@marksfromthelife Don't even tell me about it. I mean Sony makes good TVs and compact cameras but I don't know how dumb one has to be to buy a Sony DSLR. Sony produces full-frame sensors for Nikon, but look at their A900. The noise kills it at 800 ISO.. They have bought Minolta and wasted it.
@funtube99999 Pfft. You said it - they make the sensors for Nikon. To claim that people are dumb to buy Sony dslrs is an idiotic statement in itself. Having said that, I own a Nikon, but there's nothing in it.
the lunar and space use lens are modified. The use a dry lubricant system and due to static build-up due to no air (or water vapor to discharge static charges) there is a special conductive film put on the film pressure plate. There is also a special plate in between the film and lens called a Reseau plate. It had finely scribed lines that were used as precise reference points
They also silver plated some pieces to help with the heating/cooling probelm.
How is it possible for a lens or SLR camera body to work properly on moon's surface ? The temperature varies from 123 C to -233 C... it's freaking close to absolute zero.... the shutter curtain, the diaphragme blades would get stuck... the film would probably crack if the SLR mechanism is works...
@averagegab Maybe it works due to extremely low pressure (about 10^-9Pa - Earth's atmosphere is about 101300Pa) so the heated camera has virtually nothing to heat up so it doesn't lose its heat - it stays at the temperature it has from the landing module. It surely would cool down eventually but I'think it would be a quick process. Those are just my opinions I'd be glad to hear someone's opinion about this.
@averagegab belive me all the carl ziess lenses/nikon d3s's that went to moon have been modified to work flawless in that enviroment,i doubt a normal carl ziess lens would work on the moon
well, it would actually. it's just the hasselbald's case that have been reinforced with lead to shield the film and the small bits of electronics against cosmic radiations.
@HelloNewYorkCity - Created for effect. Besides, anything will CA somewhat if shot at extra wide apertures. Ever shot with the $10,000 Leica 50mm F.95? Lots of CA on the M9.
The design is certainly german, and the QC may be dictated by the home office, but the one thing that isn't clear to me is where the glass comes from. Are the Japanese lenses made from the same glass as the German lenses?
probably not... Leica for instance, uses very especific tipes of glass, which many times cost (only the raw glass) more than a finished japanese lens.
too bad the hasselblad v systhem gets skimmed down, I personally hope that there will com hopefully in the nearbye future a payable full size digital back for the v systhem to keep v systhem alive, and therefor also the Zeiss lenses, besides that I have the 80mm 2,8 cfe :)
just get a leaf aptus digital back (a newer version of it) and you'll be much happier then if you were to buy a hasselblad or imacon digital back. They in most cases cost more, but photographers dealing with advanced lighting or motion agree that it's the best choice (no lag like other digital backs)
I agree with the comments below regarding the Japanese camera manufactures.
Many of these High-End Euro optics companies wouldn't exist today if it weren't for Japanese Camera body manufactures.
I still do believe that Ziess is one of the worlds best optics manufacturer, but you can thank Japanese cameras and optics for 80% of the worlds photographic and video media you see today.
And hey, Nasa used Nikon F4S Cameras in space too...
I bet Ziess used Fuji Film to shoot this commercial ; )
Zeiss wouldn't have as much business, but when it comes to scientific products, Zeiss has a huge monopoly on it. Nikon and Canon are not as advanced in this area.
By the way, many of the great designs you see from other companies, were copied from Zeiss. 80% is a really high calculation considering that zeiss made about 60 or so versions of the zeiss ikon camera, and made lenses for Canon, minolta, yaschica, contax, nikon, hasselblad, rollei, hartblei, sony.. with the list going on and on.
Zeiss dates back over 100 years... It is one of extremely few companies in the world that basically only make 1 type of product, namely lenses and optical systems. It's all they've ever done, and they still do it extremely well. They have precision requirements that make other companies quibble.
Nearly all reputable optical products use Zeiss lenses. Nikon and Canon are really the only exception in the high-end lens market, because they make their own.
Only company?? what joke!Any japanese company can produce far better lenses than Zeiss,as saying about Zeiss product range remember Canon can produce large telescopes and their space mission was using canon lenses too, today nobody use Zeiss lenses. Check out Wikipedia,Zeiss only has millions of revenue, the company is over-hyped.Compared to japanese companies Zeiss is like a little kid, without Sony Zeiss with be bankrupt.
Sorry to have been abit unjust.I have to admit that Zeiss is still one of the best lens makers in the world.Zeiss lenses are excellent but it does not mean they are better than others. The lens choice relies on personal taste, every kinds of lens give different charateristic pics, there is no significant sharpness and quality difference between brands.Professionals only decide their own subtle preferences to specific effects by different lenses.Keep Up Zeiss!!!!!!!
