Guys, I used to go to this church. It's a great place. He doesn't have half the gadgets other churches have because he knows that God's church doesn't really need them. So what if he inherited a big building with a big congregation, does that make him a bad pastor? Absolutely not. He is a god-fearing man, and he reads straight from the Bible. He has inspired so many people to go out into the world and preach the good news. We all should do the same with our lives.
Why do people complain about a megachurch? Should they put a limit on how many people they let in? Christ had thousands following him on foot...should he have turned them away saying there is too many? However, why am i shocked? If you don't know Christ then there is no way you can understand. What you should try to wrap your mind around is that the "church" is not the building, It's the people. We are the church. Put us in a tent and we'll worship the same.

ad hominem is an attempt to negate the truth of a claim by pointing out a negative characteristic or belief of the person supporting it. This is known as a logical fallacy. David Platt is an imperfect person radically following a perfect one.
I agree with his message. Now, has he given up everything himself, or does he have a huge megachurch with parking problems and a coffee bar? (and yes, that's relevant to the discussion if someone's pointing to the example of Christ but not following it himself. Beams in eyes, etc.)
@nhprman Who is righteous? no not one says the Lord. But... the point is, someone has to give the message.. don't you think? if we try to shut these pastors mouths up... who is good enough to preach the word then?

@nhprman well that would be relevant if he used pronouns like "you" or "they" when explaining what the bible says, but he includes himself in this by saying "we" and "us". Just want to throw in my 2 cents?...many if not most people do not want God & will criticize anything that challenges thier 'gods' esp selves. Its refreshing to see someone esp. so young whom seems to really want to follow & be a disicple of Jesus...
Tough! And OUCH! Folks respond negatively when they do not like this and would rather have a jesus of their own making and in turn worship that...Look at those that are being stripped naked, beaten over and over, starved, in cold and heat and brutal work camps because they believed Jesus and confessed Him before men.
Like all stances you will get both sides. As you have detractors of the bible you will usually notice that whoever that may be has not read the bible and looked into it. When I first read Radical, I had a knee jerk reaction. I have now read 4 times and studied in depth WOW. Read chpt 7 over and over if you have not. My prayer is for all to pray-read-study-pray-read-study with both the book and your bible. Then ACT upon it.
Our church is going to do the Book Study I am eager to see what this book has to offer ,Because the book we are reading now CRAZY LOVE is just as Good as this one .
SusDgs......... Im praying for you that you dont focus on the finacial part of teaching, but the relation you have with God. Unfortunatly I do see your side but also know that eachone of us will stand before God and be judged on our actions and not our judgement. Find a church that God gives you eyes to see the fruits that are being harvested. This sometimes takes money to do things like camp for kids and camp for adults for that matter. We need 2 start saying yes to his yes and not to our wants
These men are all about money, and who benefits? Them. I drive a 15 year old car, and no I will not sell it, and I don't go to church anymore since it was hijacked by the Rick Warrens, Perry Nobles, and this Platt guy types. I refuse to follow false "teachers".
He actually gave 1.8 million dollars of the churchs money to the poor. He bearly lives in a house. Has given much to the dying world, has adopted 2 kids, and even bashes his own church during his sermons. Trust me bro, this guy practices what he preaches.
Is HE selling all that pricey stuff we can see in the background? Has he given every dime he s making from his book? Has He sold HIS house, car, His clothes? Hypocrits have taken over the church and the bible warns against these men.
When Platt mentions 'giving up everything', he is referring to specific passage in the new testament ...conversations between Jesus and specific people desiring to follow Him...not everyone is called to sell all their possessions, etc...but we are called to be willing to...for a true Christian, a follower of Christ, our greatest love should be Jesus...not money or possessions or self...
Another leader, who like Paul Washer, and like Francis Chan, "gets it." They just get the core of what the Gospel is, who Jesus is, and what "Christianity" is all about.
Christianity has not "deteriorated" in this country. Quite the contrary, books like Platt's "Radical" and Chan's "Crazy Love" are signals of revival! Now if only I can individually adopt and integrate major changes in my own living and heart.
The New Testament's... Matthew, Mark, Luke and John... Jesus had 12 hand-picked apostles... Matthew and John were of these apostles... Luke and Mark were not... Didn't Constantine compile the books of the bible... hmmmm?
He is totally missing the point... By his line of reasoning, we should all ditch our children and become preachers. He advocates pursuing God for the selfish reward of being in his presence. Not, being empowered by the holy spirit to help others, like your family and those in need. God sustains Jesus, Jesus sustains us, we sustain our children. Therefore, God sustains us all. We must play our part. That is sacrifice. Not running away from helping your family.

