@PonAdidas and America got their musical interests from Britain and other parts of Europe, way before America had even been colonised...if you go far enough back in time you can argue it with anything so it doesn't really achieve much.
Sorry Americans, but I can`t explain what I felt when I hear the who, so It's in portuguese:
Essa banda é a maior do mundo. Nao tem pra ninguem. Uma banda com 2 músicos extremamente fodas, Keith e John, com um guitarrista ao nível de um hendrix e letrista incrível, e um vocalista sem estrelismos que sabe que faz parte de uma banda e nao se acha "a" banda. Receita mais que perfeita.
@LouBass09 When Pete starts doing this power riff at 2:09 I get goose bumps all the time; I first heard in 1971 and that got me hooked, It made Me a Rocker.
John once said in an interview that the way he plays, comes from his feet. Like, he would feel the electric impulses and vibrations come up through his feet and go up through his body to his hand, and if you watch the way he stands, you can totally see it
@jaqua524 Sounds like "The Seeker". They were such an amazing jam band. If only we could have had The Who from 1970 play the Super Bowl a few years back. They would have rocked one jammed-out song for an hour and a half and set the 50-yard-line on fire when asked to finish.
Always loved the "Wow!" zooming in and out of the camera just after they kick back in after Keith gets his bass drum repaired. Excellent job from Pete keeping the crowd entertained while the technical difficulties were going on. The camera work sort of punctuates it.
@tatethompson1234 pete's playing is weird...sometimes he plays well and other times he's terrible. The last couple of years he's changed his electric style..he uses his index and thumb on his picking hand and has relied on the wammy alot...i don't like his style lately..and he's my biggest guitar influence. I'm speaking of his playing during late 60's early 70s..
I think it´s fucking wrong to say 1. this is not teh best bass line/solo/man/thing ever 2. best fucking druming 3. mind blowing voice 4. and with no doubt best guitar player there is, why? well he wrote pretty much everything in the who´s history and out side and in the who he gives it all for music. I think that is a rare thing now. Long live the who :)
Led Zeppelin is the reason rock n rock exists, and black sabbath. but John Bonham was def. the best drummer in the world, his drum solo's would go up to 30 minutes long in some songs, and john paul jones would play his organ while playing the bass with foot pedals, pretty skillful right? But The Who still kicks ass hahaha
@sedank page is the best....JPJ doesnt touch entwisle, keith was perfect for the who, the who were the bst live band, put on hell of a show, keith was the most ifluencial drummer ever, band preferance is opinionated, but zep doesnt touch the who live, influence..eh
@sedank The Who popularized (and almost created) rock operas, influenced punk rock, popularized the use of rock as a way to convey political/whatever issues, pioneered concerts amplification (thanks to John&Pete fighting to play louder than the other), created instruments destruction. Pete pioneered power chords, John played the first bass solos in rock, took the bass to places it had never been before, pioneered death metal singing.
Led Zep's more popular, sure, but more influencial? Not sure.
keith moon, best drummer, john entwistle, best bassist. pete townshend, best song writer. roger daltrey, one of the best rock and roll voices. now hold on a sec while i press play again.
2:57-4:42 is the greatest improvised guitar solo in the history of Rock. Pete seen that Keith wrecked his drum kit and so he proceeded to rock the crowd. They hung on silently to every note while Pete watched the drum Kit get fixed, then rocked out as if they never missed a beat and planned the whole thing. Fucking Amazing!
I love Moonie @3:14 doing some quick repairs on the drum that he just kicked the shit out of.....so kind of Keith also to "noodle" around while Keith's busy fixing!
Keith Moon is worth the price of admission! There has been no one before or after that could capture a mood so dramatically and still keep the beat. One of a kind!
I never understand why Keith Moon didn't use the hi-hat machine on live recordings...just amazing, because on studio tracks certainly he used. No doubt he was the craziest drummer of the 60's!!!
Attention Majkart: I remember in May 1970, I was graduating from high school and had some pocket money fron gifts, I was driving my old man's car and heard 'Summertime Bluuse" on the AM radio station, aftewr hearing it , I proceeded to the local record store and owned it that day
The problem with the sound on this video, it seems, is that the audio is too clean. They seem to have completely eliminated the audience sound. That sound should always be present in the background as it enhances the impact.
My jaw drops at every Who performance. This is true showmanship, they worked their asses off to get to where they were. I'm so disappointed that musicians these days hardly try and they get so successful. btw, it's saying something when a teenage girl is saying this...
Find the after scenes intervies in this or the 1977 Kilburn DVD - Pete's. He "was locked in The Who" and did not like touring with Moon. and Entwistle .. "they did nothing but play every shong as THEIR LEAD. I was constantly working to keep the rythym in the songs and curtail them"....
I was in a headshop in Hollywood in 1971 listening to the "Live at Leeds" version of "My generation" and those Power riffs between 2:10 and 2:50 made me buy that record,My First WHO LP
holy crap! i just realized, that vocal solo around 4:42, that vocal solo roger did right after they started up again sounded a lot like stuff that robert plant did! almost exactly! one of them ripped the other off i guess. i'm thinking plant was the one who ripped him off, i can't be sure

