I have a 95 town car. the engine runs good but oil fills up in the valve covers and runs out. some time looks like no oil in the crank case at all. what causes this? Are there drain holes that can clog up somewhere?
@supressorgrid There are several drain holes in the cylinder head. If you've got oil getting stuck in the top of the engine and not making it back to the crankcase then you need to fix that asap.
sounds like the timing chain guides have worn through the plastic coating to the metal backing.. take the front cover off and have a look... happened to my 96.
If you can prove healthy compression (@ 180 + ), correct timing, and strong ignition, you should not be seeing sludge. Premium lubricants don't necessarily stop sludging. Sludging is the result of unacceptable blowby, and the oil vapors condense and bake onto the valve cover underside. Just like in a non self-cleaning oven. My vote goes to either a worn or sabotaged engine. Engines would go 300 000 mi. 'before' Royal Purple existed. Not that Royal Purple is not superior; it is not a real cure.
@seapeddler I agree that that is the filthiest 4.6 I have ever seen. The ones at the dealership i see taken apart that are ruined are cleaner than that inside, the 4.6 in general is not prone to sludging even with abuse.
look at all the sludge ?? man thats bad, clean it up and get some royal purple oil and k&n oil filter then change it EVERY 3000 miles,,thats what i do and you can eat out of my valve covers,,lol,,the only sound you hear in my engine is my fuel injectors and thats only do to my 93oct sct performance tune that cranks up my presure and cycle on my injectors,,if you take care of your car and stop yourself from buying cheap oil , oil filter , air fliter and gas it will last 4ever and a day,,lol ,
timing chain tensioner guides... Ford knows they are crap and should have recalled. The smoke is the oil spray. Two ways to fix - 1) run car into bridge support and collect insurance 2) 10 hr teardown and replace. Option one is the easy way out!
I'm hearing the early stages of a "ticking" sound in my 4.6 liter Ford V8. I'm wondering, with the valve covers off it is possible to tell if there is "slack" in the timing chain or valves? Do these OHC engines have rocker arms? Can you tell with the valve covers off if a valve lifter is bad? I used to rebuild engines for a hobby back in the 60s. Engines are a lot different these days.
I replaced the valve cover gaskets in my 92 Vic, what a pain! Good to see you have the easy side of the engine off, that bottom rear bolt on the passenger side here is a pain due to limited room near the firewall and a wiring harness. The driver's side: unhook both wiring harnesses, disconnect the fuel lines, throttle and cruise control cables, position plug wires aside, took awhile.. If you have an oil pressure light on, pick up another cheap crown vic, they're good cars.
well, if it had low enough oil pressure to damage anything IE: make this noise, the oil pressure light would be on. thats why its there. if its off, you're fine with oil pressure. probably a rod bearing like everyone is saying.
its not going to hurt it running with the valve cover off. just makes a mess. its not like a subaru were all the oil is going to just pour out of the thing. sounds like a bad berring.

An intern poured piss into the engine. The acid corroded the bearings.

I don't see oil spraying, that camera would be covered..

Must be that black shit stuck all over has clogged some things. An oil change 50,000km ago would have fixed that.