"if anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters-yes, even his own life-he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not pick up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple."
Jesus is saying that your love for people and worldly things can never be in compairison to the love you should have for him. Keep an open heart. This guy speaks truth strait from the Lord
That empty church could probably house a lot of homeless people... That pullover looks really warm... honor your mother and father don't hate them... this man does not practice what he preaches... he wants you to follow him.
@Insidapc He actually gave 1.8 million dollars of the churchs money to the poor. He bearly lives in a house. Has given much to the dying world, has adopted 2 kids, and even bashes his own church during his sermons. Trust me bro, this guy practices what he preaches. (btw he came to that church after it was built it hasnt had any re-adjustments nor have they added anything because he keeps on giving to much of the churches money to even give a decent salary to anyone who works there)
Dear Swiss cheese hole...You are not getting it..so what if he does live in big fancy house...I bet his heart is not into the type of house he lives in or what he drives..you are right when you say you dont know..you never know someones heart and where their priorities are. He may give a lot to others...we are not the judge
@algerville I understand that I am not the judge of his heart or intentions, but how can you just say "his heart is not into the type of house he lives in"? That almost seems like an excuse, I could say that for anything. I could preach peace with an AK47 strapped to my chest "just in case," doesn't that seem to take away from my message? Even just a little? The thing about Jesus is that He actually lived what He preached, and required/requires His disciples to do the same.
Does anyone else find it ironic that he is talking about all this stuff from the inside of what seems to be a mega-church facility? Or at least a large, Americanized, form of a church? Just sayin.
@swisscheesehole read the book, you'll find out how he came about to being the pastor of this church. and he doesnt say mega churches are bad, he says that the desire to have a huge church being a priority is bad, he teaches this in his church and actually has missionaries going out of that church. so its not wrong to have a huge church, its just that now a days, pastors with huge churches want even bigger churches, and don't teach what we should be doing according to the bible
@chewerz Well maintaining that size of a church has to be some sort of priority in his mind. He is not going to be willing to stop paying the bills and risk losing the building, people, income, etc. I agree with what he is saying, and I can appreciate what you are saying, its just that I don't like hearing these sort of things from preachers in mega-churches. It makes me wonder what kind of house/ neighborhood he lives in - does he actually live among the poor? I guess I don't know.
he talks a lot aout how he thinks Americans misallocate funds towards big churches, such as the one he pastors.....that is why i believe he gave away their reserve fund of 1.8 million dollars
I heard David on the radio a few days ago and really connected with what he said so I looked him up here. Thank God I did. David speaks the TRUTH, and I believe it's from his heart. God bless you brother; keep fighting the good fight.
Americans don't worship God. They worship themselves. They worship money. They worship capital. They worship their own possessions. Sure, there are people like Sam Childers and Saul Alinsky who were ready to give up everything to help someone other than themselves. But that's them. How about you?
Were studying his book, "Radical", in our College/Career Class right now. I find that he uses lots of words to prove a simple point, just to fill a chapter.
What a breath of fresh air. I'm a Catholic but I recognize a true disciple of Jesus when I see one. May God bless you and keep you strong in the faith.
truth! I used to belong to a megachurch with the prosperity message. they twist the bible to fit their needs to say "God is going to make you a millionaire" all the time.
everywhere i turned, someone was "starting a business" to "get what God has in store for them"
blah blah blah, bless me, enlarge my territory, blessed in the city, blessed in the fields, blessed when we come and when we go, blah blah blah - always me, me, me.
From 1:13-1:20 in the video, David breaks down the meaning behind the hate verse (Luke 14:26) that everybody is tripping on.
Here are his exact words, "He tells us that to follow him means giving him our affection and our love in a way that makes our closest relationships in this world look like hate."
Jesus is drawing a comparison here so that we can understand the depths of devotion and love he wants and desires from us if we are going to follow him.
all is know is Jesus said what he said and ment everyword He said, He does not lie hebrews 6. Dont water His words down and create cafeteria christianity
"at this point we are starting to redefine christianity according to our preferences and what is comfortable to us". Isn't this the only thing you can do with someone is imaginary? Isn't this all religion just making people up to how they want them to act. What a silly guy.
@Fmarion66666 We are not talking about Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy here. Jesus was a real human being. His life and death are documented historical facts that even most atheists and believers in other religions do not challenge, even if they do not agree with his claims of deity. "...essentially all scholars in the relevant fields agree that the mere historical existence of Jesus can be established using documentary and other evidence." - Wikipedia - Historicity of Jesus
@stephendverner his life and death are documented hearsay, please tell me in what other situation ever can you consider hearsay facts? Any legitimate scholar considering documents based on hearsay as fact is a loon and you need to do some research. I dont deny that the existence of Jesus as too far fetched but it's absolutely nothing I'd bet money on. Also I'd like to know who you consider "most atheists", I can surely tell you a lot who don't really know nor care, it wouldn't matter regardless
@Fmarion66666 Documented heresy, what's that? What documents are in question that you are labeling heresy? It's funny that Jesus' disciples walked with him for over 3 years. If anyone would have known he was a fake then they would have. They would have had to keep up the charade, right? However, 10 or the 12 died horrible deaths because of his claims. Thousands if not millions more have died, are dying, & are still willing to die for it.
@Fmarion66666 Anyway, it really doesn't matter what we say here, because we are not going to change the other's mind. Only, I am curious why an atheist like yourself, who does not know or does not care about Jesus and thinks it does not matter anyway is sniffing around youtube for religious videos like this one?
