  • lol, dang yall keep u on your FEET dont cha.. love this band to death but its to much OF A SHOW OFF..

  • smith or westover?? hmm.. how bout Hoke County!!! all other bands better watch out this year

  • lol hoke????WTF!!??!! nah yall was super wack last year when we str8 blew on yall at the game yall stole everything we do in the stands prime example "the wave" we do that all the time and yall stole it losers and at the parade last year when we played war and yall were standing right beside us wishing yall were doing what we do QUESTION:did yall even attempt to play back??.dont hate on us bcuz yall can get another ass whopping str8 up i dont think yall band diretor would put yall up again us.

  • Dang Smith Killed It At The End Lol

  • MMM and MSPH both blew the hell out of the arrangements played, but Westover took the sectionals hands down.... except the drumline. I cant call it on the Tuba section though..... that was a tough battle

  • SMITH OR WESTOVER ///////??????

  • Sorry everybody.... BUT----> this was a jamboree, meaning absolutely NO JUDGES! This was a crowd pleasing event.... We came full force, but when it came down to the sectionals..... NEED I SAY MORE? LoL..... ok, for the slow ppl, MSPH came out on top!

  • That wasn't a reply for you but was directed at the Chalmerk person. The WC was Westside Cheryl. Sorry about the confusion.

  • As far as my drumline @ Smith goes.... the rivalry is still there! Blue Ice will always be the #1 Rival on the list. At the same time, the rivalry is only to be exposed at the right moments.... such as, The Smith/Westover game or any Parade in Cumberland County! Now take this in for a thought...... why would we go to an out-of-town event just to battle our hometown rivals....? That can be done @ home am I right? When we both go out of town, we need to be representing our hometown.

  • I was wondering the same thing, that's why I asked the question about Dillon on the other video.

  • The bigger picture is this jamboree was basically a black event, no fights and everyone went home a winner unlike a competition when everyone is all tense and robotic. Now I am aware of what the academic situations are at both schools and due to the strict guidelines for marching, most if not all of these kids are making their grades. Let them have their fun. It was a thrill to see the featured sax soloists and the trombone player show their skills. I can't hear that in a competition!

  • Oh my gosh people, what kind of a world do you think this is? No rivalry? Look at the bigger picture? How about this picture Carolina vs Duke, Ohio State vs Michigan, Lakers vs Celtics, Cowboys vs Redskins, hell ATT vs Verizon, there is always going to be rivalry and competition. The difference is you can teach your kids you can be rivals but at the end of the day you are ALL great musicians. This would not be an issue if certain sections weren't exposed

  • You are entitled to your opinion but rivalry is not a bad thing, it's motivation for most to practice. When a student is at practice, that is a lot safer than being in the streets.Bands punch against each other. If your child is lucky enough to attend any college(white or black) and belong to the band, they will experience it again. I personally like the fact Westover hosted this instead of a competition. I have seen enough of those. I have seen MMM and MSPH show so much I can do it in the dark

  • LOL....point made and proven, The jamboree is good for our city/county! It gives our audience a chance to see how competitive band really is. EE Smith never really gets a chance to end up in a punch situation! Football games dont count to us since we always have to modify our songs or punches thanks to "LIVE BALL"

  • Some may take it as you are adding to the rivalry because you felt you had to say something to WC...

  • WC as in West Charlotte.....?

  • New flash people, Westover vs Smith is a love hate relationship and some take it better than others. Just this year I went back and forth with a member of Smith's drumline and tolerated comments such as MMM saxes made MSPH saxes look like middle schoolers (which in all actuality, the middle schoolers were on MMM). I took it as someone who loves their band and was just defending it.... I have to agree with W.C. on this one, its alumni as well as current, but its friendly most of the time

  • Everyone has their own opinions. I am a grown woman with stuff to do. I can't spend any more time going back and forth with you all on these issues. Like I have said before I wish all bands in Cumberland County the best of luck. Especially our 2 black High Stepping Bands. If we don't support us then who will? They most definately won't. I know of quite a few people who would love to see both of our schools closed. We have to support each other, that's all I'm saying.

  • I have reviewed the videos and it does come from both. Check the percussion videos especially.... It really does not matter too much where it comes from, they are both great bands

  • Yea both bands have a different swag. And most of the conflict kinda do come from the Alumni or adults.... from my experiences! I havent seen any of our own sayin anything out of line... I could be wrong though!

  • There would not be a comment section if no one was to comment. People support what they love as well as defend. There has been a rivalry (as it should be) between the schools. Each school keeps the other on point and people do work hard to keep it friendly.

  • You should never teach the kids rivalry. That is what is wrong with them now. Someone might take that to the next level or the wrong level. Both bands are always on point just because they both go to competitions. That's the only reason to be on point. To pit the kids against each other is wrong. They should be learning from each other whenever they get the chance. There is a much bigger picture than being in a high school band. It is suppose to teach them structure and much more.

  • I don't think rivalry 101 is taught in any household or school, it's just there. It can also be healthy motivation.

I know rivalries can turn into hate but don't believe it's that in this case. But at the end of the day, we will just have to disagree.

  • Please let me say this, I like both bands and I have an interest in EE Smith. We want to see both bands succeed. I think all of the rivalry is mostly between the adults. I as a parent of a EE Smith bandsman think this should be a most memorable experience for both bands. It really doesn't matter who is best. They are different bands with different sounds. But because we have been around so long we are cheated out of alot of things. I wish everyone a great up coming season!

  • Smith should hire an auxillary coach for the 09-10 season.

  • coach quit early in da season... issues... lol

  • Well all good things must come to an end, Perhaps a fresh start is needed for both. When I was in school and Smith was the only showband band the girls were the bomb. I think they were called the Golden girls, They were not many in number but they were great.