the who kill led zeppelin in studio and live.the whos songs had real meaning and took time to write. im not knocking zeppelin i respect them as a band but they sat in a studio and just played randomly till something fit then robert would come in with lyrics about his baby leaving or how he had sex. john beats jpj on bass not even worth and arguement there. pete may not have beaten page at studio guitar playing but page was very sloppy live,
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i definitely wouldn't say the who's song have any kind of deep meaning at all. i mean look at two of their greatest albums, Tommy and Quad, both just tell a story. thats all it really is. the who were a lot cleaner and easier to get into than zeppelin imo, zeppelin were always heavier. sure maybe the ox was better than JPJ, but JPJ also brought along amazing keyboards and mandolin, he was the whole package. i say zepp is the better band based on their stronger catalogue
Tommy is not just about a deaf dumb and blind kid, it seems obvious to me that there is something else behind it. And the same applies for Quadrophenia.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i think you're wrong, i think pete and the gang would like you to think theres some deep dylan-esque spiritual and moral meaning to Tommy or Quad but there really isn't, its just this grand story spread across an album
now i love the Who and i love Tommy and Quad and Who's Next but they aren't a very deep band with a whole lot of meaning, they were just about the music, but there's nothing wrong with that
tommy was a metaphor for being an incest/neglect victim (ie cant speak out) , that is why he is portrayed as "disabled" by abuse, and why his parents are portrayed wearing ballroom clothes/being seductive with the dr etc, instead of caring for him (narcissists) ..there is a hell of a lot of autobiographical meaning to it, particularly regarding townsends childhood. I thought that was common knowledge... as a story standing on its own, it doesnt make sense.
Tommy sublimates his disability into being the best at something(pinball champion) ,like Townsend was the best at his music...also the pinball halls in soho at that time were where perverts used to hit on kids ...the stuttering is fear (child abuse victims often stutter, cant communicate well)
In total agreement. Tonsend once remaked that he was surprised that anyone "rated him as a guitarist at all", but I cannot imagine Jimmy Page writing all the music in Tommy or Quadrophenia. Led Zeppelin disguised Blues covers, and didn't acknowlede thier sources.
I must dissagrey (not on the john entwistle part though) I feal like pages playing has more personality than pete although kieth moon wins it fore drums. the singers are on the same level
Hmmm... How's about just saying you like these guys better? As a player, I've got my opinions here, but really, it just comes down to what we dig. There's no measuring stick three-dimensional enough to compare these guys. Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly criticizing you, and this video has got me pumped for the rest of the day! Both bands are amazing, and anybody who ever tries to cop any one of the eight member's feel and sound knows that. Zeppelin love just compelled me to speak...
@13yguitarman Sorry to ruin your party but you're obviously not a bassist. JPJ and Entwhistle were both fabulous improvisers on the bass, and both were genius multi intrumentalists. So I believe there is an argument here.
@13yguitarman well thats just bullshit page studied days for a song he was just very good at it and done most of their best work in 2 a 3 days like achilles last stand dazed and confused etc.. the who are great and one of the best but they dont come close to led zeppelin in technique or influence led zep made heavy metal blues and rock what it is today but the who are more punk towards and they have alot of showtactics and publicity stunts that make rock and roll rocks!
@bushokjew00t Yeah, Page came in with the music for "Stairway to Heaven" and Plant thought up 75% of the lyrics on the spot. Now how many people could do that? These days, no one.
@13yguitarman Led did have bonham over moon, but then Jimi had Mitchell, who is extremley underrated, as it was very hard for drummers to jam with Jimi. Entinwistle is one of the best bass players of the 60s, like Jack Bruce and maybe James Jamerson. The guy who played on Miles' band was great too. I personally thought Hendrix and Cream could easily beat out Zeppelin on musicality, because alot of Zeppelin stuff was stolen from Blues Players from Chicago.
@willwelsh816 mitch mitchell is deffinetly the best drummer to ever live, im not joking.
im not just saying that because he is my favourite but i mean he was young, tallented, had good chops and he just knew how to rock a fucking drum kit, john bonham ehh i dunno to overrated, not such a fanboy as everyone else is of him
and i can honestly say from a drummers point of view i think john bonham is over rated for a drummer, he is deffinetly one of the best drummers, with a solo like moby dick but just... i mean look at kieth moon. you can just say how much better kieth is
@13yguitarman Absolutely. Page was real sloppy during Zep's later years, the heroin made sure of that. But I will say that Bonzo, hands down was a better drummer than Moonie. By inches, not miles.
The video for the bass solo is spliced entirely from other segments. He played this solo with a pick, and you can see all of those little bass fill parts in different sections of the Wight video...
Following the Townshend interlude, I dig the renewed energy - raw, intense, controlled - back at 4:46. It all fits. I'm sure the energy was electric there. The Who was my first love of all rock groups.
Around 4:25, anyone else hear Pete going into a Bad Company song??