What is the foundation for your decision making process? How did you arrive at your strongly held position against Jesus?
@stephendverner never give up. God hasn't. Atheists (?) do change, I have witnessed many times & many time it was on a death bed, but they changed because someone cared enough to pray for them & continued to reach out to them all of their life. The fact that @Fmarion66666 is here would indicate that he has doubts, that he wouldn't admit to right now, be kind in your responses & pray for his soul. We are all going to live for eternity, the differents is where do you want to spend that eternity.
In my translation it says "Love jesus more" or something to that point. I don't think he is wrong for the way he said it, I just think that there is a less confusing way to go about getting your point across. Jesus would never tell us to hate another human being. Hate sin. He calls us to love others, but I understand his point. Anyone read the book? Worth the buy? Sounds very intriguing.
@ipeegreatness34 really great book and sermon series that is on his podcast. the truth about your translation is that it has done the very thing that he is talking about. im guess NLT, im not sure. dont know greek, but ive been told from people that know greek say that the wording there means hate. the translators put in their own interpretation instead of just translating. this is not the place to discuss pros and cons of different translations
@ipeegreatness34 but us as comfortable americans and humans try to take the boldness and radicalness out of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. we know that Jesus doesnt mean that we should hate people in the same way that we should hate sin BUT there is a reason why Christ worded it the way he did. to show us that our love for him should be so extravagant that our love for others should look like hate in comparrison. there is a really good sermon series on his podcast.
I really agree with a lot of what he's saying. I myself am very guilty of doing so. America is very guilty of doing so, for example, Jesus is my homeboy. Not that this is sinful to say, or anything like that, i'm not religious I see the love behind it, but when saying that we are really downplaying what Jesus did for us on the cross! Anyways, aside from that, the only thing I don't agree with is the way he said "hate your mother father etc etc." I actually just read that last night.
About 9 months ago I started to really take Christ seriously in my life and put him first. Then I heard Dr. David Platt give a sermon on LUKE 14:26. Apparently I can’t be a disciple of Jesus unless I hate my mother, father, bother, sister, wife and children. I can’t do that, so, I guess that means I don’t have what it takes to be a real Christian.
Thank you Dr. David Platt for showing me what complete and total contradictory non-sense Christianity is.
@1manwolfpak01 Okay. ... i saw this too and my heart sunk. I love my family so much. When I heard David Platt say "he calls us to hate our mother, father, husband, etc. i was completely confused. but then i just listened to the video again and again and he says, our love is to be so strong with Jesus, that in comparison our closest relationships look like hate. so we don't have to love our family less, just Jesus SOOOOOO much more
@layneylu I’ve looked into this some more. Not every Bible translation uses the word hate, some translate it as “Love Jesus more than” which makes total sense. There is not a good English equivalent for the Greek word used in the Gospel which is why interpretations vary. David implies that we can’t interpret Jesus's words differently, but we have to interpret to some degree, these words where written in a different language. I just don't like the way he's using this verse.
@1manwolfpak01 a word in greek still has meaning. the translation that say "loves jesus more that" are actually doing what he is talking about. they are removing the sharp edge of the radical statements of christ. in an effort to explain a verse, they dont translate but interpret the text, thus putting and editor and the mind of the translator between us and the author who wrote the text. words are tranlated. to a different language. meaning is interpreted.
@1manwolfpak01 Did you not watch the entire video?? He clearly states in 1:07 that this verse means that, compared to our relationship with Christ, our other relationships should LOOK like hate. He reads Greek, and understands the meaning behind the phrase. It means we must love Jesus more than our family, and compared to our love for Jesus, our love for our family is nothing. It shouldn't comepare with our love for Jesus. It's frightening that you're denying this biblical truth.
@layneylu that's Luke 14. "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. 27And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple." Jesus is saying that we have to leave loyalty to our families and give it to Jesus. We can't keep family first and Jesus second or family and Jesus at equal level. In thelaterparablesJesusrelatesthisverseto nothavingastrongfoundation
Thank you SO much. This still is confusing to me, the phrase "hate" .. but I'm very happy you gave a verse with it. This makes me really want to read the book
@layneylu it shows later in the vid he is saying you need to love him sooo much that it is as much difference as in love and hate,i was lucky enough to have him speak at my student life camp,Which i got saved at :).He said the exact same thing about hating your family and his exact words were,i know all of your jaws just dropped but what im saying here is that your loved for eathly things should not compare with how much you love jesus. Hope this helps
@layneylu hey i was confused to but i googled it lol and its in luke 14:26..what He means is to hate their lifestyle their sin not them. Love your mother father brother sister wife huband love them just hate their ungodly lifestlye and your own lifestyle
@Dormaninth14 thats a good thought but david actually explains it in this video. it means to love Jesus so much and to give Him so much praise that your love for friends and family would seem like hate in comparison to your love for God
@Dormaninth14 it actually means to love God and worship Him as he deserves sooo much that the relationship with your family will look like hate in comparison... like Love Him sooo much that it is clearly a true love and outlasts all other possible love in relationships.
the crazy thing is, even though david is an amazing teacher/preacher, its not him making this known to us. its the Holy Spirit in him and us and someone finally started to listen. ive just recently started reading and this is now my 5th book and makes it 4 out of the 5 talking about this "radical" living, which means God is trying to wake his people up or as Rev 2:5 says, He will remove his lampstand from us. meaning no more light to the world. let tht not be us.
Amen, bless uuuuuuuuuuu... We need 2 b RADICAL RIGHT NOW... Follow Jesus not the world.. kb