  • Appreciate the positive comment! They are still called the golden girls... i dont know why they so deep now a days.

  • You should apply. Let's see what you bring to the table.

  • Sorry, I am already involved with a marching band. Due to time restraints, I would not be able to take on any additional duties. I also apologize that you took what I said personally. If you would review, the need for the coach is so the young ladies can match the level of the band to enhance it.

Also, don't feel like the "Lone Ranger" when it comes to being cheated. We may have a shorter history but we are well aware what that is all about,

  • Thanks again for the offer though.....

  • I did not take what you said personally. I do feel the same way. We have had problems with the coaches for the last 2 years. Maybe this year we'll have better luck.

  • Yea we do keep things pretty strict. But on a Friday night you can hear the vets hittin them notes if you really pay attention but we dont have any good Friday nights posted. About being robotic, we are The Magnificent Marching Machine. We have to live up to that theme.

  • lilchris227, regardless of what people say, it is all love between us and Smith. We respect your tradition. We just have different styles, yet we are both showbands. Smith was the only one for like forever. Now there are two in town. There is nothing wrong with that.

  • Oh yes oh yes... we gotta put on for our city like Jeezy said, lol! Its all love coming from both sides of town. We also have to give love to Fay. State too, especially since they made it to the Honda BOTB this year! I went and they actually did better than expected! So there are 3 bands, and 2 bands coming up in the game...Hoke and Pine Forest.... I just see it as more competition....more fun!

  • Definitely keeps everyone on point so it's all good!

  • Well, I will look for that at the next Smith vs Westover game.

  • Again, do what works for you. Just a different perspective from another person. I wish you nothing but success

  • I would not say the music make it less exciting to a crowd. The full presentation makes it exciting! Either way I still got love for both bands. Hopefully we can get more competition to come through Fayetteville cause I dont see EES & WHS as a battle anymore, its too repetitive to us thats why me and Jeff put the 2 drumlines together!

  • I like your music(nothing wrong with that) but your presentation gets boring sometimes. I know whatever spot you start in you won't do too much to stray from that area. That works well for competitions but would like to see you step it up on a Friday night and be less robotic. (I love your drumline they never disappoint) I know the band seems to do alot of "safe things" and that can get boring. I also look straight at the musicians because the auxillary needs work.

  • Its sorta like we are being patronized by our swag. I know there is a difference between a band w/ a diff swag and a band w/ a scratchy sound.

  • well Mr. Chris, if you feel that works best for your band, continue. You guys are very clean. It's just a little less exciting sometimes.

  • I dont know... it bothers me to hear people say our trumpets dont take thier notes up! We have a good clean trumpet section with good range! 1st trumpets are not supposed to outnumber the 2nds and 3rds, thats what we were told!

  • Actually, your first trumpet part was really a 2nd trumpet part in most band, and your 3rd trumpet part really should have been given to middle brass, so in essence you are leaving an entire voice void because of your arranging. I spoke with Slocumb about it, and he admitted that the arraignments have been dumbed down, or rather are less complicated. He told me that he was told to do it that way. So it is not so much about balance of sound as much as it is simplified arraignments.

  • i dont know about other bands but if it is a simplified version its a damn good one plus who can argue with the execution. We hear the song pretty good and its clean.

  • I never said that it was not good or clean. I just said that it was simple. Look at the very first post that I wrote about this performance. It was very good and very clean, but also very simple. Just like the flag girls routine, it was good, clean, and very very simple. Do you ever watch diving or gymnastics? Athletes get points based on how clean the execution was, and on the level of difficulty. All I am saying is that the level of difficulty is low. Your own asst. director told me.

  • the whole thing was excellent 2 me put on was great and the trombones was suppose 2 have that little gliss that sound so good and foolish was sumthin new so i think it was all great

  • I dont care what anybody says but please comment on our FOOLISH and PUT ON!

  • I liked the Foolish! It was different, hadn't heard it much from bands this year... I am Put On out this year lol.....

  • I was feeling the Foolish, but the Put On musically was way too simple. Got back and listen to Westover's version during our 5 minute funk session. The Smith version fails to utilize their trumpet section. There is not enough contrast in the voices. It is like the trumpets are playing it safe and not attempting to play high notes. The melody should have featured screaming trumpets was carried by middle brass - trumbones, and baritones. Just listen to ours to hear what I am talking about.

  • Smith is not better than westover.bottom line.they're real good though so leave it at that.

  • Someone has anger issues!!!

  • WATEVA WE WILL SEE YALL SUCK AZZ LOL

  • not

  • WE R SO BETTER THEN WESTOVER

  • Clearly you go to Smith, I bet you got an A in English writing like that. Nevertheless, all of these videos are proof positive that Smith is no where near as good as Westover. No to be fair, your percussion and Tubas are the truth, but everything else is um, shall I say, disappointing.

  • Good job smith

  • Do they really need all of those dances? I mean damn they are almost the size of the band. But anyways nice mix of songs

  • smith always hold it dwn and how dey killed gucci bandana dats sumthin only smith can do

  • West Charlotte did Gucci Bandana this year too

  • Look up West Charlotte band please. Trust me, its there. They did at Gotham

  • Good eyes picc! I knew something was familiar!!!

  • Hoke County falls down at the end too. Same position

  • Hoke's new director was an assistant director at Smith last year.

  • Good Job Tubas!!!!

  • I am Westover for life, but I have to admit that I love how hype Smith's band always is. Mr. Pratt and Mr. Slocomb do a great job with them. They always put on a great show.

  • thanks :-)
