  • notice a very young lea michelle in that cast

  • I had the chance to watch it with the original cast and it is absolutely unforgettable.

  • It's just been announced that Brian Stokes Mitchell and Jeff Goldblum have been cast as Rachel's Dads on Glee. I had the irrepressible urge to come and watch this again.

  • this is way better then the lion king it should have won

  • AH LEA MICHELE! this is such a great show!

  • That is a massive cast!

  • Lea Michele is so Gorgeous!

  • They're doing this in London this year, Open Air. Just wanted to have a look. Like what I see....

  • Awesome show! But the "they would be the next Evelyn Nesbit" line...nah, you wouldn't want to be her. Her life sucked :/

  • I saw Ragtime, Sideshow, AND Lion King on Broadway that year and Lion King REALLY WAS THE BEST musical. The show was visually something that broadway had never seen before and the added musicianship to the songs in Lion King just made it an easy choice....

  • This won Best Score and Best Book but not Best Musical? So the Tony voters were saying: Ragtime is the best WRITTEN musical this year but not the BEST musical. How does that make sense???

  • @ThePhantom135 I understand why Lion King won, despite the fact that Ragtime did have the best score and and best book. Lion King had more components to it: sets, costume, puppetry, dance... this plus a reasonable (albeit at times copied score) made for a show that all could enjoy.

  • I just realized - the little girl is Lea Michele

  • It's incredible how this number takes something as simple as walking and forms it into something so powerful and spine tingling.

  • That president Taft looks pretty dang legit!

  • love.

  • If this won Best Book and Best Score, then why did it not win Best Musical? Sure, the "Lion King"'s appeal wasn't entirely in either of these areas, and what probably made them decide that "Lion King" was a better musical was Julie Taymor's directing. There is a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, so why give it Best Musical due to one factor that they can already commend? That really doesn't leave any good reasons why it didn't win over "The Lion King".

  • Ragtime was so completely robbed of the Tony for best musical that year. How it went to the Lion King is beyond me.

  • @PatrickRomSim Such a good show you are 100% right in that statement!!

  • @PatrickRomSim The Tony voters haven't always been smart. Besides, winning Tonys isn't everything (although it probably would have extended Ragtime's original run). People will look back years from now and wonder what the Tony voters were thinking. Gypsy, regarded as a masterpiece in musical theatre (considered by some, including Brantley, to be the best musical), didn't win, and the score wasn't nominated. Eventually, this show should become a classic, despite losing the Tony.

  • 0:00. You May Need This.

  • Marin Mazzie. Audra McDonald.

    Need any more be said?

  • Audra McDonald as good as she is was not a lead in this musical she won best featured actress .

  • God Bless whichever brave male soul decided to hit the High B at the end of the number haha.

  • @Springcloudstar it is haha, her first Broadway production

  • @JAyala7293 It was her second. She was in Les Mis when she was 8 as young Cosette, young Eponine, and u/s for young Gavroche. Just clearing up :)

  • I love it how some lone tenor hits that Bb at the end of this...sublime

  • I love how Coalhouse wears his hat in that slanted fashion. Makes him look 10x more impressive!

  • I love this song, it's my favourite from the whole show. Goosebumps !

  • @cheyenne5912 lol you're right! I had no idea she was on stage that early!

  • Did they seriously laugh when he said and there were no Negroes?????

  • @kusai5555 It was the group of Negros that made it sound like laughing. They are supposed to be having a good time in a club at their entrance.

@itsinthebag I would have applauded too- Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonnell!

  • Oh god theres Lea Michele from glee as the little girl! so cute!

I don't think this show should have ever left broadway. Brian Stoke Mitchell has such a beautiful voice!

  • lol it's lil lea xD

  • @1MissKarlieStarr I know!! I realized that too :D

  • Funny how people applaud at the line "And there were no negroes!"

  • @itsinthebag2010xyz

Naw, they were applauding when the "negroes" made an awesome entrance just as that line was said :)

  • ha ha one person dislike it

  • Great clip! Gotta get one of those Girly umbrellas. I'm way overdue for a live show...

  • @jvmc08 ragtime is early jazz. Jazz has roots in ragtime music.