Tough!

Is HE selling all that pricey stuff we can see in the background? Has he given every dime he s making from his book? Has He sold HIS house, car, His clothes? Hypocrits have taken over the church and the bible warns against these men.
SusDgs 1 year ago
@SusDgs have you given up everything? Can you call him a hypocrit? if you haven't done those things, don't talk bad about him.
unnoneuser2 1 year ago

By the grace of GOD!

@Insidapc Jesus actually says exactly that:
"if anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters-yes, even his own life-he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not pick up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple."
Jesus is saying that your love for people and worldly things can never be in compairison to the love you should have for him. Keep an open heart. This guy speaks truth strait from the Lord

Dear Swiss cheese hole...You are not getting it..so what if he does live in big fancy house...I bet his heart is not into the type of house he lives in or what he drives..you are right when you say you dont know..you never know someones heart and where their priorities are. He may give a lot to others...we are not the judge
algerville 1 year ago
@algerville I understand that I am not the judge of his heart or intentions, but how can you just say "his heart is not into the type of house he lives in"? That almost seems like an excuse, I could say that for anything. I could preach peace with an AK47 strapped to my chest "just in case," doesn't that seem to take away from my message? Even just a little? The thing about Jesus is that He actually lived what He preached, and required/requires His disciples to do the same.
swisscheesehole 1 year ago
Does anyone else find it ironic that he is talking about all this stuff from the inside of what seems to be a mega-church facility? Or at least a large, Americanized, form of a church? Just sayin.
swisscheesehole 1 year ago
@swisscheesehole read the book, you'll find out how he came about to being the pastor of this church. and he doesnt say mega churches are bad, he says that the desire to have a huge church being a priority is bad, he teaches this in his church and actually has missionaries going out of that church. so its not wrong to have a huge church, its just that now a days, pastors with huge churches want even bigger churches, and don't teach what we should be doing according to the bible
chewerz 1 year ago
@chewerz Well maintaining that size of a church has to be some sort of priority in his mind. He is not going to be willing to stop paying the bills and risk losing the building, people, income, etc. I agree with what he is saying, and I can appreciate what you are saying, its just that I don't like hearing these sort of things from preachers in mega-churches. It makes me wonder what kind of house/ neighborhood he lives in - does he actually live among the poor? I guess I don't know.

