in my opinion a band sells out when all 3 of these following tasks are done 1. They leave their origional sound and reject it(not play old songs at concerts) 2. the new sound is more socially accepted, and has a larger potential fan base 3.the majority of the old fans wouldnt attend the said bands concert.
