Starting @ 6:11 the smoke reaching up through the lights combining with the keyboard is rather entrancing. Then you start hearing human voices killing the ambiance that was beginning to build. Cool concert anyway; wish I'd been.
I had a couple of friends who liked to say Faith No More have been more influential than Nirvana. I know they have been for me, but I thought I was in the minority on that.
Actually, Jim had very little to do with the writing of Angel Dust (aside from Jizzlobber, notably), which is corroborated by various interviews of the time. See if you can find the 2-DVD interview raw footage that MTV shot while they were in the studio, TONS of great material there about the making of a classic record.

Yea bring back Jim....even though he only helped right one song on Angel Dust....which happens to be this one. Why do you think they fired him? He wouldn't work with them, not the other way around. Thats where the hatin on Jim came from. Read 'Faith No More: The Real Story' sometime.
jim had very little input in angel dust. granted he wrote this song, which is one of my favourite songs, but that's it. im my opinion fnm's best album is angel dust, then kfad/ffalt, then album of the year, THEN the real thing, then the others with chuck. jim was cool but didnt actually do much except make the band internally fight. im getting sick of people saying its not a real reunion unless jim is there. when i found out fnm reunited it was the happiest day of my life, regardless of jim.
Jim is undoubtely unique and unrepeatable. He had that "dont know what" that separated him from other guitarists. He was like Iommy, but more evil!!! The only replacement capable of living up to his style was Trey Spruance. John Hudson is too "light" for FNM, in my opinion. Maybe they should have continued with Dean Menta after Treys departure.
Incredible! And Jim's last show eh? This song has those crazy parts with the death metal influence, such a great song, shame it seemed the crowd was kind of sedated here. Unbelievable performance, FNM, maybe the most underrated band ever. Legends!
Jim actually contributed very little to Angel Dust. Billy wrote most of the guitar stuff. The only things Jim had a hand in was Kindergarten and he wrote all of Jizzlobber. Not knocking JIm, just sayin'
but don't your ears tell you that billy was emulating jims style? meaning that they liked what he did?... listen to midlife crisis, or smaller and smaller, or everythings ruined, or a small victory... all the songs on angel dust are jims style of playing.. billy wrote the songs emulating jims style. it wasn't till trey joined when their sound changed drastically and all traces of jim were gone.
by jim leaving, we gained a lot as fans, but possibly lost more...
Anyone who thinks Angel Dust would have been as dark as it was without Patton's influence is simply delusional. Anyone who thinks they didn't rawk again after Martin's expulsion hasn't heard 'Gentle Art of Making Enemies'. The real tragedy is that Trey Spruance and Mike Patton couldn't co-exist any longer in FNM or Bungle, wish they'd just get it over with and fuck already.
sure angel dust would have been dark without patton.. angel dust is a dark and stellar album no doubt, but their debut album we care a lot is darker and moodier.
And you're crazy if you think Patton is expendable too, the singing and lyrics on that album are nothing short of inspirational. I can't commend Angel Dust enough!
I think Jim is a big reason why Angel Dust is their strongest and most enjoyable album. The tone of the guitar is so rich and the choice of the chords and understated, tasteful solos are just perfect.
Such a shame they didn't stay together to progress in Angel Dust's progressive direction, it's afucking great album.
@lawlesr666 Jim wrote this song beginning to end, including lyrics, and it was his big f*** you to the band on his way out. It's a shame he couldn't handle the idea of the guitar not being the center of focus in the band anymore, but that doesn't diminish his writing ability one iota.
@TheMetalChefOnline you are wrong, mike write this sing "with"him, but not really because later on mike saith that this song was 100% composed by him, i think he only did say he composed with him to make fun of jim
@grez14 Well, if the only guy who is even suspected of having a songwriting credit says he didn't write any of it, then I'm inclined to believe that Jim wrote the whole song. Either way, it's a kick-ass tune, and Jim was largely behind it.
Personally, I'm inclined to believe that Angel Dust is as strong as it turned out because Mike actually got to put his $0.02 into the songwriting, while Jim was still in the band. I think they were weaker without Jim, but they were pretty terrible before Mike, and that was with Jim. Perhaps the two forces colliding were what made this one of the greatest metal albums of all time.
@GestureStew Sorry man, but Jim was on few songs on that album, Kindergarden and Jizzlobber (albeit great songs) are the only ones he recorded on, Billy played guitar for the majority of the sessions. Plus he contributed little to no music in writing the the album, and most other things he wrote weren't good enough, or it wasn't bringing FNM as a group to were they wanted to be. As Mike said "We had to get rid of him to survive", they were making no progress with Jim Martin in the band.
"Ooh, uh, yeah. I'm going to have to go ahead and sort of disagree with
you there."
I too find Angel Dust their best album, however Jim Martin's contribution to it was rather slim. I like Big Jim's guitar playing most of the times, don't get me wrong, however he probably didn't like the change in focus from his guitar playing to Mike's vocals. Consequently, on Angel Dust, besides this awesome song right here, he did not contribute to anything at all.
@GestureStew you are nuts dude. Billy Gould recorded ALL the guitars of Angel Dust, except for this and Caffeine....the guitar tone was SHIT also. King for a Day...Fool for a Lifetime was the better album.
Dont get me wrong, I loved Jim actitude, he was a great guitar player, but he was a lame ass.
@GestureStew It's a bit of a well known secret that Bill Gould played most of the guitar on Angel Dust, hence the guitar solos that were nowhere near as complex as the stuff Jim done on Anne's Song (for example) or most of the Real Thing album.