@Fmarion66666 We are not talking about Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy here. Jesus was a real human being. His life and death are documented historical facts that even most atheists and believers in other religions do not challenge, even if they do not agree with his claims of deity. "...essentially all scholars in the relevant fields agree that the mere historical existence of Jesus can be established using documentary and other evidence." - Wikipedia - Historicity of Jesus
stephendverner 1 year ago
@stephendverner his life and death are documented hearsay, please tell me in what other situation ever can you consider hearsay facts? Any legitimate scholar considering documents based on hearsay as fact is a loon and you need to do some research. I dont deny that the existence of Jesus as too far fetched but it's absolutely nothing I'd bet money on. Also I'd like to know who you consider "most atheists", I can surely tell you a lot who don't really know nor care, it wouldn't matter regardless
Fmarion66666 1 year ago
@Fmarion66666 Documented heresy, what's that? What documents are in question that you are labeling heresy? It's funny that Jesus' disciples walked with him for over 3 years. If anyone would have known he was a fake then they would have. They would have had to keep up the charade, right? However, 10 or the 12 died horrible deaths because of his claims. Thousands if not millions more have died, are dying, & are still willing to die for it.
stephendverner 1 year ago

Sounds very intriguing.
ipeegreatness34 1 year ago
@ipeegreatness34 really great book and sermon series that is on his podcast. the truth about your translation is that it has done the very thing that he is talking about. im guess NLT, im not sure. dont know greek, but ive been told from people that know greek say that the wording there means hate. the translators put in their own interpretation instead of just translating. this is not the place to discuss pros and cons of different translations
futbol4jc 1 year ago
@ipeegreatness34 but us as comfortable americans and humans try to take the boldness and radicalness out of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. we know that Jesus doesnt mean that we should hate people in the same way that we should hate sin BUT there is a reason why Christ worded it the way he did. to show us that our love for him should be so extravagant that our love for others should look like hate in comparrison. there is a really good sermon series on his podcast.
futbol4jc 1 year ago
I really agree with a lot of what he's saying. I myself am very guilty of doing so. America is very guilty of doing so, for example, Jesus is my homeboy. Not that this is sinful to say, or anything like that, i'm not religious I see the love behind it, but when saying that we are really downplaying what Jesus did for us on the cross! Anyways, aside from that, the only thing I don't agree with is the way he said "hate your mother father etc etc." I actually just read that last night.
ipeegreatness34 1 year ago
About 9 months ago I started to really take Christ seriously in my life and put him first. Then I heard Dr. David Platt give a sermon on LUKE 14:26. Apparently I can’t be a disciple of Jesus unless I hate my mother, father, bother, sister, wife and children. I can’t do that, so, I guess that means I don’t have what it takes to be a real Christian.
Thank you Dr. David Platt for showing me what complete and total contradictory non-sense Christianity is.

@1manwolfpak01 Okay. ... i saw this too and my heart sunk. I love my family so much. When I heard David Platt say "he calls us to hate our mother, father, husband, etc. i was completely confused. but then i just listened to the video again and again and he says, our love is to be so strong with Jesus, that in comparison our closest relationships look like hate. so we don't have to love our family less, just Jesus SOOOOOO much more
layneylu 1 year ago
@layneylu I’ve looked into this some more. Not every Bible translation uses the word hate, some translate it as “Love Jesus more than” which makes total sense. There is not a good English equivalent for the Greek word used in the Gospel which is why interpretations vary. David implies that we can’t interpret Jesus's words differently, but we have to interpret to some degree, these words where written in a different language. I just don't like the way he's using this verse.
1manwolfpak01 1 year ago
@1manwolfpak01 a word in greek still has meaning. the translation that say "loves jesus more that" are actually doing what he is talking about. they are removing the sharp edge of the radical statements of christ. in an effort to explain a verse, they dont translate but interpret the text, thus putting and editor and the mind of the translator between us and the author who wrote the text. words are tranlated. to a different language. meaning is interpreted.
futbol4jc 1 year ago
@1manwolfpak01 Did you not watch the entire video?? He clearly states in 1:07 that this verse means that, compared to our relationship with Christ, our other relationships should LOOK like hate. He reads Greek, and understands the meaning behind the phrase. It means we must love Jesus more than our family, and compared to our love for Jesus, our love for our family is nothing. It shouldn't comepare with our love for Jesus. It's frightening that you're denying this biblical truth.