  • @jvmc08

    *ahem*

  • This almost brought me to tears, it was so good.

  • What an extraordinary show this was in its original Broadway production. One of the great opening numbers in Broadway history.

  • you can really hear the power tenor blasting the high C at the end

  • I got to see this play with my choir class before I graduated. I love this play the Grandfather is funny.

  • I wish I could've seen it on broadway!

I read it for school, and the book was fantastic!

Too bad the revival was only on for a few months.

  • does anyone know where a video on youtube with just this acoustic version ?

or the name of the song with composer pls reply, searched this song for so long

  • I saw this show with orignal cast on Broadway and had not made the Lea Michele connection. She is unmistakable. No wonder she is so great if she got to work with Audra McDonald and Marin Mazzie.

  • Every time they sing '94 years to go...' I get chills that don't stop til the end of this video. Man, how I wish I had been born early enough to see this cast and remember it!

  • i got to pefrom this when i was 14...I WAS SO LUCKY :D

  • It's amazing that after 12 years of watching this I'm just recognizing Lea Michele. There are a few others I can't name but have seen their faces before.

  • is the girl lea michele?

  • @sarahsandiego2 yes :)

  • @sarahsandiego2 Yes, that's her.

  • The girl looks like Lea Michele. is it her?

  • is it weird that i watch this like everyday?! hahahaha

the bass drum beats at 0:59 with the transition make chills go down my spine.

  • My choir performed a RAGTIME medley and we all love it.

  • I would love to meet Marin Mazzie! She's my Acting Professor's sister-in-law.

  • @addiople She's super nice! I just met her last Monday at her first performance of Next to Normal!

  • that's lea michele as the immigrant's daughter (tatah? i believe)

  • @thebrunette1 It is !

  • @thebrunette1

Yep it most certainly is a young Lea!

  • My daughter and I were privileged to be in the audience at the Ford Theater in Sept of 1998 to watch this fabulous musical. It was our first taste of a live Broadway show, and we were both reduced to tears at the sheer brilliance of the whole production. Fabulous orchestra in the pit and uniformly great singers on that huge stage.....Brian Stokes Mitchell being particularly brilliant. The thrill of a lifetime!

  • okay, so i have to watch tony performances as part of my musical theatre studies and i ADORE ragtime then all i see is little lea michele’s face pop up. i think i’m going to cry.

  • @westendstarlet i just watched this clip in my musical theater class today! and i loved little Lea! she's so adorable here

  • Holy flying Christ-child! Who is that hero-tenor who goes to the high B in the final few bars? Brian Stokes Mitchell? Regardless, Bravo! I really miss this production; And what a shame that the revival didn't do so hot.

  • my stageworks class is doing ragtime next year god i love this musical!

  • @me254065 I laugh every time I hear that.

  • Thank you from my ever singing heart for sharing the magic! Cheers!

  • Aw, baby Lea Michele! She was so cute in this, I remember seeing it on Broadway. I was only about her age at the time and didn't fully appreciate it then...

  • What a thrilling song it makes me want to sing and be its so dramatic its thrilling.

  • That was smashing postivley dashing I mean Ladys with parasols and men with tennis balls J.P.Morgan the oner of White Star Line Henry Ford That made Ford Moter Company The victorian Era was Simply Grand

  • They were absolutely robbed of Best Musical.

  • Yes they were. What a great show it was.

  • we're doing this at my high school this year!!! its gonna be amazing! auditions are soon and i don't know what i want to try out for. whats a good role for a 14 year old female soprano? keep in mind, no main roles are in sight cuz they give all the leads to seniors.

  • Evelyn Nesbit is good for a soprano. The ensemble parts are fantastic, though, they get all the awesome choral stuff.

  • you could try for little girl.

but otherwise evelyn nesbit is good.

perfectlymarvelous is right though, i played mother in ragtime but i was so jealous of the people in henry ford and the night that goldman spoke at union square.

  • Time for Hollywood to film this musical version. The non musical version is almost 30 years old now. Time to do the MUSICAL on film.

  • Amen to that!

  • I completely agree. It just screams to be filmed.

  • i hate they had to butcher this song. even for time reasons...

  • my mother was in this. She played Sarah in our community theater. She was so good! i love this show!!
