Grumman Goose... When flying this bird in Flight Simulator I always wondered if those high wing floaters could, under certain circumstances, pose a problem in real life, or was it just me? Or was it Microsoft?... Now I know the answer... FSX is not that bad after all, this happens also in the computer, when things go wrong :-P :-D Hope no-one got injured
@shaundiedrinksdew Sure... But the fact that , when fully extended, they're still higher than the central floater (the fuselage) makes the plane tilt either to the left or right when stopped (or at slow speeds), this "height gap" under certain circumstances might produce a violent oscillation (like the one we see in the movie), that's what I meant.
@vachief He was just trying to demonstrate the versatility of a land/sea plane.
He was still at full power???
Amazingly, that plane may have flown again that day. Prop strike to the sand may not have damaged the engine or bent tht prop. It didn't look like it bent the wing. Those Grumens are tough.
However, you do normally have to rebuild the engine after any prop strike.
If the wing strut was bent, major, major repair.
The pilot, however, is probably flying Piper Cubs again.
@mark0454 ..To much airplane for the pilot, looks like he paniced and cut power to late. At the end of the clip you can see the port wing is bent up at a 20 degree angle from the flaps outboard. #1 engine looks like toast, probably bent the crank as that prop dug in deep. Main spar at the wing root, more than likely tourqed up a few fasteners. Looks to me like you would have to pull the wings off an crane it onto a flat deck. I'll bet they were drinking early that night. lol
@vachief Hey, can you come down and do the annual on my Arrow so I can take it out of the hangar? I will buy you two hot dogs for a dollar at the convenient food store.
@mark0454 ..No way...for that I would require 2 regular Tacos, a medium fry and a large chocolate shake from Jack-in-the Box or half ownership of the said airplane. Why don't you read the book and do it yourself? Nobody says you have to take your wife with you on the check ride. lol
@vachief I do a great deal of the annual myself. I take off all the inspection plates, take out the spark plugs, take off the couling, change the oil, send off the oil sample.pressure wash the engine, put the spark plugs, change the tires, belts, etc.
All my mechanic does is inspect, scope and chech the cylinder pressure, torque the spark plugs record and signs the books.
I put it all back together and we take a test drive, and I trade him out for something. Problem is getting him to it.
@mark0454 ...Yeah....a lot of guys do it that way. I'm not a small plane guy anyway, but my understanding is that if actually own the plane yourself, you can sign the book off. Doing a compression check is relatively simple and a good tester can be had for $100. same thing with the torque wrench. Being a small plane mechanic sounds like a tough way to make a living, if you need the guy to come out, you want to sweeten the pot a bit. Gold coins or cash work well. lol
307, its sad you go around calling people rich idiots and retards. The pilot that was flying this is a war veteran, retired airline pilot. He lost the right engine on Takeoff. The truth is this video was shot by a camera crew for the movie Endless summer 2 as someone else mentioned. The footage of the normal takeoff would have been in the movie. The aircraft was also used to transport film crew and execs from the west side of Costa Rica to the reserve on the East side because roads are so bad.
I appologize for my comments, I'm not saying all rich guys that own these planes are idiots, but a lot of them are and they think that the high performance WWII fighter they just bought is like flying the Cessna 172 they learned to fly in. WRONG!!!! WAY DIFFERENT, then they crash the plane and then it's another piece of history gone that our kids wont get to see fly.
Yeah, you should do your research. The pilot of this plane recovered from an engine fail during takeoff, quite well, I might add. He and all aboard could have easily ended up dead, but probably only ended up with bumps and bruises.
You rich idiots need to stick to the home builts and piper cubs and leave the war birds and rare aircraft alone. You run out and buy a P-51 and climb in the cockpit and think you're Bud Anderson but you have no idea how to fly those aircraft and you end up crashing the fucker.
I'm really glad we have rich RETARDS that are really good at destroying pieces of aviation history. That's a Grumman Goose, kind of a rare airplane. Thank God it's made by the IRON WORKS. "Grumman" for all you dummys.
The plane handled it so well beacause it was built by Grumman which was nick named The Iron Works by pilots over the years because the have a rep for building the strongest airplanes in the world. They built the F-14 Tomcat and many many other fighters and support aircraft.
Yea the U.S. used the Goose in WWII for to transport sailors to and from ships, also supply and cargo to remote islands in the Pacific, and other Maritime roles.
Because it wasn't a takeoff or a landing. It was for a shooting. The pilot was told to pull up to the shore as fast as possible. If it was a landing or a takeoff, he'd have never gone towards the shore.
Apparently this happend in Costa Rica about ten years ago when a team of American surfers were filming a movie/documentary about surfing in Costa Rica. The movie is called Endless Summer II and there are some clips of this movie here on YouTube. It seems that the pilot was an American guy living in Costa Rica at the time, who had a Grumman Goose. According to the movie this beach is called Ollie's Point, though I sincerely doubt of it, because OP is located within a restricted flying area.
Major truth, was said how many times in the movie between friends? Today truth is a lonely word and you hope you live to tell of your daring youthful days. It pays off in the long run to be good.

what the hell happened? does anyone know, seems some kind of control cable failure, or if an engine failure happened during the takeoff run the yaw could have done this?
this clip was taken during a movie shoot. The pilot started his takeoff run a little further up the river from where he had done so several times previously. At lift-off he noticed a power cable in his path and put the airplane back down again. The airplane was repaired and is back flying again.
