@silvereith Apart from the vocals, which are slightly weaker (age will get you eventually) I don't see any difference. the band are as tight as ever, and the music is as good.
Who gives a shit about Richard Sinclair losing his hair..? The charm of Caravan lies in the quailty of the composition, musicianship and razor sharp lyrics. They were truly progressive band, unlike one of Richard's other bands, the much more pretentious Camel.
Richard Sinclair - great writer, great voice and fab bassist and yes music is the key to Caravan but you have to look at them as well don't you? That cap, those clothes!! He got it badly wrong here.
You have to admire these musicians - and many more like them. This is probably the zillionth time theyve played this great number - but it still sounds fresh as a daisy..... Bravo!
Impossible to compare this version of "For Richard" to the orginal played in 1969, owing to different instruments, especially keyboards section. Then there was a synth and a sturdy mellotron, instruments appearing in the line up of many prog rock bands of early 70's. Anyway, vocals are the same.
@tonkehar Listen to the words to this song. The picture it paints in your minds eye will blow your mind. The music and the words will take you away ( no joke) to another time and place, just awesome. (Remember to pay the sandman well). All the studio cuts are being pulled from u-tube, but don't cry.... just find the cd or vinyl.
47 likes and no dislikes! Love this kind of music. People might call it elitist, but what the heck. This sort of music deserves to be elitist! Also, so glad that he-who-must-not-be-named-disliked-parodied-cursed-etc has not been named!
Actually, he is wearing the cap because he was balding. I saw Richard in Milwaukee back when he did his Caravan of Dreams album. I had a beer with him afterwards and we talked for a while. He sang Winter Wine with Caravan -- that should be obvious from the voice.
Richard Sinclair is singing this as i am a big fan, and think if Prog wasn't invented Richard would have had to invent it as his voice almost sums up the genre..he also went on to join Camel and Hatfield and the North
Judging by their appearance, the date is early 90s. My guess is Richard is wearing the cap because, sadly enough, he probably was balding at the time (he's bald in later videos). Pye is on lead guitar, sings on For Richard, but not this. BTW, Dec. 3 (2010) Caravan is re-forming for the ITV Legends concert series to be filmed in London. The band's scheduled set: Memory Lain Hugh/Headloss, Why Why Why, Golf Girl, Smoking Gun, Unauthorised Breakfast Item, Nightmare and Nine Feet Underground.
@lavoratoredicorpo Lol, he was already balding long before this. Just check out any photos from the Raindances/ Breathless area Camel (or any live videos from their 'Moondances' show). His hairline was receding, but he combed it forward.
On a different subject, I wish Dave had brought his original organ used on this track instead of a digital keyboard.
@lavoratoredicorpo The funny thing is, he was already balding in the early seventies. If you check his work with Camel circa 1978, he had been losing hair for quite a while.

..sorry, but actually it's Pye Hastings singing and playing the bass.... Richard Sinclair was the keyboard player... and Pye was a golfer, so the cap is appropriate ( I suppose..)
@polperro This remains after almost 40 years my favourite ever track! This reminds me of Lord of The Rings which I was reading when this album first came out! Maybe the cover had something to do with it. Richard Sinclair's voice fits this music beautifully - see also Camel Hatfield and the North for this much underrated vocalist. Caravan set their own standards and I am grateful to them for a huge influence in my musical youth. I love Dave Sinclair's keyboards. Exquisite
@zenraga10 Don't talk bollocks Pye hastings on Bass? twat Pye was lead guitar, Yes Richard was on keyboards and this is David Sinclair singing, end of story, I know the band personnally.

@zenraga10 Dont talk bollocks Pye Hastings singing this? David Sinclair is the singer on this Richard is on keyboards, end of story, I know the band personally.Oh and Richard Coughlan is the drummer. just for the record.
@zenraga10 you are wrong. david played the keyboard and Richard played bass, but when this video was done it was much later during his Caravan of Dreams period and David wasn't with him. In his own band, Caravan of Dreams, he played a regular guitar. He told me when I talked to him after he played this song that he should have always played guitar, but got stuck playing bass with Hatfield etc.
oooooo, bravo, thank the lord jesus for prog. but, i dont really like how they just stand there, i can understand that they need to concentrate but maybe a lil bit of stage presence would be nice, anyways thanks for this vid, im always up for some new prog
That's because they are/were serious musicians. You don't see classical or jazz musicians "putting on a show." So it WAS with serious rock musicians, such as Genesis, Camel, Soft Machine. The music stands on it's own merit and not on any stage antics or dress style. Most of all: they didn't do that "how'm I doing - aren't I great?" look - which seperates the men from the boys.
No, that's absolutely true. Genesis NEVER "putting on a show". But WHO was this guy named Peter Gabriel. Didn't he belong to the band??? Didn't he "putting on a show"???
@Gruntol5 Well said man, well said. Have you by any chance seen a live video of Mark Knopfler? Exactly the same. I have a picture of him drinking lemon tea with a friend on stage in between songs, to help a bad throat. What "rockstar" does that today? Heck, what rockstar of the 90s era did that? Can you imagine Eddie Vedder, or Axl Rose doing it? While they made great songs, Knopfler, Sinclair are in a class of their own.