the who kill led zeppelin in studio and live.the whos songs had real meaning and took time to write. im not knocking zeppelin i respect them as a band but they sat in a studio and just played randomly till something fit then robert would come in with lyrics about his baby leaving or how he had sex. john beats jpj on bass not even worth and arguement there. pete may not have beaten page at studio guitar playing but page was very sloppy live,

i definitely wouldn't say the who's song have any kind of deep meaning at all. i mean look at two of their greatest albums, Tommy and Quad, both just tell a story. thats all it really is. the who were a lot cleaner and easier to get into than zeppelin imo, zeppelin were always heavier. sure maybe the ox was better than JPJ, but JPJ also brought along amazing keyboards and mandolin, he was the whole package. i say zepp is the better band based on their stronger catalogue

Tommy is not just about a deaf dumb and blind kid, it seems obvious to me that there is something else behind it. And the same applies for Quadrophenia.

i think you're wrong, i think pete and the gang would like you to think theres some deep dylan-esque spiritual and moral meaning to Tommy or Quad but there really isn't, its just this grand story spread across an album
now i love the Who and i love Tommy and Quad and Who's Next but they aren't a very deep band with a whole lot of meaning, they were just about the music, but there's nothing wrong with that
ledzeppelin2044 2 years ago
tommy was a metaphor for being an incest/neglect victim (ie cant speak out) , that is why he is portrayed as "disabled" by abuse, and why his parents are portrayed wearing ballroom clothes/being seductive with the dr etc, instead of caring for him (narcissists) ..there is a hell of a lot of autobiographical meaning to it, particularly regarding townsends childhood. I thought that was common knowledge... as a story standing on its own, it doesnt make sense.

its about neglect and child abuse...not being able to communicate
MoonAharshMistress 2 years ago
Tommy sublimates his disability into being the best at something(pinball champion) ,like Townsend was the best at his music...also the pinball halls in soho at that time were where perverts used to hit on kids ...the stuttering is fear (child abuse victims often stutter, cant communicate well)

Entwistle also provided trumpet and piano AND BACKING VOCALS so there

@13yguitarman The who and Zep were to different type bands back then.
there is no possible way to even compare them.
I seen them Live in concert as a young kid and both were awesome.
Page is one of the best guitar players live to ever see, he is one hell of a showman, and musician.
as the saying goes- You had to be there.

@13yguitarman why do you compare two gods? What good comes out of that
8000cheese 1 year ago 2
@13yguitarman well thats just bullshit page studied days for a song he was just very good at it and done most of their best work in 2 a 3 days like achilles last stand dazed and confused etc.. the who are great and one of the best but they dont come close to led zeppelin in technique or influence led zep made heavy metal blues and rock what it is today but the who are more punk towards and they have alot of showtactics and publicity stunts that make rock and roll rocks!
bushokjew00t 1 year ago 4
@bushokjew00t Yeah, Page came in with the music for "Stairway to Heaven" and Plant thought up 75% of the lyrics on the spot. Now how many people could do that? These days, no one.

Why does everyone turn everything into some stupid competition?

@13yguitarman Led did have bonham over moon, but then Jimi had Mitchell, who is extremley underrated, as it was very hard for drummers to jam with Jimi. Entinwistle is one of the best bass players of the 60s, like Jack Bruce and maybe James Jamerson. The guy who played on Miles' band was great too. I personally thought Hendrix and Cream could easily beat out Zeppelin on musicality, because alot of Zeppelin stuff was stolen from Blues Players from Chicago.

@willwelsh816 bonham over moon? i could only read up to there....its preferance i guess, but i take keith over bonham
jaqua524 1 year ago
@jaqua524 well moon fit real good with the who, but if he played with anyone else, it might not've sounded so well.
willwelsh816 1 year ago
@willwelsh816 mitch mitchell is deffinetly the best drummer to ever live, im not joking.
im not just saying that because he is my favourite but i mean he was young, tallented, had good chops and he just knew how to rock a fucking drum kit, john bonham ehh i dunno to overrated, not such a fanboy as everyone else is of him
keaganrox23 1 year ago
@13yguitarman i absaloutely agree with you
and i can honestly say from a drummers point of view i think john bonham is over rated for a drummer, he is deffinetly one of the best drummers, with a solo like moby dick but just... i mean look at kieth moon. you can just say how much better kieth is
keaganrox23 1 year ago
@13yguitarman Absolutely. Page was real sloppy during Zep's later years, the heroin made sure of that. But I will say that Bonzo, hands down was a better drummer than Moonie. By inches, not miles.

what is it with crazy drummers? :)