Jim is fucking overrated.
I mean, I kinda like him and really appreciate his work @ FNM, but he barely didn't give any contribution to Angel Dust, and the album is simply brilliant and influential anyway. I just don't understand whysome people associate FNM's "fall" with his departure...
Thanks Big Sick Jim for keepin it real, metal heavy and allowing Patten to flourish. Watching FNM live, in the early 90's, was truely an awesome experience. The crazy electic riffs complemented FNM unique sound and pushed them above the rest. Where did the metal sound go? Too bad Patten didn't get it.
"Old"..?! Mike isn't even 42 until January and he's constantly joking that he's old, but I think it's just paranoia about aging and losing his good looks. He still looks and sounds just as good as he did in the 1990s.
for lack of a better term, I would just call this a love song. A mike patton love song. He talks about commitment and flinging semen on someone. It doesn't get any more loving than that...
odd maybe, but great song. Disqueting lyrics too. I've always wandered what it is about. Maybe an unwanted pregnancy(bars in the womb)?
By the way, Patton did an amazing version of "Angel Eyes" in Barcelona with Tomahawk. So he can be a hell of a crooner, too (see also "this guy's in love with you").
the song describes murdering someone and then hiding them under your mattress before sleeping over them. amazingly most people that hide a body under the bed sleep on the bed after doing so.
I've racked my brain for years trying to work out what this song could be about and the only thing I can come up with about this song is the second verse I get the feeling it's about a victim of rape. I know it sounds bad but if you read the lyrics it just resembles that, I could be wrong it's just my interpreation
It's about the mental breakdown of being an adult actor. Life is just a dirty, pointless, soul-less, existence. The mental abuse of taking something "special" or "sacred" to the human mind and spoiling it by personal and/or self exploitation thus rendering it a dark, unhappy, dirty, hateful, thing. It's just what I read in an interview with FNM back in the day!
I think the people who "THINK" the warfield performance of this is better only think that because it sounds more like the cd version. With a song like this I want it be as absolutely crazy as fucking possible. And if it goes off the track a little, who cares. They've not doing a cover of a Frank Sinatra song, it a ridiculous, odd (hopefully screamy) song called "JIZZLOBBER".
Mike Patton is one of the most talented rock singers of all time. There's no doubt about. Another thing I really appreciate is his outrageous and unpredictable conduct on stage. I suggest anyone to check what Mike did during Jizzlobber @ PalaTrussardi in Milano (Italy), 1992 .
I've never seen something like that before! FNM FOREVER!
I have the entire Warfield show on VHS. I know about the back flips. But speaking of just his voice, this performance is unprecedented. So is this whole show. Best Faith No More gig of all time - by far.
Considering Mike's vocal performance and excellent sound quality this is the best FNM gig on youTube. You're right! In the middle of this song Patton seems to be possessed, he's totally out of control. And he does back flip in the last track (Epic) too.
At 4:42, the only thing missing is a straitjacket! What a monster vocalist. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but this might have been the last time the band played this song. That might be why Mike is losing his mind - he knows they will never play this again because it's Jim's song and they knew they were kicking him out of the band.
This is the Jim Martin' last show, not the last time they played 'Jizzlobber'. They played it again in Manchester on March 11, 1995. If you think this is the best performance of this song take a look to what Mike Patton did at the Warfield Theatre in 1992. Bye
This song makes me feel alive every time i here it. Mike realy give it his all every show they played around 92-93, and his performance of this song is unbelieveable. They can keep that shitty emo music, this band were the only band worth listening too back in the 90's and probably the only band worth listening too today
OH yes! The best version of this tune ever!! Mike's vocal reminds me of the end of David Lynch's "Lost Highway" where Fred is going insane. Thumbs WAY up for this one. Thanks very, very, very much for posting this show!!
Nice 1. I was at this festival back in '93. Absolutely amazing especially this track, it left the crowd stunned. This was without doubt the best I ever saw FNM perform - fitting really as it was Jim's last.
This video gives me an erection. LOVE IT!

Mike Patton was as volatile as antimatter when on stage. Goddamn, what a maniacal performance.

There will be no better lineup of FNM like this one, no better FNM album than Angel Dust, an no better song than this one.

Bye

Incredible. Makes me wish I was 10 years older so I could have seen this live.

This song makes me feel alive every time i here it. Mike realy give it his all every show they played around 92-93, and his performance of this song is unbelieveable. They can keep that shitty emo music, this band were the only band worth listening too back in the 90's and probably the only band worth listening too today

My favorite piece of music from FNM. And this version is the best!
