i have to laugh at the star trek actors pretending to love the people who still pay their wages, im sure at some stage behind backs the worse has been said lol stumbling in to the star trk thing has learnt me something, some sexy costumes the girls wear, i dont think i will ever get the star trek thing and there is no way i will insult anybody as the majority of trek folk seem to be nice people and that to me is a decent thing.

_____Hello! I'm a science fiction writer, and I HATE STAR TREK! Yeah, and that's said with a smile. You know why? Star Trek is FANTASY. All the "aliens" act and talk like human beings with degrees in classical lit from Oxford. REAL aliens would be so ALIEN that they'd either not give a far tabout humans, wipe us all out due to misunderstanding or chop us up just for the sake of science. All of that mind-reading nonsense doesn't fly with me either. Go read some Asimov or Hamilton!

And who's to say that Alien races wouldn't be humanoid, and wouldn't have developed similarly to us? The Star Trek universe revolves around the concept that all the species they encounter are derived from one "founder species," the "Preservers."

Thats why a goodly number of races are genetically compatable.

This is already a lively theory of origin on our own planet today.

As for language, supposedly they have Universal Translators.

But I don't buy that. :)

_____Ever study anthropology? At least, look into writings by a dude named Clifford Geertz. He once investigated a tribe of head-hunters... That's right, CANNIBALS. According to him and a lot of other people who study cultures, there are different tribes of humanity that have COMPLETELY DIFFERENT concepts of reality and other cultural differences. If we humans can all live on the same freakin' planet and yet have worlds of our own, then aliens would be too far OUT there.

@Egglesplork Well, I don't think hate something just because it's fantasy is the right approach. StarGate for example is the same concept. StarWars too, battlestar galactica... These shows are not about realism, but about ideas, paradoxes, moral issues and many other things!

Oh, and if you want some REAL sci-fi, read Greg Egan. That guy is insane and probably came from future :)

_____About that whole sci-fi onto fantasy thing, I attended a great big writer's convention back in April down here in Florida. Yeah, a black-clad bloc of publishing big-wigs came over from New York just to tell all us peons how to write. Guess what? They said there WAS no more science fiction. Oh, gosh no. It's all SF.
