Indie bands are more commonly composed of people who are in it just for the music. Mainstream musicians have a higher change of having to compromise their music because of what tehir label tell them to do. So mainstream musicians can be real musicians too and indie musicians can be only doing it looking for the money. It's just about the likelihood of their situations based on external forces acting upon their music.

@crissymonster Indie is independant from corporate funding (Aka a large corporation that offers record deals). If bands purposely stay away from mainstream, it's somewhat of a dumb move. It's no way to make a living, and bands like Death Cab For Cutie got popular by spread of word, instead of big marketing like most pop or rap bands. Remember: Can't spell 'crap' without 'rap'!