There roots are purely optical... they didn't plan on making any cameras themselves, however, they finally built a camera using their own designs called the Zeiss Ikon ZM, which is made in japan by cosina, but none the less, it's still very very german.
Adidas and Nike are from german and the USA, but chances are they are also made in asia, so I don't see the cameras and lenses made in japan as a downside, when the design is still german.
A camera is not supposed to be a good looking Barbie. What kind of fantasy planet are you coming from ???? My college already uses his second Canon gear in three years because his first already was fucked up. Just by using it to the extreme as it should being used. My Hasselblad with its Zeissies still performs as date of purchase 10 years ago.
The only reason Zeiss went Jap is because of lower production costs. I sure hope their quality stays German in future. I hate Jap crap.
So what? What kind of planet do you come from, no... let me answer that one, probably Earth and location: US, what's the American dream again? Oh Burgers and Donuts.
Did I ask what you use? Did I ask what you think of Japanese? Did I ask anything about your college? No, then STFU I just fucking comment that Carl Zeiss is ugly like your fat damn American ass, go and eat your mother fucking damn donuts!
Are you serious? Sony production is high quality and the most expensive in the world.Even ALL Hasselblad is MADE IN JAPAN BY FUJI you retarded,Hasselblad Sweden can not even produce their envisioned camera, because they dont have the technology. Fuji provides Hasselblads core technology so all you european cameras are mostly copies of Japanese products.
Iam talking analog you dummy. And I know Fuji does the H1-H? series. Actually the X-Pan also had Fuji Roots. The question is who needs who ? Nowedays Hasselblad needs Fuji to make their products payable. Fuji needs Hasselblad to upgrade their status. Actually its Hasselblad who introduced the standard high-tech-quality approach in the Fuji organisation. After all Hasselblad wants to stay top of the market.
Fuji realized the camera Hasselblad wants, just like in a tailorshop you dnt need to know how to make a suite.Fuji is a far bigger company than Hasselblad for decades how come Hasselblad tought Fuji? Fuji makes robots, computers, cameras and even rockets, highspeed trains..which are being sold all over the world. And Hasselblad NEVER intend to sell their cameras PAYABLE!!as it is the as expensive as a BMW ok? I am sure Fuji got money alot from Hasselblad too.
Zeiss need to suck Sonys cock in the ass to survive so you should thank japaneses for that.Zeiss and Hasselblad all need japanese technology to produce their wanted products, not because japanese production is cheap you fucktard.Remember Sony uses Zeiss for purely emotional reasons not that Zeiss quality is any better or cheaper japanese production. And High end lens market is also dominated by the japs.
Zeiss has huge quantities of developed lens designs and optics for scientific study and photography. How many of the telescopes and satellites around the world say the name Nikon or Canon on them? It would be hard to find many that don't have Zeiss glass.
the computer you're on probably had it's memory cards assembled with the use of zeiss glass. Zeiss is everywhere, but people don't realize it.
Zeiss has all the business it needs. the japanese aren't keeping it alive.
the Zeiss lenses on camcorders or Handys are not really Zeiss, it has nothing to do with the real handmade Zeiss lenses or telescopes they built. It is mainstream junk
i guess it isnt about where the product is made, it is about who invented the design and the production machines and the most important factor for me, how it is produced, and Zeiss production chiefs will tell the japanese very strict how they have to make the products. cheaper producing companys will probably have lesser demands to their workers and end results. So i guess it isnt that important if a german or Japanese worker built it.
@bolderiks Aesthetics are very important. Note how beautiful Panavision or Arri cameras are. Excellent equipment requires excellent aesthetics. You need to love using them. As an example outside of photography, have a look at a modern Formula 1 engine, especially a Mercedes-Benz. You *will* want one in your car after you see it.
@PikemannUrge, as long as it is 'form follows function' i'm in. And for my car an eco engine is all i need. How this engine looks like? Well this really is a non-issue for me. Thats a matter of interest for the ones who think they feel happy when they lick the bubble of the marketeer.
@l33thustla Are you referring to lenses or camera bodies? Zeiss lenses are beautiful. Canon lenses are just good. Probably the nicest looking lenses are the ZF primes for SLRs. The nicest looking still camera? Probably the Leica MP. Canon still does not place high priority on aesthetics.
in rangefinder photography, they are slightly better (M lenses vs ZM lenses), but when it comes to scientific uses, cinema, meterology, optical eyeglasses and anything else, they reign superior to everyone hands down.
@tinom85 You may be referring to Carl Zeiss Jena, a company that split from CZ proper after the war. These never were the same company. It should be easy to look up the history of the two companies.
What, that's not true. Where did you get this? Some lenses are licensed to be produced in other countries, but the majority of lenses are still made in Germany.
NO. I worked for Zeiss for 6 years and have been to the factories in both East and West Germany. Plenty of manufacturing going on in both places.
