of the funniest TV comedies of all time. The cast was perfect as was the writing. There has never been a show coming anywhere near the comedic quality this show had! And yes, I am serious! Signed, Shirley Decker (Sally's sister doing 1-5 at the Statesville Prison.
I saw Police Squad for the first time this week (I borrowed the DVD and having enjoyed it so much I've just ordered my very own copy) - a pleasure to watch, truly laugh out loud funny. My life is a little better now!
Police Squad was clearly way before its time, if such a perfect comedy was on nowadays I'd like to think that they would have commissioned another series at least. Oh well, at least we have the Naked Guns I guess.
The last ending was the best because since it was the last episode, they thought oh what the heck, the show's done so let's damage this place. Notice in 6:34, a plaster tile hit actor Peter Lupus (Norberg) on the head but he still stayed motionless. That was classic!!! RIP Leslie Nielsen, you will shirley be missed. :(
I'm surprised no other TV show has used the same concept.Although Parodies haven't been the same since the 80's,I'd still watch if someone made a TV show with the same sensibilities as Police Squad.
What a great show - They had to cut one of the beginnings where Belushi had died by having cement shoes/tossed in a lake because he died in real life right before the show he was supposed to be on. I'd like to see that beginning some time...
Anyway, RIP Leslie Neilsen - you seriously have made me laugh all my life.
It got cancelled because the ratings dropped significantly after the first show, and kept dropping. Personally, I think it just got too repetitive for people. If you watch all six episodes back to back, the formula becomes maddeningly similar. It's essentially the same joke, over and over. Even the "freeze frame" thing at the end gets old after a while.
Of course, the real joke here is that these epilogues each contain the only joke in the episode, always a really lame one, that the characters themselves consider funny.
I hadn't noticed it before, but these scenes recap the previous eps, with each new crook sharing Stateville prison with all previous villains.
The last segment, starting at about 5:45, was done with everyone knowing that it was, in fact, the last segment, and that they could wreck the set.
The series lasted six weeks in the spring of 1982 because ABC simply wasn't satisfied with the ratings it was getting (compared to "MORK & MINDY", which soon returned to replace it, and THAT was cancelled at the end of the season as well). "POLICE SQUAD", at that time, was an "acquired taste"....either you liked it or you didn't. The theatrical movies spun off from the series were more successful.
Funny Funny man, I LOVE your movies, Question of the Day to honor Leslie Nielsen. Who are you and how did you get in here? I'm a locksmith and i am A Locksmith
I like the chimp in the suit just throwing all the papers in the air. And Norberg coming in the middle of the closing credits and him hammering the poster to the wall with the phone and everything getting destroyed...one of the funnies shows too bad it was cancel after just 6 episodes.
I'm so glad scenes from this show are posted! I was a senior in high school when this show aired, and after all these years, I'm still telling my kids how funny it was. My math teacher and I were the only ones who either saw it, or "got" it, and we used to laugh to the point of crying while talking about it the next day in class. I've never laughed so hard! Al and the banana-what a classic!
I love the "Stateville" prison running jokes. And Dreben makes a philosophical remark about dope after which the entire office falls down around him! FUNNY!
Wow, according to Wikipedia, this show lasted only 6 episodes? I remember watching Police Squad when it was on cable TV back in the 90's, great show! but ABC's excuse for canceling it after 6 episodes was stupid. Can't wait to get the complete series on DVD!
If this had lasted longer it would have been interesting to see if they had kept up the gag of naming all the crooks they had caught in the previous episodes
